6 years ago I decided to find out how a camera worked in manual mode because I had no idea, I typed it in KZfaq and one of your videos came up, you explained everything so clear, I watched all your videos and over the space of about 6 months learned how to properly use my camera and to this day still loving photography! Anyway I just wanted to say thanks because if it wasn't for your videos I might not be the photographer I am today. Thanks Gordon. Jake.

This is the best, most comprehensive KZfaq camera review I've ever watched. Well done, guys. You hit every single point I would have mentioned except one: it would be nice if Fuji offered an RGB histogram option. Like the AEB feature, this doesn't seem like a hard thing to add with an update. Thanks for the great vid!

Gordon, I totally agree with your in depth comments about the reason a touch screen is needed - video. Two weeks ago, at an Anderson, Rabin & Wakeman concert, I used the touch feature of my iPhone 7p to adjust the exposure to Anderson when he was singing or Rabin when he was soloing, etc, so I clearly see the advantage of getting from point A to point B without accidentally reseting attention (focus, exposure) to areas in between when using a joystick. I can only imagine how well it would work with the XT-2. I don't take many videos with the XT-2 and won't until I become fully proficient with it as a still camera, But I'm sure I will and would appreciate the advantage of a touch screen. Maybe XT-3?

Thank you very much for this highly informative review! I've been debating which first general-purpose lens to get for this camera, between the 23mm f2 and the 35mm f2. I've enjoyed your written review of the 35mm f2 at camera labs, and I was wondering if the same conclusions regarding the corner sharpness, center sharpness, bokeh style and minimum focusing distance could be drawn for the 23. Thank you so much!

Thank you for such an extensive review of the new X-t2. I was especially interested in the Image Quality of the new X-t2 compared to the older X-t1. Your website did an excellent jog of comparing the two cameras. Your sample images show that the overall increase in Image Quality may not be that significant unless you blow your photos up quite large. I don't do that, and many of the break-through features on the new X-t2 don't apply to my type of photography. For now, I am not going to pursue the X-t2. Thank you for providing me with the information I needed to make that decision!Taking the time to compare the Image Quality of two cameras (or more!) takes a lot of work and I appreciate that you make that effort, over and over, for us. Best, Bob

Gordon, thanks for the review. But I wanted to say that you probably should edit your video when you talk about the 18-55 lens. That wobble is GONE after you do the firmware update. I own 2 of them and they all did the wobble on video on both my xt2 and xpro2 UNTIL i did the update. So its a disservice to fuji to stay clear of that lens for video.

Could they do what nikon is doing and make a electronic stabilization mode for prime lens and that also helps the algorithms when using a OIS lens as well. That would be amazing, and it is very possible no need for a built in one.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 жыл бұрын
The problem with electronic stabilisation though is the camera needs to digitally de-skew and re-rotate the image which has a detrimental impact on quality. Plus there's an additional crop. But it is still a solution...

Hi Gordon, Excellent review, thank you very much. I got into photography about 1.5 years ago and have watched a lot of your content since. I started with the OMD EM5 ii and all the pro zooms. However, I do notice the noise, limited DR and poor focus on moving objects. I am an environmental scientist and require an 'all round' camera - macro, wildlife, landscapes and people in good light and low light etc. I rarely print so its mostly for online. I understand there is no do it all camera, however i am chasing a camera that is closest to it. Would you suggest that this new Fuji would be good for all round use, or would you recommend moving to a full frame product? A big part of what I shoot is landscape which is my main concern with the Fuji. Thank you again for your work, ill shout you a coffee.

Is it too much to ask for an APS-C sensor mirrorless camera with IBIS, a fully articulating touch screen, and good manual controls? All this technology is tried and tested.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 жыл бұрын
The XT2 with a fully articulated touchscreen and IBIS would be my perfect camera right now. The first part is possible, but the second is trickier for Fujifilm as their lenses have quite a tight imaging circle with little room to accommodate a moving sensor. BUT who knows they might work it out. I hope so.

On editing photos in camera. I won't do that until they give me HSL, full latitude with the files, graduated filters, radial filter, spot removal, etc. Basically I need lightroom in my camera xD Otherwise I will always be shooting raw and making my own JPEGs. It's not like I can't imitate Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic, Canon, etc presets on lightroom. I *am* however big on getting exposure just right in lightroom, but I do expose for max dynamic range so adjustment will be needed so images arent on the flat side. I've developed these habits because it's allowed me to get the most keepers per shoot. Basically I expose like a video shooter. xD 'm all about latitude.

