This talk will lay out five important ideas about
friendship, as seen by Dr. Adam Dorsay. These ideas come from research, his clinical observation
as a psychologist, and personal experiences. Dr. Adam Dorsay is a licensed psychologist and a certified executive coach working in private practice in San Jose, CA. He specializes in assisting high-achieving adults (including professionals, executives, entrepreneurs, and professional athletes) with relationship issues, stress reduction, anxiety, and attaining more happiness in their lives. In 2016 he gave a well-watched TEDx talk about men and emotions. He is also a resiliency expert who has created programs for companies including Facebook and DigitalOcean. He is the host of a psychology podcast called SuperPsyched. He is happily married with two young boys and a hypoallergenic 33-pound Australian Labradoodle therapy dog, who lives at his home and works at his office. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you so much. People don’t invest enough time in friendships. And when they do they want them to be perfect. Friendships need grace!

Wow I’m 3 minutes in and I can’t believe how much I can relate to this Ted talk. I’m 39 with virtually no friends and a strong pull toward psychology. I wish I had someone help me figure out how to work in mental health at 39. It’s like all this potential is wasted.

In the US, people are taught NOT to stick by people going through hard times because people who are down bring us down too. We stay away from people who just want to talk about the hard times they are going through. We stay away from people with health issues because they can’t take long hikes or hit the bars. We eliminate a large pool of people as potential friends because friendship is too hard.

This makes a lot of sense, I recently have struggled to understand why my crush is not ready for a relationship but it can be multiple things. So if I have to get to know him more then I'll respect that. :)
