When did you arrive in Sweden? How long have you been in Sweden? If you visit Sweden, you'll be asked these questions a LOT. But do you know how to answer them?
In this video, we discuss the most common mistake that Swedish learners make when discussing "how long" they've done sometime. It's tempting to answer in the same way as English, but we're here to help you avoid this common mistake!
När kom du till Sverige?
Jag kom FÖR _____ SEDAN.
Hur länge har du varit i Sverige?
Jag har varit i Sverige I ____.
In English, you would answer "I've been in Sweden FOR one year," but in Swedish, you answer with "i". Jag har varit i Sverige i ett år.

"Accepting that all languages have their own way of seeing the world is the key" : one of the most important and underrated tips to learn a language! Letting go of your native language's point of view and learning a new one is part of the experience :D That being said, as a beginner in Swedish, this little "i" preposition is my nemesis! 😂 Tack så mycket för videon!!

When i started learning, i thought i'm just being trolled with things like "Jag talar inte Svenska" but "Jag talar SHvenska". My friend lives in Göteborg. So i asked her about this "r+s" becoming "sh". And she just replied "What do you mean? We don't say it like that". So i asked her about museum in Sweden, Arsenalen. And without missing a beat she said "Ashienalen? It's an awesome place to visit!"
@FunSwedish
@FunSwedish 2 жыл бұрын
😅😅 It takes some self awareness not everyone has to notice the r+s = sh sound. Most Swedes will have no idea what you are talking about while at the same time doing it. So good thing you noticed 😊

Wow, I never thought about that! Amazingly attentive! Edit: of course, in "Arsenalen" or equivalent words I'm well aware. But never realized it also happens as a bridging phenomenon between two words!

Tusen tack!!! I have completed Duolingo's Swedish course (they added 12 units then and I am about to complete it too) and was still unsure how to say "ago" properly. So I kept telling dates like "kom i 2004" or "började att lära mig svenska i november". Tack så mycket för förklaringen! ❤

Another thing is to only use English as a guideline if it’s your native language but don’t solely rely on it’s grammar rules. For example, in English, a sentence could be “the dog is drinking water.” Instead in Swedish its “hunden dricker vatten.” So, it’s like, “dog the is drinking water.”
@FunSwedish
@FunSwedish 2 жыл бұрын
Very true. Swedish translated word by word to English sounds very strange because of that.

@@FunSwedish I learned after over 15 years of learning different languages off and on you just have to train your brain to not rationalize certain grammar rules. For example, like Russian trying to say, “I don’t speak English. Ya ne gorovyu pa Angleski. But this translates to I don’t speak on English in English. Also, as a native English speaker, I still struggle to get grammar rules correct.

@beorlingo and what should I say if I came 19 years ago, but it was a short visit? Does it require clarification or saying "kom för 19 år sedan" is *grammatically* wrong in this case?
