Game of Thrones legacy is that; it changed TV for ever. Netflix needed a show to compete with GOT they created 2; House of Cards and Orange the new black, Netflix wasn't for original programing, they just were for contet library, (basically become an online/social media Blockbuster platform) therefore those show enhanced and boost Netflix subscribers, so they found a new business meaning, create in house your content instead of renting them from big studios every 2 years, then everbody fallows. Now Game Thrones as a show just went in decline in this case for lack of creative ideas, others show go into in decline because budget reduction or just the network (as you said) want to wrap up the show, becuase it was getting more expensive every season.

Season 7 shouldn't be paired with 5 & 6 man. 5 & 6 are great seasons while 7 is almost as bad as season 8

The reason why it doesn't work in the show, imo, is because they changed Tyrion from becoming a generally bad person to a depressed but good dude. In the books, Tyrion is going to Dany, but not for any good reasons. Tyrion wants Kings Landing to burn to the ground and also to rape and kill his sister. It would of made since to have tyrion follow this path in the show, him talking to that dragon blood in her and slowly convince Dany to burn kings landing to the ground. Tyrion is a MAJOR character, and changing his storyline is imo what doomed the show, atleast one of the reasons.

And HBO was likely willing to give them 3 more seasons, too. GRRM said so himself. But no, Dickus and Dickhead wanted to do Star fucking Wars.

The funny thing is usually studio interference messes up a show/movie. HBO not only stepped back, but they kept throwing a blank cheque at D&D. Unless there was a clause where D&D were the only ones to write the show for HBO, I'm surprised HBO just allowed them to end it in 8 seasons like that. They must've known what was going on with the shows' decline post-season 6 with ratings and Martin hinting in interviews that things could be better. And yet they let D&D just do what they did.

Wish it turned out differently, he's my favorite character. But it is consistent with the bias towards bittersweet/mixed endings and experiences of the novels and the show.

Why would they fight? They realized at Harthome that they could get killed by humans and controlled the undead, who did the fighting. Officers rarely appear at the front, unless they need to. In their mind, they were clearly winning when they made their move. However, they didn’t consider a faceless (wo)man, which they never heard about or were exposed to as they didn’t exist during the long night.

Listened to an interesting argument book Ned isn't stupid so much as unlucky. He thought he could safely give Cersei a warning since as long as Bobby B was King he figured Cersei couldn't move against him easily or quickly. Also book Ned gives his wife instructions to basically get The North ready for war so it would be ready if the Lannisters came for him and instead does something different by kidnapping Tyrion which results in Ned getting injured and not being able to leave King's Landing as fast as he would like. Also book Sansa spilling info to Cersei doesn't help either.

That’s not me being negative or depressing thats just the sad reality of the case where a man near his mid seventies has been working on a book for well over a decade and isn’t that close to the finish line realistically, and is getting more demands on his time, not less, the more work he attatched himself to the more strain he puts himself under but the better his projects will be, those projects make more projects, premieres, more producing, more consulting, none of those things give him more time in his own space where he can write, i bet when he actually sits down he’s too tired or feels too much pressure to even write another line unless it’s gold, or maybe doesn’t even feel like writing at all because he doesn’t want to that day. The most tragic and beautiful subversion he can probably ever give us is getting winds of winter out and passing away or getting dementia or getting parkinsons or getting ill or getting injured, the kind of thing that happens to elderly people when they try to stay active, he’ll probably be leaving the story unfinished before a dream of spring comes out, the worst thing would be for him to live to his 90’s but never being able to finish that wor, to have that story in his head a line at a time and never getting to do it. I adore that man, i think he is a treasure but we must remember that …Valar Morghulis, but i hope when he faces the god of death he says “Not today”

@@blondymonk1535 from the books the reveal of Jon’s parentage always seemed way too heavy handed for me, it was eluded to and laid on a bit too overtly for George’s style. When he met with D+D and they told him who they thought Jon’s mother was, their answer won his approval but theough reading the books that reveal seemed a bit too in the open, the way Ned talks to Catelyn about Jon and his affairs, the things he says and does with Jon, and the way the lore is spoken about, make it seem like it’s an obvious guess that would not need to remain a secret for so long to be the reveal, does that make sense. It seems so obvious that it’s almost like a red herring. The whole point of powerful revelations in many mysteries and thrillers is that the clues are usually there if youre paying attention and it’s solvable from early on. The R+L=J, seems more like it’s been dancing in front of your face not trying to be subtle because you’re supposed to think its that. Like the obvious bad guy at the start of a show who seems so blatantly guilty it must be them … except it’s not them and you missed who it actually was because you were so busy gathering the evidence it was your first guess that you ignore the points aiming at the actual villain

Daenerys particularly. Turned her in to a “villain” out of nowhere. Having her do something her character wouldn’t have done, at least not with what seemed to be the flip of a switch. I also don’t believe that Jon would have just killed her like that, he would have gone to every length possible not to. Jaime also should have had a more redeeming death.

