@47:16 I don't get the opportunity to snap to the edge. Nothing highlights. I proceed anyway but then I am left with a 3 sided rectangle without faces to select in the later extrude step. If I abort from the line, the edges highlight again. Whenever line tool is active, the edges do not highlight. Google solved it: I needed to enable "Auto project edges on reference" and "Auto project geometry on active sketch plane".

Always fun to see different ways of doing things. I was following along and it when it came time to make the 3 nubbins I did them on a vertical plane instead and projected a few points/lines from the body to get the shape of the entire piece to extrude. Your approach seem more resilient to changes earlier in the timeline. Neat!

Loving these tutorials! I did have a question at about the 51:30 mark in the video. I was truly impressed when you moved the Shell forward in the timeline to capture the fillets of the outside surface. I expected I could achieve similar results by putting fillets on one of the three tabs and then bringing the Pattern command forward in the timeline. However I couldn't seem to move the Pattern command in the timeline. Was I doing something wrong or is there some fundamental reason why this should not work?
@cadcamstuff
@cadcamstuff 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! You can only move things as how they are associated with other things in the timeline. So for example, pattern command will only contain what was selected. When you try to pull it after the fillet, the fillet would not know what to fillet. The history still have to be able to solve everything in a linear fashion. Hope this is useful

I believe the issue I was having with planes being slightly skewed (by may be 0.5 degrees) was because I was starting planes without considering where to start them. I've been working on 3D printer parts and have noticed things like the axis mounts not not lining up properly with the rods or each other. I don't think it will affect the final prints, but its enough to be annoying. When starting a new component of a complex assembly, do you do a plane offset from the main origin, or do you start with an offset from another face? Which is the best practice?
@cadcamstuff

Hi Jeffry Garew Thank you for watching! Glad you figure out the issue. I normally create planes from one of the original planes

How would you add a vent to this funnel?
@TechnologistAtWork
@TechnologistAtWork 2 жыл бұрын
I would modify the object before I repeat the pattern. That way I only have to do it once and have it repeat around. The hexagon corners were not filleted properly like the original object. If you 3D print things, there's a big chance you're making replacement parts or parts that would mechanically interact with other existing parts so you have to make those shapes match the original perfectly.

You mention drawing skills. So far in the videos that I've seen of yours (all outstanding, by the way) it usually starts with an actual physical part and goes from there to figure out how to create it in Fusion. But much of the work that people do (or will do) with any CAD program is designing from scratch, without an existing part to work from. As one who came from the old school of doing most of my design work on a drafting board with paper and pencil, CAD presents a problem. As far as I can see there's really no way to just "sketch" (in the old sense of the word) and then refine that sketch until it's a CAD drawing. I'm not sure what the solution is. What I usually now do is use pencil and paper to draw out what I want, try to put in the basic dimensions, AND THEN go to Fusion. Is that the recommended way? Is there a different approach that's more suitable for CAD? Maybe there should be some videos on paper&pencil drawing for starting a design and then how to move from that to the CAD system.
@cadcamstuff
@cadcamstuff 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Roger Garrett Thank you for watching! What do you think of this video? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/laxjnMakmK3emGQ.html Best, Lars
@RogerGarrett
@RogerGarrett 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that short video contains a good suggestion about sketching things out with paper and pencil first. I'm thinking that, along with learning a CAD system, someone new to design should probably also take a course (or watch a video or two) about paper and pencil sketching. You also mentioned in that video the issue of getting something started quickly on the CAD screen because the boss might come along and he wants to see you making progress. And that triggered a memory for me from way back in the late 60s when I was first taking drafting courses at Northrop Institute of Technology. The teacher noted that, while you're sitting at your drafting board in the middle of a huge room with dozens of other draftsmen all working studiously on their projects, if the boss strolls by and looks over your shoulder you had darn well better be drawing something and that he's likely to ask you why you were drawing that particular line in that particular way and you had darn sure better have a good answer. Which was not a very encouraging statement to those of us looking forward to a career in engineering. I sure wish he had said something more along the lines of what you said in that video, that sometimes you just need to think things through before actually getting started, maybe even sketch out a few (eventually throw-away) drawings before getting down the actual design.