Gordon, no one would wonder about the viewfinder while having a look at your photos. That's an argument for trolls and salesmen. I will get a mirrorless but not for that specific reason or for a sensitive touchscreen. ML to me is too much battery sucking to consider (mostly due to evf you praise). Better batteries would be a huge step but also better tracking would be an improvement. But for now, the ML is a cool accessory with poor value for money (i never needed a battery grip with my D610, same for my d80 that holds battery forever). Now, if it's the Fuji comes as a gift I'd gladly accept it for it will help get the weight off of my holidays luggage. cheers Gordon and thanks a lot for the extensive honest coverage including the flaws of the xt2 (-:

if you really shoot a lot of video with the x-t2 use a monopod, tripod, slider, gimbal...I had the a7ii, a7r2 and ibis is good but really does not replace a monopod, gimbal....the only ibis which can nearly replace it is the one of the omd em1 mk2 and that camera costs body only 2.000$ for that price you get the x-t2 + booster grip

The story that I heard was that the image circle thrown by the X series lenses is not big enough to allow an IBIS in which the sensor has to move. Or in other words, they made the lenses just to throw an image that covers the sensor, so if the sensor has to move, you'll get areas that are not covered by the lens. If this is true, Fuji X will never have IBIS unless they make the sensors a bit smaller.
@frthway
@frthway 7 жыл бұрын
They could have introduced a slight crop (x1.1) like it is done with 4K video, and users would have a choice whether to use it (with a small sacrifice) or not...
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 жыл бұрын
Sadly it'd involve a bigger sacrifice than just a crop - there'd be more pixel wrangling to de-skew and de-rotate the image, so there'd be a loss of quality.
@frthway
@frthway 7 жыл бұрын
That's a really interesting question actually.. Do the likes of Olympus really sacrifice image quality when IBIS is activated, or is the processor strong enough to compensate? And would image quality still be compromised with IBIS off? It just feels like this choice could have been offered to users... Oh well - I got along fine without IBIS till now...

Gordon, the different fuji cameras has different sharpening in camera. The X-T100 I cannot use on auto because then its oversharp and when you pixelpeep it looks nuts. I cannot stand it so I keep it on minus one at least. X-T1 is quite soft and I think X-H1 is even softer. I used to look for the sharpest cameras on DP review and it was DP review that led me to X-T100. Sony a 5100 does not have this issue, it beautiful. And eos M100 too. And if you compare eosM100 with Nikon D5000 you find that Nikon is almost as detailed though its half the mp of M100. Professional photographer's that only shoot raw does not run into this problem. I wonder why noone talks about this.

Depends on the sensor and film sim. There's plenty of flat sims on Fujifilm cameras if you prefer a less sharp result. XT2 is pretty old now though, so I can't think back that far. I'm testing the fifth gen at the moment as you know.

Great review, thanks. I will be fascinated to see the comparisons between the XT2 and the Olympus EM1mii, and how they compete in the market. Fuji may have a larger sensor but in many situations Olly's stunning IBIS will prove more useful, particularly for video users. Fuji lenses might be cheaper than Olympus' Pro range, but their new 12-100mm will be the only lens many people will ever need.

Add manuell controls of aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc direct on Camera, big viewfinder and in general small compact, Inconspicuous, rugged, durable Camera and system. That should sum it up. The price of system. Well i'm not impressed with the Sony lineup system. Hope this was helpful.

Hi Gordon! First, let me say your reviews are incredible! But let me ask you something. I'm into portraiture and leaving my Canon T6 for a new system. Eventually I do landscape and some video, just for fun. I am trying to decide between Fuji X-T2 and Nikon D500. Honestly, I am leaning towards Fuji. But it feels like every time I think I've made my decision and I'm reaching out my arm to get it, I read some opinion like "the D500 low light performance is better" or "Nikon's focus system is amazing" and automatically take a step back. My plan is to pick the body and one or two primes, like 35mm and 50mm. Which one do you think I should get?
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 жыл бұрын
The D500 is a great all-rounder, but you're paying extra for an AF system and tough build quality that's aimed at sports, action and wildlife shooters. If you're shooting action it's one of the best around, but for landscapes, i'd personally go for the XT2. PS - if you're ever buying anything at Amazon, B&H or Adorama, don't forget you can support me by going through my links on the reviews at cameralabs.com - thanks! Hi Gordon, i make my living with low cost Real Estate Video Walkthrough and we currently use the Lumix G5 that is an old camera. And now in 2017 we want to use a better camera to improve the image quality of our videos and I am undecided between the Panasonic GH5 and the Fujifilm X-T2. Which camera do you think that is better between the new GH5 and the Fuji XT-2 for the type of videos that we do. One important factor to me is that i need to spend the less amount of time possible doing Color Correction, Is true that the video footage from the XT-2 require less time in the computer doing color correction than the GH5 video footage ? Well I was briefed by the Fujifilm engineer who designed the AF system 'bro' so I'm pretty sure I was using the right AF setting! To be honest, they're quite different cameras in this regard. Fuji has made great improvements and under the right conditions with the right lenses, it can do very well. But the D500 in my tests is still superior, especially at tracking. But again it very much depends on the conditions and subjects. I'm just pleased the Fuji's are now good at this.

Hopefully the X-T3 will have electronic stabilization since they have admitted they are increasing the megs but only by around 4 meg on the sensor. This makes no sense. Who cares about an additional 4meg? I suspect the sensor will be a bit larger in order to do electronic stabilization. It will probably not cover roll like the mechanical stabilizer on the X-H1.

