From the Vault: Ljungman AG-42B (Automatgevär m/42)

Join Roy Hill as he offers a quick look at the Ljungman AG-42 (Automatgevär m/42). This Swedish semi-automatic, direct impingement rifle was designed around 1941, chambered in 6.5x55mm and some 30,000 were manufactured for the Swedish Army. In the early 1950’s the Ljungman was modified and subsequently designated as the Ag m/42B. If you have a firearm you’d like to see featured in the From the Vault series, please let us know.

I think I enjoy shooting my Ljungman even more than I do my Garand!! (Although it's a close race) An interesting note to the rear sight is that the elevation knob can be removed, and the "ballistic computer" revealed beneath can be rotated 180 degrees to select either spitzer (pointed) or round nose projectiles. WAY ahead of its time! Great review, great rifle! Thanks!

These rifles saw some action, perhaps most notably in the Congo Crisis in the early 60s.

I never heard of one long ago, but I had an M38. Called GS on unrelated matter, guy remarks...got a few AG42s...I think you want one. He was correct. Learned the manual of arms without finger damage. Yes a great shooter.

I have all 3. The Hakim rifle is the most common as they made around 70,000 compared to the 30,000 or so AG42s. The Rasheed is a Hakim, but setup like a SKS, and are by far the rarest as some estimates say only 8000 were made. The AG42 us also the first mass produced Direct Impingement rifle adopted by any military. The French were working on the MAS-40, which was also DI, but only a few prototypes were made when Germany overran France.

Just a quick note on the 6,5x55 cartridge. It wasn't the m96 Mauser that used the cartridge first, but the Norwegian Krag Jørgensen (M1894 rifle) and Swedish M/94 carbine.

Awesome video! Im one of the lucky people who is privileged to own one of those 30,000 rifles! I walked into a gunstore one day and i purchased it immediately. Its the smoothest rifle ive ever fired.

Well, to be fair, you wouldn't load the Ljungman with the magazine out of the gun. Every time someone demonstrates the "Ljungman Thumb" it is without the magazine in place. If you're going to load it, it's with the magazine in place which an empty magazine will push up a bolt stop keeping the gun safe to load. Anyone thinking they will need to switch the safety on and off just to load it will be mistaken. People should be aware of how the bolt can come down like that, but shouldn't be shown it to make them afraid of it.

The demonstration with the magazine out is to show the spring action only. Less painful than leaving tbe magazine in and tripping the bolt.

@@strayblackcatsmeow The bolt can't close on an empty magazine. That's why he takes out the mag to demonstrate it. The danger is when you're inserting the second clip. Then it might slam down on your thumb, if not careful. But put it on 'safe' and your thumb is safe as well.

20 years to track one down? Damn, I'm sorry for you in America, my Ljungman was my first gun! I have a 1943 one, middle production! Cheaper and far better for recoil and precision than an M1 Garand!

There was a gun store in Vancouver, BC that had crates of these in the early 90s, they were like new.....$200 each. The only problem was ammo, it was rare and very $$. It’s interesting, in Canada we have access to all kinds of cool surplus rifles (like new Russian SKSs for $250, SVT 40s for about $300) that are prohibited (I’m told) in the US

I bought mine at Lever Arms in Vancouver , BC early eighties for $ 65.00. Same time they were selling Husqvarna M 1907 cal. 6.5 long, for $ 60.00 Good old days.

Shame I didn't pick up a Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 or a Swiss K31 in 7.5x55 a few years back rather than the Finnish M39 in 7.62x54R.

Well at least you got the best Mosin Nagant ever made. Mosin Nagant is a bit of a beast, but I say the Finns tamed it well enough. That is what the Finns do. They take Russian gear and make it better.

As pleasing to the eye as that receiver cover is, it must have been a pain to actuate when covered in wet mud.

Fin descpription of this great rifle. Corrwction: the Swedeish name was "Armégevär 42" (AG) meaning army rifle 42.

The correct name is Armégevär m/42. Meaning army rifle. Since it´s not automatic the A is misread.

Ag42 kan förvisso inte skjuta automateld, icke desto mindre är Ag42 ett automatgevär, eftersom det är den automatiska omladdningen som åsyftas med "automat". Med dagens termer skulle man säga halvautomatiskt, men den korrekta militära beteckningen på detta vapen är "Automatgevär m/42".

Holy cow.....WE FOUND this gun.....Magnet fishing and its the B....Im blown away. I really want to see if i can find a shooting one now! only 30k?? I guess i am very lucky. If anyone wants to see....go to my channel, we were making magnet fishing videos and drug this up from the bridge!!! AWESOME