In every other circumstance she made choices that while perhaps incorrect were always either in line with her morals or to reassert her authority as a wise and powerful queen. Her burning the Tarlys alive was both poor politics and a moral failure, as it showcased Daenerys indulging in a cruel choice for a perceived slight from a defeated enemy. Unfortunately, one scene does not a character arc make.

@@Christian-px2jw There’s many, many examples. Season 2 she tells the 13 that when her dragons are full grown she will lay armies to waste and burn cities to the ground, and that if they turn her away she will start with them. She has a singleminded obsession with power at any and all cost.

I think that's probably GRRM's intent too. Having one cathartic, simple confrontation is still realistic because not every single confrontation has to be one where both sides are equally justified. The story might've actually gotten too formulaic if it's always "nobody is completely evil... no exceptions... ever".

I’m totally with you. Every time a new season was about to premiere, I would rewatch, from the first episode all of the way up to that new season. I would always discover little things that I had missed in previous viewings. Now that it’s over, and I’ve found that I lot of the lore and plot points ended up being meaningless, I get no enjoyment from watching even the early seasons. D&D took all of the wind from the sails of GOT. They completely ruined, what was arguably the greatest entertainment vehicle of all time. Such a bummer.

I remember a year before the last season, whilst they were filming, some of the cast were interviewed, and you could just tell from the looks on their faces that something was really off. There didn't seem to be any genuine enthusiasm from any of them, Emilia Clarke's "BEST SEASON EVERRR" whilst nervously laughing, just said it all.

As someone who is reading the books I can tell you even in the first four seasons they had cracks not because of bad writing but because the writers refused to do plots that were crucial later on for the story so no matter what the show would’ve been ruined later on

The plotline was her going mad. It is a great story line and development of a character that has always wanted to brake chains and free people, but when left alone and with no allies would resort to the most extreme of measures. It makes sense, the show just didn't care to elaborate on that.

I agree mostly, but I think there were some moments that were meant to portray how she could have been a bad leader if she didn’t take the council of others and accept her mistakes.

Arya murdered people who directly rejoiced and helped in the slaying of her family, servants, and friends. Dany murdered innocent villagers and children who didn't even know her or have any choice in cersei being their queen. She also encouraged her soldiers to kill the soldiers that surrendered and laid down their weapons, admitting defeat. Oh and Dany pretty much obliterated an entire house as well. It's not a double standard. You're just another Dany Stan who can't get it through your head.

She’s been famously crafting monologues and dialogues throughout the show’s existence and in season 8 she complained about lack of elephants and drank wine. That’s it. She was robbed. If you look at any of the well done season 8 recaps on KZfaq, this was mentioned as being one of the major character assassinations.

On the Kingslayer point I don't think it wouldn't really matter who called him that first. In this world if you were to kill your brother or someone in your family you would automatically be labeled a kinslayer like Maegor was. In the same fashion if you were to kill a king you'd be labelled a king slayer by default. Yes Ned might have spread the rumor faster but there were dozens of witnesses who saw Jaime sitting on the throne, his sword bloodied and his king lying dead before him. All the other points are valid though.

