I purchased family tree maker several years ago and I had no idea that the pushpin map was even an option. I have been using Google maps which can be very limiting. I’m excited to try this out for the new double brick wall I’m working on for my client.

I couldn't help but notice that you have not resolved your place names. This would seem to be an essential step before studying your family maps. Otherwise, I have learned a lot from your videos, thank you so much for taking the time to prepare and present them so well.

yep richard pointed that out too, as i told him i spent most the effort on finding who my dna surprise biological father was, i will test it again with family #2 LOL i bet it works better with them as that tree was polished, this one is not nearly as polished. Once i found my biological father, most of my effort has been to help others find their dna surprise families and i haven't taken the time to do mine :( i hope to get to that at some point. for now its a juggling act of helping people and videos :)

Very useful video. I had missed the push pin mapping feature. It is great. The places mapping push pin tool "bugs" might be mostly in the way you added locations text in your person profiles. FTM has "standard" formats for addresses and probably your locations were not in standard format. I checked my grandfather and it showed some exact addresses in Brooklyn as being in the middle of Central Park in Manhattan. Definitely wrong. I went back into his residences in 1910 in his profile and noticed the little ? to the right that meant that I did not have the official format for the address. I clicked on the ? and FTM brought up the "Resolve Place Name" tool. Make sure you move the place street name up to the "Place Detail" field. After fixing the address, I went back to the places map and the push pin was correct. There may still be some mapping bugs, but many of the ones you saw may have been your data not matching the format they wanted.

good information, yeah is probably in my dates, i merged several dirty trees into this one when looking to find my father. i was not as concerned about the "little things" at the time as priority 1 was figuring out who he was. when i get time ill lok to see if that resolves

I have been making my own maps for years using GoogleMaps and hand drawings (what a mess.) This feature has lots of promise, but is a little "buggy" with the pin locations. I have an ancestor with 3 residences on the same city block, but the pins are all over the city. Even when I unclick the last one. Looking forward to some fixes here.

One point to consider is where was the mother of the child when the child was born. Not necessarily where the father was at the time....

+James Mackay definitely! In my mother’s case, her mother in California, dad in war overseas

I have purchased FTM and it is installed on my laptop. Now I purchased a new computer that doesn’t have the place where you put in the cd - how do I get it from one computer to the other?
@DNAFamilyTrees4 жыл бұрын

sorry that FTM didnt work for you, their Customer support is .... "Lacking" to be polite. This feature is "Touchy" and requires city/state information in certain formats or it wont work. Not sure what exactly didnt work to try and assist. Nothing is a bit to broad for me to address specifically. if there is something particular u wanted to try to get it to do and it didnt id be glad to see if i can repeat the problem and maybe identify a workaround.
