Batman Ninja was something we were all stoked for, but when it finally came out most of us we're less than impressed. But is Batman Ninja really such a stinker? Or are we missing some context to make this anime movie great?

When I first saw it, I knew exactly that it was going to be a crap-load of nonsense, since Bats is already a ninja, so I went in expecting dumb bullshit And I freaking loved it, gave me some good laughs, and Poison Ivy looked damn fine. But yeah, it's enjoyable if you've just turned your brain off, and expect dumb bullshit to be happening. Glad that you covered it, even if I wouldn't have minded if you didn't, it was still good to hear your thoughts on it.

If you watch the BTS stuff on the home release, you'll actually learn a lot of the mindset behind the director and screenwriter. They didn't want to just make a Batman film that took place in Japan. In fact, they didn't want to make a typical batman film at all. They wanted to make something distinctly Japan; something only the Japanese could make. They literally say "This isn't Japan through the eyes of Batman; its Batman through the eyes of Japan." Its not surprising at all that some would hate this film as its not at all a typical Batman story. Its just a dumb fun Japanese story using pieces of something westerns know to tell a story that couldn't be made in any other situation.

For all the strangeness in this film and out of character writing/odd adaptation choices I'll at least give these writers credit for recognizing and adapting my favorite thing about Damian Wayne; his almost super human ability to befriend random animals. I swear if you don't know about it you should look up this kids menagerie last I checked he had a pet cow, a great dane, and a what I can most easily describe as a bat-gorilla-cat hybrid called Goliath a pet monkey ninja is exactly the kind of friend I would expect Damian to make on a trip to feudal japan.

I've always been curious about how Japan see's American comic book characters. I like imagining a strange mirror world over there where a small section of Manga shops have place for American Comic books, a Japanese version of Toonami plays dubbed Batman: the animated series and Spectacular Spider-Man, and an ongoing debate in the community over wither or not the subbed version of Justice League Unlimited is better then the dubbed version.

Gaijin: Harley Qwin is a combination of Oichi (Nobunaga's Sister) and Ranmaru Mori (his squire, boifriend, lover and heir apparent) this is shown by her serving sake to him (something both famously did) the ball toy thing (which Oichi is sometimes depicted with) her acting as his aide in battle (like Ranmaru) and of course choosing suicide with the Joker on the boat (also like Ranmaru). And was Mitsuhide Akechi's betrayal really out of nowhere? Nobunaga constantly abused Mitsuhide, called his kumquat head, let his mom get killed in a hostage exchange, and the cherry on top: the burning of that one famous Buddist Temple I can't remember the name of right now. Actions that should be unthinkable for a Samurai are understandable (but perhaps not excusable) if you remember that he is a Man as well. Steadily chipping away at Mitsuhide's pride and face, Nobunaga subverted his retainer's honor and lay the ground work for his own death in Kyoto. Though Mitsuhide lit the flame, Nobunaga had built his own funeral pyre.

Honestly I have a kind of Meh feeling towards it because the movie has a lot of scenes building up some really good Ninja style sequences (Stealth, Infiltration, Deceptive Combat, etc.) but then instead turned to big explosions and giant robots, coming almost out of nowhere. Like after the whole bit with Batman committing to being the Shinobi he's being revered as and seeing all the cool ninja weapons/tools, I would have liked to actually see him USE those tools/weapons/techniques for more than 2 minutes. (Still overall not a terrible movie, I just think it has a problem deciding what it's tone is)

Tbh, I loved that movie. It's insane, colorful, oftentimes random and would make for an incredibly fun videogame. I'd rather have these takes on Batman than seeing another mediocre animated adaptation of a beloved graphic novel like Killing Joke.

Ahron 756 Power Rangers uses the suits props and stock footage from Super Sentai. Super Sentai has been around since like the 60s or 70s. MIGHTY MORPHIN Power rangers uses the suits props and footage from zyuranger but both series are completly different. Zyuranger revolves around warriors of ancient tribes revived in the modern era whily MMPR was about teenagers. The first season also had the same main villain but she had different names and personalities. The white ranger was from a completly different Super Sentai series which is why you didnt really see him interact with the other rangers much while suited up. There was no stock footage of the white ranger with the zyurangers. I also believe Lord Zedd was an original character for Power Rangers. FUN Fact the main actor for breaking bad did some voice acting for the monsters in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

You know with anime like my hero academia and one punch man becoming very popular take a lot of inspiration from western culture (notably superheroes) while shows like Thundercats 2011, teen titans, the boondocks, and The Last Airbender take influence from Japanese animation. i'm now curious on how people in japan views comic books are similar or different to how we view manga here. i have friends who big fans of anime and manga who only watch like 5 or less marvel movies and comic book friends who only watched dragon ball z and Pokemon so, this sounds like a great topic to discuss in a collaboration with a comic book focus channel like maybe comic drake or linkara or Arris from variant comics. i got this idea when i realize the character Twice from My Hero Academia almost feels like a copy of deadpool from appearance and behavior so i wonder if there's more You're welcome to use this for a future video

As an American comic book fan... This actually isn't that weird in terms of the batshit insanity that you can find in comics. Vampirella had a story arc where she had a Mad Max style road trip mutilating people attacking her in a world where nobody could die. Superman had some insane stuff happening during the Silver Age. Spider-Man had the Clone Saga. Comics by their very nature are silly and often insane.

