I appreciate that the Fung Bros brought up the interviews that the CRA cast has been doing recently and Ronny's answer to how we should respond. I agree that the non-Asian interviewers probably didn't have the intention to offend the cast and Asian culture because it's true that there are MANY different cultures that make up Asia and Asian-American culture is different from them too, which can be confusing for those who don't experience this cultural diversity. We should be patient and help others understand that Asian cultures are diverse, but also move on and focus the discussion back to Asian representation in the industry.
@CS-vh3xk
@CS-vh3xk 5 жыл бұрын
Its sort of a surprise "Hey, 4 billion people are Asian and (most) non-asian Americans have little to any idea what that means." The interviewers aren't scholars, just entertainers. They don't know what they don't know.

Um I think a lot of people are missing the point people are trying to make. In Singapore, multiculturalism is a core factor of the country. The national anthem of Singapore is literally written in Bahasa Melayu- the Malay language, not in Chinese. When the movie and book used Singapore as a backdrop for a story about a dysfunctional and ultra rich family (and an American-Chinese's journey in understanding South Asian values), they missed out entirely that Singaporeans are not just exclusively Chinese faces. Singaporeans are Malay, Indians, Chinese and Eurasians. We don't expect the movie to be ABOUT all South Asian races, but when they wanted to use Singapore as that backdrop for a story, they should NOT have discounted other Singaporean faces. Even having Indian and Malay wedding guests at the wedding party scene would have been good enough- because this film is showing Singapore to the world, and not correctly. Now people think that Asians=Chinese, and that Singapore=Chinese- THAT'S the issue. There is something called Chinese privilege in Singapore, and this film exemplified the height of Chinese people's privilege- to have their faces shown to the rest of the world, but not the other Singaporean races.
@JJdakilla
@JJdakilla 5 жыл бұрын
The problem is that it doesnt represent any actual Asians, only Asian-AMERICANs. Pundits in Singapore have written that the movie shows only the worst sides of Singapore (ethnically Chinese people tryna act white, discrimination of 'brown' minorities) and its not even clear whether this movie will be released in mainland China at all since demand is low. Lets face it, this is a movie for ABCs.

I've never seen such a Chinese casual interview... food, chatter, and a nice joking attitude Asian-style. But at the same time I love the politics that you guys shouted out and what it means to have the title CRA on the silver screen. Very cool.

I tell people all the time: Don't wait for someone else (especially someone else who doesn't have your background, heritage, story, interests, or experiences) to come along and make something or do something you want that doesn't currently exist. You have to do it yourself. Otherwise, be prepared to wait a long time.
@JulianneHannes
@JulianneHannes 5 жыл бұрын
It's not that POC are waiting it's more that they're denied opportunities, connections, support, and resources that white men have as a given, POC are trying their hardest to make it and have their voices heard but the gate keepers are priveledged out of touch big ego white men who assume they know better than them. Ronnie making it is nothing short of a miracle because every odd was stacked against him.

This movie was an excellent and great way to introduce asian culture into cinemas. The goal of the movie wasn’t to portray an authentic asian story but rather subliminally depict the expectations of asian Americans but set in a love story. Hate on it all you want, but it was a good ass movie filled with people who I look similar to and that’s all I can ask for.

What I love about your guys channel is you guys are allowing people to speak and share their experience more than feeling like it's a FORCED INTERVIEW! Less than 20% talking from the Fung Bros and more than 80% listening! As for the interview on the movie, I am happy that I clicked this video because they talk a little more about life in general even where the movie does not talk about it. Of course the Asian community is too vast to hit all in ONE movie but I think this movie will do amazing wonders and open many more opportunities for other stories to be told. Kevin Kwak , the pressure is on but I still loved your books either way lol

I'm Vietnamese and I absolutely love CRA. There were a lot of commonalities between the culture of Chinese people throughout the diaspora, that I know of, and Vietnamese culture. And the movie even touched on this with the red dress detail. Not every Chinese is the same. Constance Wu's character's mother assumed her bf's parents to be traditional and hence a red dress would look good. She got it completely wrong.

I'm Filipino, and while CRA is about Chinese/Singaporeans, there's definitely things I can relate to. The Henry-Eleanor dynamic reminds me of my mom and I, and while my parents are pretty chill, I went to one of my auntie's houses and I got put through the wringer. "Why aren't you married yet?" and "When are you going to have kids?", etc. And how parents never necessarily say "I love you", but they show it in different ways. BTW just saw the movie a couple of days ago, and it is DOPE.

I went to see the film in Toronto and saw a white Canadian couple in their late 60s and 70s. They were sitting near the front and I felt so ecstatic because this film isn't only for the Asian audience, it's for everybody who loves rom-coms, cultural insights, dramedy genre, and deep, life lessons. It was brilliant in every way. Thanks to everybody who made this film possible to be seen on the big screen.

I get that some people might be upset that this movie doesn’t portray say Vietnamese Americans or Filipino Americans but can we all just acknowledge that this is a first step. I’m chinese and I’m very proud of this movie, I’ve watched it twice already both times in theatre. This film gives great exposure to the Asian American community and that itself is a huge stepping stone for more to come in the future. Let’s all celebrate this amazing movie and uplift each other so that all stories will be told in the future.

One thing. I want to add on and kind of correct what Ronnie said. This is just good to know information :) African Americans get lumped together too. There are the Americans, Afro-latinos & English-speaking Afro-caribbean people and all their different cultures. I had an African American friend growing up and we always had debates on our differences (I'm Jamaican)--down to which vegetable is better (she says either mustard or collard greens and i say callalloo and i recommend everyone try both!).