Ned was the first one to call Jamie the Kingslayer but people would have called him that regardless of what Ned said. He did not father Jon he told everyone he was his bastard because Jon was a Targraryean and if Robert found out about Jon's true parentage he would have killed him. Ned fought against the Mad King because the Mad King killed his brother and father and then ordered Jon Arryn to cut off his head and Robert's head and he thought Rhaegar had abducted and raped Lyanna, his sister. There is a possibility he knew the truth about Rhaegar and Lyanna but that doesn't change what the mad King did. Arthur's death is so mysterious that we can't judge whether or not Ned killing Arthur was the right decision. It is possible he did not kill Arthur or that Arthur is still alive. Ashara has the same problem it is so mysterious that we can't judge if Ned was responsible for her suicide or if she is even dead. They could have showed her rule in Meereen failed epically, societal collapse, etc, she loose faith in her good will and just cares for power etc. They could have had tragedy of Dany with Drogon killing Jon's Rheagal (Jon's bond with Rheagal just gets forgotten, Jon didn't even cared Rheagal died) etc. Impromptu genocide of people she had no animus for and didn't benefit her in anyway is so unbelievably stupid for a story

There are interviews with D&D from as late as season 6 where they said Daenerys was "The good Targaryen" and "She's not like her father." They tamed Cercei down in season 7 made Daenerys go mad in the last two episodes of the series for a last minute shock. The people who say "the seeds of madness were always there" are just cherry picking her angry moments over exaggerating, but don't apply the same standard to Jon Snow for when he executed a child in season 6, or Bran for knowing exactly what would happen and then choosing not to warn anyone.

@@ruthnik We're in agreement that what we saw didn't make sense. However, I disagree that she was always going to become insane in the show. The idea that she's inevitably going insane is only "obvious" if we force season 8 to make sense retroactively throughout the previous 7 seasons by taking D&D's words seriously. Several other characters had more incentives to go mad. Example: Tyrion had far more reasons and signs to turn mad over the course of the first four seasons than Dany, and that would have been more satisfying than the Tyrion we got in the later half. Tyrion could have manipulated Dany, betrayed her and stolen her army somehow, maybe by convincing Grey Worm that she's been kidnapped to be executed in King's Landing or something and that this took place conveniently when Drogon was gone to eat, and her other dragons are left in their cell. Meanwhile she's left imprisoned or homeless in rural Essos having lost everything with no way to free her imprisoned dragons or find Drogon, being forced to survive alone in a worse life avoiding slavers are creeps. Tyrion would then attack King's Landing with her army to get even with the society and remaining family that treated him like a subhuman all of his life even after he saved them from Stannis in season 2. Then the dead invade during this conflict and the continent is lost to the walking dead. I wasn't necessarily hoping for this scenario, but he had the motive, it makes more sense and it could have been satisfying. That would have been fascinating and natural. Anything would have been more satisfying than what we got. I haven't seen that in any fan writing yet. If you've seen anything like a Mad Tyrion then I'm interested. Daenerys scenes get cherry picked like her screaming in Qarth, yet she never goes back Qarth to burn it down because she's just talking out of her ass in the heat of the moment, or the scene when she allows Drogo to kill her brother who was an abusive psychotic pedophile who just threatened to kill her. Then there's the scene when she executes the Tarlys in season 7. The double standard is massive. The writing in season 7 was terrible too, but she was obviously in the right to execute them. They just lost a battle to her, and they could have chosen to stay alive. Her terms that they rejected were extraordinarily generous considering the norms in that world. I was surprised that anyone thought she was in the wrong the day after the episode aired and articles started coming out comparing her to Donald Trump of all people. I've seen fans debate Book Dany's sanity and the fans are divided, and it's irrelevant to me. Daenerys was a different character from the books by season 3. I've seen drooling idiots label fans who critically analyze the any writing in the later seasons as "Dany-stans" even if they weren't for Team Dany. There are a lot of possible alternate endings that I would accept with or without Dany sitting on the iron throne, but crazy Dany is just too cliche for a series that had pride in avoiding fantasy cliches. The concept of having the dragon lady with magic supposedly in her bloodline go crazy is so generic and dull. Hell, they could have even inserted just one shot of Bran warging into Dany's head before she burns King's Landing and it would have made some sense then and all of the confusion and years of debates would have been avoided, because Bran is the ultimate villain in the end. It's obvious D&D are bullshitting and lazily justifying shock value if you watch their interviews from season 8 on every topic for every character, but especially Dany. The way D&D talk and make facial expressions about her motive for going crazy or missing Euron's fleet makes it seem like they don't even believe their own words. Watching them when the episodes were airing in 2019 was hilarious and now they're even more incredible. D&D knew they were flipping all of us off and hoping we wouldn't notice. D&D understood the fact that shocking scenes can work like the Red Wedding, but they didn't understand why those scenes worked or how to do it without someone else's source material. Shocking scenes need to be earned. Those two guys will be rightfully memed forever. There's a lot of speculation that the possible upcoming Jon Snow show will fix what D&D did to Dany and other characters that D&D threw away. I don't think the possible Jon Snow show will gain a loving audience without that since most of the audience still feels burned by the series' ending.

