I’m 78, when I was in college at Cleveland State University and McDonalds opened a store at 105th and Euclid Avenue, we used to go there when they were closing, and order a hamburger, fries and a soda. The people behind the counter would fill our bags with all the food they were going to have to throw away. We sometimes got 8 or more bags of fries. Sometimes they would have a lot of hamburgers or cheeseburgers and they were in the bag too. All that for less than $.50!

No. - Gold is money and is a store of value long term. - Currency like the dollar is not store value long term. - Your income, priced in either, is just a trade. At the time of the trade it is worth more. - The problem is NOT any particular trade, but what happens after the trade, over time. - The problem IS that without sound money, the value after a trade is diminished over time.

I then returned to visit the biggest McDonalds (Florida) in 2000 telling my children to expect a treat in comparison to the McDonalds in the UK. This was a shock, the resteraunt was poorly run with two workers having a heated argument and delaying service to everybody's discontent.

You make a good point that gold is actually paying a relative dividend due to the supply of M2. I would be interested in some comments on gold leasing. Monetary Metals is a leasing gold, but it's hard to get past the idea of security. I believe you said "If you can't hold it you don't own it". I have the same insecurities about Gold Silver's "Instavault". Perhaps you could discuss the pros and cons of both leasing and vaulting.

I recently went into a burger king in nottingham saw the prices and walked right back out. For what they were going to charge me for a burger (£8 for a double whopper if my memory serves me) - no fries or drink I could walk 200 yards to the local kebab/pizza shop and get a 12inch pizza for £8.50!!! No-brainer - I could even get a sit down thai meal for around £15 where the quality is even better! I think these franchises will fast be out of business as people now can't afford to "treat" themselves to these "luxuries". Even though my company pays my expenses Im still very cost and quality conscious.

Alan, maybe you could do a study between prices in gold miners and the price of gold. What I mean is, BEFORE the dollar was being printed into oblivion, that was when the gold miners seemed to go up in value first before gold. Because their costs of mining it were not going up exponentially like today. Now, it seems like there's a point where the miners will not be able to extract gold at a profit compared to the dollar, so they will have less incentive to mine it eventually. So that might make gold more scarce and it will actually OUTPERFORM the miners instead of the other way around. Get my point? I thought of this, bc clearly the miners are underperforming the actual gold price. And I suspect this is bc their costs of mining are going through the roof.

IDK Mike, I'm not sure you can say that they aren't trying to price gouge us. I say that bc, right down the street there is a Circle K store and they sell pretty much the same Sausage Muffins as McD's Sausage McMuffin. I can get TWO for 5 bucks there, which is $2.50 each. They don't have hashbrowns, but they do have better coffee. So that means McD's is charging me $6 for a hashbrown and coffee. And both of those combined probably cost them 50 cents. So at the current prices, there margins are really high, but I now refuse to pay it. In addition, McD's sandwich shrunk smaller than the one at Circle K! It's not that I can't afford to pay McD's prices, I just refuse to get gouged. Another point: if Circle K is making a profit at $2.50 then that means McD's cost of a breakfast combo is probably around $2 for the sandwich, hashbrown and coffee and they're charging me $8.50!

It probably depends on where you're located. They did give the caveat at the beginning that this may be just a specific McD's or in a certain region with higher costs. There was something in the news recently about McD's prices skyrocketing in California due to the extreme increase in labor cost when the state minimum wage rose.
