In between the principal and common rafters why not buy some safety glass and cut it to fit the roof pitch and install? That would be a lot more cost efficient and would be one heck of a custom job. It would also give you the natural light! Like the cedar, great ingenuity on fixing the snow cat, and thank God for Fathers like yours! He is the best Dad, friend and Idol any Son could ask for.

This! The house would keep the nice looks and still let in lots of light, you can see that in the video how much light it lets in.
@michelewalters9421
@michelewalters9421 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinkinking is those long rectangle sections with safety glass would be a simple solution and would not cost a staggering amount and that natural light in would be so nice. I also know that you and your dad are so dang clever… That you could probably rig up a crank hinge so if you did put those long rectangle pieces into glass that you could crank them open with an inside screen for ventilation during the warmer times. Michele

@@michelewalters9421 Yes! Exactly what I was thinking as well. A nice compromise between the expense of custom glass filling in all the various triangles and completely sealing it off. However, it's his cabin to do as he likes of course. And the other thing is it might be a bit too "modern" looking for the esthetic of the cabin.

You have a real talent for telling a story , coupling that with very interesting content makes for an excellent watch, I really like the way you took us in detail through the cutting of one of the pieces of cladding. The cladding with the live edge looks really effective too. You could put thin windows in the gap that remains around the gable , I think they would be expensive and might be too much of a modern clash with the rest of the building. Its looking really beautiful and is a testament to the hard work of you and your family.

Great looking cabin! Just a thought: I'd be careful about putting your poly barrier on the cold side of the insulation here. Typically we shoot for vapour barrier on the warm side of insulation so that moist warm air doesn't condense (dewpoint) inside the wall cavity. Especially with the temperature gradient, there is a high likelihood that you will get rot inside your wall cavity here. If you're planning on putting windows in there, I would consider doing building paper on the outside (under the cladding) and poly on the inside between the insulation and the room. Best of luck with the rest of the build :)

That looks great! Just a tip though from someone who has done a lot of cedar siding; when you’re nailing the siding on, it’s best if each board only has one row of nails through it. You don’t want to be nailing through two rows of siding with a single nail, or putting more than one row of nails in any single piece of siding. What happens is that as the siding expands and contracts across the grain, it will pull against the nails and if each piece can’t move independently of the others, you get big cracks down the line. I don’t know if you already knew that and have a plan for that or not, I just thought I’d add my two cents. The cabin looks amazing though! You’re living the dream

Nailing top and bottom on each piece of cladding doesn't help that either. Plus using fresh green wood at its most expansive mean gaps will probably happen. Valuable two cents. He needed that 2 cents before he started. Good looking pad though kuzi.

I so love watching your videos. After seeing your ad for the headlamp. I decided I was going to buy one. Went to the linked site and put in all of my information. Went to checkout and found that the only payment option is PayPal. Bummer. I don't have a PayPal account. I was going to pay with my credit card. Why is PayPal the only option? I still want one but don't want to set up a PayPal account.

I wonder how well a hand framed triple paned window would insulate, made with plain cut glass, old school glazier points and compound. Would it get grimey between layers? Factory windows have a gas sealed between layers (nitrogen?).

Wonder what a portable 're-tracking' kit would need. The snow cat seemed to pull that log np. Are there any snowcat clubs or just the rare survivours? Thinking they would have service tips for the tensioner & maybe replacement track sources. Seems like it will help with winter access , unless reliability becomes an issue. Be Well & Bol

You're not wrong, going the window route would increase the cost when you have the lumber available and can do the work yourself. That said, I think you've made a mistake: the windows would let allot of natural light shine through and help make the inside more alive. As is stand, you'll have a dark spot on your ceiling, and that will make the interior feel smaller and with a dark mood. But hey, your build and I'm loving your work. Good job.

@@meandnature6452 agree, the extra work for the dormers is bs compared to windows on both sides of the gables, those would let in much more light. The dormers look cool from the outside but are just a gimmick from the inside.
