People ask me to "rate" their mixes on a near-daily basis.
The problem with this mindset is that there's an overemphasis on mixing when mixing is only a single component of what makes a production sound pro.
In this video, I review 4 subscriber mixes and reveal where their real issues lie and how they can greatly improve their "mixes" by focusing on what's ACTUALLY important.
If you'd like to enter your mix for a potential mix critique by me, download your Free Polished Production Checklist (link above) and shoot your mix as a reply to that email.
Include any notes or improvements that you'd like to hear in your mix. Original music only. NO COVERS.

Great video man. Check lists are good, I use them all the time. When working up a batch of recordings I scribble and highlight things which need work as I go. I have a terrible attention span and have many songs on the boil at the same time. One of my problems I now realise is setting the drum velocities too straight. I love drums, and have had the experience of playing with some great players, and even started playing them like 40 plus years ago but don't have the feet/hand co-ordination to be really good. I'm still learning to program them like a human and getting better. Thanks for the post.

I know it's easier said than done but have a band, have a drummer, record them. 1 guitarist solo projects tend to have this overly singular focus and vibe. If you have drummer and you play off of each other's parts it just results (imo) in more interesting stuff in general. Same with bass. Plus hanging with the boys and jamming is half the fun

These dudes have great songwriting and they are getting better. I really dig Sean's post-hardcore revival vibe like SeeYouSpaceCowboy & Static Dress. Do you mind linking to his band for us to follow.

Can you do a video on setting levels (after recording)? As in, how to determine how loud the guitars should be in relation to the bass, the drums, vocals, etc on the console?

I really like you and your channel. But I have to say. I have completely disagreed with everything you have said here about all of these other bands. There ain't nothing wrong with their recordings. They did those all superbly well. They did them all as everybody is instructed to do, today. And I honestly don't know. What kind of bullshit you are spewing forth here in this video? Your mix critiques in this particular instance. They are way off the mark. Everyone here. Has utilized everything. They have been taught. At the university level. And I can plainly hear that. I don't know what you are hearing? When you were talking about clipping. There was no clipping. No clipping that wasn't, intentional. I've been known to use,, intentional, creative, clipping. For numerous reasons. Including, gaining those, dissonant, 3rd order harmonics. Which do not occur naturally in life. I will use. To gain an extra edge. Perhaps on an instrument. I didn't record. Or recorded off of someone else's, truly lackluster, audio mixers such as a Mackie. Very consistent sounding. Very bland and boring sounding. I'm going to have to do something with that, in remixing. And you can't always get what you want without some creative clipping. Of some sort or another. Whether it's a front end. An output. An intermediate stage. It does not matter. Everything you have picked apart here, is not valid. You went about your critique, the wrong way. I am truly surprised. I thought you were better than this. I don't know what to make of your, off-base critique? There is a consistent element of, sameness. Everybody is seeking to emulate. All of these examples did that quite well. I don't know what you are hearing? Especially when you said clipping. Nope! Something not quite right with your, personal, gain staging. I'm a master at Gain Staging. As, Gain Staging, is everything! And I teach young engineers. How to cheat on Gain Staging. To get a better, higher headroom mix. By skewing the Gain Staging. While picking up, an extra 10 or so DB of noise. And simply dealing with that at mix. But could also be done in, computer post. If I take it to a computer for post mixing functions.. Which I do not always do. And I'll deal with any extra noise at mix time. And you will not hear it at all. And I can squeeze in additional, 10 DB of headroom. Out of most average, startup, entry-level, run-of-the-mill, foreign-made, imitation audio consoles. Called a Portable Mixer. In case you hadn't noticed Sonny boy. There really isn't any actual Dynamics. That really appears in any pop music. We've got limiters on everything. We've got downward expanders and gates. On everything. We got 1/2 a dozen, digital stereo fax processors. And we haven't made it in the computer yet. That's just icing on this cake. The perceived dynamics are what we create. Through hands-on mixing or automated mixing. And there is only going to be One Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Only one. And you are not breaking new ground. Though you might get buried in it. If you are recording and mix sound like amateur hour. But none of these do. And it sounds mechanical? You mean he's consistent on the drums? Those sounded like they were done on an SSL. Not a Neve or API for Christ sakes. You know see Bob Clearmountain mixing on Neve or API. In fact Bob hates API. He told me so. When I worked with him in New York City. As we both worked for the same studio, Media Sound Inc. It was a great place. The former West 57th St. Baptist Church. Turned recording studio. Now defunct. I worked there. In 1979. With Bob Clearmountain. I was a Maintenance Engineer some time, overdub Assistant Engineer. And so I figure, something else must've been eating at you today? To pick these apart and assume things you should not be. Those were all first-rate sounding. They were very listenable. They were well performed. It was expertly engineered. They were right up there. And oh hey. You can always deliver a winning video. Sometimes, these things happen. RemyRAD

It seems more like this was eating at you today sir. If you noticed on the mix that he said was clipping, when he paused it it makes this zap noise and you can see that the audio file is literally clipping. Yes the mixes sound great, he had said that. It just appears you dont have a trained ear and thats okay, but know that a lot of us are reading this and chuckling
