The frozen lake ice is thick up here in the north, but we still haven’t got any snow. This gives us some really good ice for Nordic skating. Matti went out ice skating with our 2 border collies on the frozen lakes outside our house. It’s always a good idea to stop and make a fire and boil coffee. This time he also brought some coffee cheese which for most people is very strange.
In this video, he talks about how to travel safely on ice, ice safety, and what equipment to use when ice skating.
As soon as we get snow the ice-skating season will be over so, we just have to take the chance to use the time we get with good skating ice. When the snow comes, we will also get busy with trail preparation so the dog sledding tours.

I just finished reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and in the book, there is a chapter in the book where Kimmerer remembers spending her summers as a child canoe camping in the Adirondacks with her parents and siblings. Every morning her father makes coffee, and when it’s ready, he solemnly pours some of it out onto the ground, saying, “Here’s to the gods of Tahawus.” Only after this offering does he pour coffee for himself and his wife. As a child, Robin doesn’t question this small ritual and feels like it is an important way to begin the day, as if announcing their presence and giving thanks to the land. Tahawus, she explains, is the Algonquin name for the highest peak in the Adirondacks. Not quite a little people, but interesting tradition parallel!

Wow… Thats super interesting. I think that people back in the old days were more humble to the life. They didn’t take things for granted as we do today. It strange, because today we should know better. But today we are spoiled. We just believe that we have food on the table every day. We take for granted that if we get ill the doctor can even give us a new valve in our heart or give us a new kidney… We should be so grateful for all this… but we (most of the people)?are instead running around and screaming as kids when the bus is 5 minutes late… I think this is very interesting. We should be grateful for life and share our coffee with whatever it is… or just going in the mode of feeling that nothing is for granted… Thanks for watching and it’s so nice with lots of comments like this from all over the world. :-) /Matti in Jokkmokk

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNADifferent topic, but new to nordic skating, I appreciate some simple things you showed. I couldn't get my skates on without someplace to sit down, and watching how you did it really helps. I was trying to do both standing, and the first skate would try to shoot away while fastening the second skate, thanks! And beautiful dogs! I have a mixed breed border collie and an Australian shepherd. Both love the ice, but something about the skates causes the border collie to revert to his roots as an ankle nipping herding dog! Ha

We "lumberjacks" use the axe to test the ice... my grandfather use to say "If the ice hold for one hit with the axe, it will bear a man. Four hits and will bear a horse. And yes, "isdubbar" is a very inexpensive life insurance... and a skating buddy and a nylon rope... 🙂 Coffee should be brewed the way you do it, hot water before adding the ground beans. 4 handfuls of coffee in the pot, one handful on the fire. 😊 And yes, always share with the little people first! Coffee cheese... yes, I like it but it never was very common for us. I know the older people put reindeer or moose fat in the mug... I assume that's more of a Sami tradition...

Yes... the saying with the axe is really common. I'm always surprised that some people check the ice with the ax in one part of the lake... and then just take it for granted that it's the same on the other side. 😀 How to make coffee is like a religion sometimes. Nice that we have the same way. 😀 /Matti

I'm always fascinated with how you embrace winter/cold/ice/snow/strong gusty winds. I especially enjoyed your stories about the coffee pot & hand carved spoon. Ice, I've never thought about it being good, just something to be careful on when walking/driving or something to keep a soft drink cold. Warm Regards from bone dry Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

We are just starting to get good ice in central Minnesota. Got out on my first skate ski here too! Thanks for sharing your winter adventures. I would love to get a set of blades to go with my ski boots! What a great idea. I’ll have to see if anything like that is available in the US. Winter is a difficult but underrated season. Cheers from MN 😊

Some skate with cross country ski type poles - and inflatable life jacket and a dry suit in case you do fall into the water. I'm in the Canadian Maritimes and our ice may not be as steady/trusted as yours. Bt the distance you can cover is great.

Some carry a long pole 6'+ with a spike to check ice and in some cases might span the hole you fall into helping you escape. But the spikes (around your neck) are essential. I used to carry big nail in a chest pocket, but best to have them on a string.

I'm not doing a lot of ice-fishing. For me...you know... sitting close to a hole on the ice and waiting. I prefer to be more active. But it happens that I make some ice fishing and sometimes it's fun. In this lake we can catch abborre...hmmm... Pearce? ...and pike. Huge pike! In other lakes we also got brown trout and arctic shar... or do you spell it char... It's a kind/family of same type as trout. /Matti

Matti, we have the same and similar fish here: Northern Pike, Walleye, Perch, Ling Cod, Whitefish, various trouts. I usually fish in an icefishing tent or shed. It is more comfortable that way, especially if the wind is blowing. Thank you!

We are still waiting for good ice, its so nice to get out on good ice, I don't like the black ice either all though it can be a blast to skate on. We typically get one chance for good ice and its easy to miss, then it snows and rains and it gets junky. We can get some breaks in the winter where parts are fine to skate on as well. That is some sweet frost on the ice and grass. Know your waters is very important. we can get currents in places that cause thin ice even open water where the rest of the lake is very safe.

/Matti