Things built up the entire series meant nothing in the end and could have just not been part of the story at all with how little it mattered at the end. If wanting it to make sense is "fanfic", ok. The first 4 Seasons i agree, but after that the Series got worse with every Season. You could even see some small crack in S4 already, but up to that point the show realy was amazing. What a shame.

Literally. this show was cultural milestone. The second it ended, it literally vanished. Nobody talked about it, nobody was buying merch. What was once the most defining show of the 2010s just dissapeared. Compare that to Harry Potter, a book series that is still a cultural staple

What plot line really got abandoned?

If you’ve ever played in a live band you know this. Nobody remembers any of your fuq ups if you all bring it home tight and in time at the finish.

I saw the clip of the Red Wedding and a parody of it before I had any interest in the show. I didn't remember the characters or where it was etc. But immediately made the connection when the wedding scene begun.

But when Dany did it, or when she lost major loved ones, it was all used to say "SEE! The seeds of madness were always there!" . . . . "She kills her enemies because she's a tyrannical psycho!" or . . . "She had no one else who loved her and so she snapped!"

Dany didn't do much to deserve the praise. She needed advisors to babysit her through every decision. She was gifted the dragon eggs. She flaunted her sense of entitlement without shame. She literally expected the whole world without having to do anything. Every other character knew they had to put the work in themselves. Even the worst of them were able to scheme something. Dany was a helpless idiot. I thought a major weakness of the show was just how unlikeable she was, with her irritating smug self righteous face. Cersei had much more dignity.

Impossible in my head to forget that the events that I see in this prequel will not have this rotten outcome that the GOT show runners have created for us. In House of the Dragon we have a few scenes where we are told about the threat from the north, the song of fire and ice etc. Impossible to take this seriously when we see how easily these events were defused in GOT.

not only was she the worst pick to kill the NK, her journey was never about that! She could have killed Cersei, she could have finished her list of characters to kill - nah lets make her kill the big bad bc she's so awesome. Arya used to be my favorite and they just used her as another Cool Protagonist Who Can Do Stunts. And the worst part is, her whole killing the NK doesnt even make sense, like how did she get to him, did she struggle, what was her whole plan? One does not simply kill the NK. But no, i guess the message of Arya's story is that if you are cool warrior girlie you can kill anyone.

Yes. There is strong evidence the earlier plan for season 8 itself had wildfire being what wrecks King's Landing. Since the actual "Mad King" planned to use it to do just that some groundwork had been laid. But what many people think of as rushing (and yes it was rushed) may partly be last minute changes. Since they are last minute they aren't well thought out and thus add to the sense of things being rushed since they were rushed already.

@@pplr1 I heard that and it makes a lot more sense. Especially if Cersei had a hand in it too. But I don't know how that would get Jon to kill Dany, unless there was some confusion that she had done it on purpose.

@@Allaiya. That was probably 1 of the plot holes D and D was trying to cover by making the change. Jon would see Dany wouldn't have wanted it to happen. Now in the books there is the possibly Jon may kill Daenerys as part of making a magic sword he may feel he needs to deal with the White Walkers so GRRM may have planned that. But that would be more of a willing and either heroic or redemptive sacrifice on her part to save Westeros. I see that as possible in the books since with GRRM a lot of the powerful magic is blood magic. D and D may have wanted some of the same emotional impact of Jon feeling he had to kill Dany when he didn't want to but since they likely removed the White Walkers too early in the show (before Cersei was gone rather than afterwards) then D and D made up another excuse to have a similar scene instead of using logic to ask themselves if such a scene should exist in the 1st place when it shouldn't. Also there was some foreshadowing Jon and Daenerys may have a child. Foreshadowing that D and D ignored in season 8. If Jon went the magic sword route this would leave Jon with the irony of having to raise a child without his mother after Jon himself had been raised with the belief he was Ned's son but not knowing who his mother was. EDIT: To be clear these are educated guesses at least partly informed by people who paid much better attention to details in the books than I. Since GRRM may or may not finish the books we may not see if they were correct or not. That said I do think it is true the earlier plan for season 8 was for wildfire to have a much bigger impact than the aired version of season 8 had. So at very least D and have shown a willingness to make major changes from their own plans let alone GRRM's (though details exist proving they made changes from his as well since Tyrion and Euron are very different characters in the books and the situation in Dorn is also different.)