Imagine Bruce still did that time hopping during "The Return of Bruce Wayne", but Barbatos never subverted the prehistoric Bat Tribe, and as such the Court of Owls was never formed. Instead, in this continuity, we get the Bat Clan. Because comic book logic. Still confused? Good. That means that you are still sane.

I'm a little surprised you didn't mention the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri references. Especially as you showed bits of the exposition sequence that featured figures in that style.

Nice, I tweeted at you asking about more the movie. Thanks alot, glad its worthy content. Watching it, it was silly and over the tops, but it also felt very authentic somehow. Hearing about all it got right thematicly makes sense.

You should check out the Batman Manga. It was written during the time of the Adam West Batman. It’s interesting, I found and read the copy’s that were available in my towns public library. Oh and it was awesome meeting you at Momocon. Can’t wait till you do your Golden Kamui video.

I actually gained an interest in Feudal Japan from the surprisingly semi-accurate depictions in the "Samurai Warriors" games, so I totally fanboyed when you showed the Akechi vs Oda fight cutscene. :)

I can't understand the shift in animation when Red Hood finds Joker. I saw something similar in the dlc mission in Asura's Wrath and part of an episode of Samurai 7. Is it just lazy animation or supposed to mean something more?
@AwokenGenius
@AwokenGenius 6 жыл бұрын
Dusty Bunny it could represent a dream? Or fantasy to better put it. Or to change your perception because of what the scene contains. An artstyle shift can do that right. So it makes you think "this isn't right, it feels weird" or something along them lines. Or its a reference to a certain art style :S

must be a japanese thing, they did something similare with naruto vs pain, when naruto goes crazy. I mean i can understand why they used it then, but still dont understand why in the batman movie.

I agree on the point of this movie being made for japanese audience and not so much for americans, it's a good movie in my eyes, but probably because I just saw it as it's own thing and didn't directly saw it as another batman movie

As a Batman fan I couldn't really enjoy it. Hell I clocked out at the monkeys gathering together to form a monkeyzord. Red Hood was waaaay to psycho and Damian was too nice. Dick and Tim at least seemed the same. It wasn't a bad movie. It was just a bad Batman movie in my opinion.

I think the Hide Bat Clan is a reference to the Bat Clan in DC Rebirth. When Bruce was hit with Darkseid's Omega Beams, he was sent back through time all the way up toward the Stone Age. Through many exploits (though not anything drastic) he unknowingly gained followers right up until the point he was returned and the Bat Clan was able to survive until the modern day.

I finally got around to watching the movie and it certainly was a wild ride, then came here. The black tea actually still made sense, as when you go to the past it is natural to get if someone reacts with surprise to something, it must be something not available in that time/location yet. And I perfectly understood the lycoris flowers reference thanks to .hack//AI Buster using the themes of lycoris flowers, especially given how one character is named Lycoris. Good stuff.

@Gaijin Goombah Media I know I’m not a Patreon, but for the next episode of Which Ninja, I really think that you should do the Ninja Monkey from Bloons Tower Defense 6. I figured this movie was made more for Eastern Audiences from the start. However, it was nice to see some cultural and historical context unveiled for the daimyo Penguin, Ivy and the others superseded. My favorite reference though has got to be the black tea as it relates to Alfred, my favorite member of the Bat family. I figured that green was a staple until the Meiji restoration, whether or not there was an isolationist ban on travel/trade. P.S. Oh my Hideyoshi! Grodd actually has the political savvy and the same headdress as his Japanese counterpart. And I remember you explaining this "first anime from Japan" thing with Hideyoshi caring for Nobunaga's sandals before, so that is a timely reference with that clip before cutting to the "Joker outright stealing Nobunaga's thunder" section.

Yo you gotta do a Which Ninja on ninja Kikyo from Bravely Default. What immediately caught my eye about her is that she emotionally can’t speak unless disguised. Not even when only around coworkers. Only thing I really want to add, Bats starting to doubt himself was supposed to be a dramatic narrative showing that Batsy had become too reliant on his Tech (which they have actually done once or twice in the Batman comic line), and his coming to realize both that and that he will have to rely more on his original training and ingenuity.
