The laser is used to guide the FTIR source
@Bruker
@Bruker 2 жыл бұрын
The laser beam travels alongside the IR beam through the interferometer and generates its own interferogram. This is then used to measure the interferometer displacement (optical path difference) and calibrate the X-axis of the spectrum with very high accuracy.

@@Bruker so u mean different fucntional groups will give different IR spectra? Actually during my dissertation I could not do this technique because the instrument was not working, I was supposed to do this. I did TEM, X ray diffraction etc but could not do SEM and FTIR.

The paper I'm reading states the FTIR spectrum indicates low damage caused during processing. I'd like to ask how does FTIR spectrum indicates "low damage"?
@Bruker
@Bruker Жыл бұрын
Dear Lim Jun Jia, The question and info is very vague - but let's interpret "low damage" as "low amounts of damage done to a material or product", e.g. a polymer work piece. For example, you can assess the "damage" that has been done by oxidation due to sunlight or the chemicals the work piece was in contact with, if it is a container. Here, an FT-IR spectrum will clearly show the oxidation by AIR for example in many polymers. So maybe, similarily and depending of the paper your reading, this is meant by indicating damage, as it might change the chemical setup of the material. Hope that helps!

does ftir helps to find out the percentage composition of any compound say pet in wihich ?% of tpa and ?% of ethylene glycol ...?
@Bruker
@Bruker 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cathy, in general FT-IR is capable of analyzing even complex mixtures and it is especially suited for the analysis and quantification of polymers, blends, copolymers, etc. In your specific case (PET), however, I can't give you a final answer since each case must be tested individually. Maybe these videos helps you to learn more about FT-IR and polymer analysis: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5xja5mDnN2Xe5c.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtVxmZuptdXNcn0.html

Please how long does it take to prepare and run samples using FTIR
@Bruker
@Bruker 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Olanike, we have tons of videos showing how to prepare and run samples using FT-IR. If we are talking about a solid or simple liquid, preparation, measurement and evaluation takes roughly 1 minute - total time! For reference, take a look here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7p4a9qerpOZnKs.html

Dividing? you meant subtracting right?
@Bruker
@Bruker Жыл бұрын
Hey Mah Neh, dividing is correct. Here's a quick resource for you: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4327635/ However, if you want to analyze sample mixtures, you can subtract a pure spectrum proportionally from the mixture spectrum and reinterpret the remaining signals, also called "Residual Spectrum".