Rented an X-T1 for a dance competition (before the last AF firmware update), and shutter lag was minimal but noticeable vs an OVF, shooting continuous high, but the X-T2's apparently again, much improved. for me personally though, while fuji lenses aren't expensive for what they are, (made in japan, metal bodied, aperture ringed solid high quality lenses) they aren't affordable to me as someone whose gear isn't paying for itself. therefore... i'd go X-T1 (or X-T10, cuz i'm broke) and put the extra cash towards lenses and/or a nikon F mount adapter for my manual primes.... But if I had the dough... I'd get the X-T2 for the AF joystick alone....

If budget is an issue, I would say go for the X-T1 and invest in good glass right away. The X-T2 would be better for sports, but if you can't afford a good tele lens to go with it, then it kind of defeats the purpose. The X-T1 with the latest firmware is no slouch and it has 7fps which is pretty decent. Just my two cents.

New X-T2 owner here. I'm having the hardest time tracking my kids with continuous AF. I'm using the 35 f/2 and I've tried so many focus setting combos. I came from Nikon and had no problem tracking in AF-C 3D. I'm starting to wonder if I just got a bad copy. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Something I often wonder about is whether or not spot metering follows focal point location, so that exposure is set for that part of the subject which is in focus, rather than the central part of the frame. I don't think this happens on my A7R II but does it work this way with the X-T2 (or any other camera for that matter)?
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 жыл бұрын
It's a good question and one I've answered in my review at cameralabs.com ! Sadly spot metering is NOT linked to the active AF area on the XT2, nor indeed on most cameras. In fact it's only linked on very high-end cameras.

This feature is available even on my XT10. It would have been strange for the XT2 to omit it, and indeed it seems that it IS supposed to work according to the manual: fujifilm-dsc.com/en/manual/x-t2/menu_shooting/af_mf_setting/index.html#interlock_spot_ae-focus_area

BEWARE new Fuji camera. I got an X100F. I'm a B&W photographer. I've got an X-Pro2 and just traded the F for an X-T2 because the B&W on the F had a brown tint. I figured if I upgraded to an X-T2 I'd be happy since I have 4 primes anyway. Now I have green on the top and magenta on the bottom of straight lines in ACROS. Ask me if I'm PISSED. Be VERY careful if you buy a new one. Fujis are buried with backorders and they are cutting corners calibrating (which is the most time consuming part of the quality check.). What are the chanced of getting two duds back to back? I called what I heard was great customer service. They didn't seen too concerned, that I had to pay for shipping and it would be a month before I got it back. DO NOT BUY A NEW FUJI X-T2 or X100F unless the dealer gives you all the time you need to check it out thoroughly!!

If you use Fuji JPEG most or all of the time like me, you’re waisting your money on type ll cards. A 95m/sec type l will exceed the speed of the camera on JPEG writing to buffer. In fact I’m told type ll may be a bit slower with JPEGs because of the pin-outs.

Does fujifilm make stabilized lenses for this camera?
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, most of the zooms are optically stabilised. But none of the primes so far.

Hi Gordon, although you comment on the lack of in-body stabilization in the Fuji X-T2 body, you did not comment on the degree of stabilization in the lenses. How many actual stops of IS did you get in the field with the Fuji lenses? I have read anywhere between 4-5 stops. And what about composing shots with those lens? Was OIS useful then?
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 жыл бұрын
Their optical stabilisation works well on the lenses I've tested, especially models like the 50-140mm f2.8 and 100-400mm, but I prefer to shoot primes and right now none of them are optically stabilised - which for me renders models like the otherwise lovely 90mm, had to use.

Isn't anyone else bugged by the angle dip on the dial deck? Makes the whole otherwise beautiful and functional design look...well..."dippy." The whole thing looks like a wedge even though it's an optical illusion. Why does a Leica M10 or even Fuji's own X100F look more serious? No dippy non-functional design "flare" thingies with no function. I get that Japanese aesthetics are more organic and all that, but this is a flaw in design. Even height columns on the Parthinon looked great on paper too. I've tried to leave a comment for Jun Sato but there's no way to contact him. Fuji listens, but apparently only to pros on their list. If anyone else agrees with me please try to get through to Fuji design team before the X-Pro3 design is locked in.

great video as always - still ways to go for Fuji - No Touch - No IBIS - ( 16-55mm F2.8 has no IS ) very slow focus in their faster primes - their 70-200mm F2.8 eqv has so so bokeh, not good enough for wedding work yes nice IQ and nice tracking focus - beautiful looks - nice EVF - I have 2 XT1's and a 1 XT2 and yes enjoy using - but I still enjoy my Panasonic's better to use - with Touch - so many soft Fn buttons etc - but of course smaller sensor

I agree with you. Sadly I doubt IBIS will ever arrive on X series, although they are now putting touch on some models like the XT20.
