In the past three weeks, four coaches have been kicked out of games in the Ontario Hockey League. Two coaches got two-game suspensions, one got three games, one of their teams got a $2500 fine, and one coach got just a $500 fine and no suspension at all. Even if we set aside the inconsistency -- who said what to warrant the different penalties/consequences -- this is a concerning trend. The game is played and officiated by humans, who are emotional creatures. Humans also aren't perfect. So, officials will make mistakes. And when the outcome of games matters so much, the imperfect, emotional creatures behind the benches might get angry. They might even -- gasp! -- use foul language. Look, we all know there are distinct lines we cannot cross. But if you screw up your job and it hurts my ability to do my job, I might get mad at you. I might even yell and swear at you. And that HAS TO BE okay. All within reason, but it has to be okay. If you're in a public-facing role, from sports to broadcasting, and you're not okay with it, maybe it's time to look for a new role.
