To answer the magnet question: It is all about how the molecules are arranged. It happens naturally, neodymium being the most famous example. They can be made by heating up steel and put it in a strong magnetic field, so it arranges all the molecules the right way. Once it cools, they settle like that. If you drop it, it can lose its magnetism. The difference in arrangement is a 3D cube with a molecule on each corner, and either one on all faces (Face Centered Cubic) or one in the center (Body Centered Cubic). The FCC is ferretic, magnetic metals, while stainless is a BCC, non-ferretic metal.