I entirely agree. But, I think the source of this failure of writing is very visible in the books. The removal of critical characters wildly shifted the story and completely destroyed the timeline, resulting in characters acting in irrational or bipolar ways, because the character stuck to the same plot points they will hit in the books, just in a different order. Also, other characters seem to have been left behind in the dust, not getting a proper send off, resulting in awkward situations. In short I think this is best seen with King's Landing's Character Plotlines Young Griff, who is secretly one of the children the Mountain killed in the Oberyn plotline, invades the Stormlands, right at the end of season 5. He likely ends up quickly moving towards King's Landing, allying Dorne along the way. This siege ends up bringing Jaime home very quickly, seeking to defend Cersei and in some ways causing his character to regress. (Rather than regressing immediately after an extremely honorable arc). Cersei, fearing the Tyrells will betray her and being in a weak position does the same stupid moves with the Faith. After blowing up the Sept and wiping the possibly traitorous Tyrells, this instantly loses her the war. As quite simply, Young Griff would become a symbol of the faith, and the gates would be opened for him upon his arrival. Around this time, I think that Jaime would end up killing Daenarys. Its possible he dies a sad death in prison or something else by this point, or goes north and is further redeemed fully. This helps solve a variety of issues: Cerseis bizarre lack of plot after the Sept exploding. Jaime being bipolar. The Faith magically disappearing from the plot. It gives more reasons for Daenarys to go crazy. It moves the plot forwards, while detailing the past surrounding Robert's Rebellion (many of Young Griffs advisors fled after the Civil War.) Additionally this has knockon effects for Daenarys. Daenarys is wary of other Targaryen Pretenders. Daenarys is furious that someone comes in and steals all of her thunder and support, because fundamentally she wasted time trying to end slavery, an honorable goal. The only real loss here is that the Hound and the Mountain never face off. When characters ran out of book plot D&D just literally stopped writing them having any agency after S5.

I could never accept Dany killing all those people, she was a beloved character and you don't need to make her completely evil for her to go mad. She was good in the beginning so they should have found a way for her to go mad and die but in a way that left her with redeeming qualities, so you could look back on her life and say she did some good and her life was not meaningless . The way they ended her just leaves you sad for the character, she deserved more.

She was abused by Viserys her entire life and essentially sold into slavery by him, and yet she continued defending him and giving him opportunities to change right up until he threatened her unborn child. I think her reaction to his death was pretty justified by that point. And none of that changes the fact that her burning innocent people alive is completely contrary to her character, which is defined largely by her desire to free and protect the common people. No amount of development would make that work other than her just actually going insane, which honestly would just be lame and boring no matter how it’s written.

I just finished the show again for the 5th time hoping I'd feel better about it and I just didn't. What did occur to me this time around is that I'm not necessarily mad at certain decisions, it's the reasons for those decisions that make no sense. As soon as you find out the prophecy translation has no gender, in hindsight they told you right there that we might not get what we think we are. The whole time we're lead to believe Jon is special because he's the true prince that is promised and he's supposed to kill the night king. Turns out thats not why he was special. It didn't take anyone special to kill the night king, just a weapon made.of the right material. I feel like asshole and asshole got together and decided that they weren't gonna give us even 5% of what we expect. Misdirection for the sake misdirection. The problem, as we came to learn, is that when u have no reason for doing things, your explanations make u look even dumber i.e Dany forgetting about the iron fleet and her dragon dying. For 5 seasons Why was just important as What and Who and seasons 7 and especially 8, the Why went out the window. The 2 questions a fantasy series should never warrant are "Why did that happen?" and "How is that possible?" The latter seasons left us asking both of those way too much.

I'm honestly glad I watched it well after and got to power watched.

I pity people who never watched this as it aired and are now able to get into it knowing what awaits at the end. No disappointments, just knowing it ends horribly.

There is one show out there with just as massive twist as Jon Snow not being Ned Starks son and that is as big as GoT. And that is Doctor Who. In Doctor Who (still hidden but deducable) there is a mad child of 2 siblings ruining the 2 universis (plural) that child affects. (Read the Master) Hidden in that show the Master is having 3! parents, 2 siblings and a 3rd person. =the child is having DNA from 3! different whoniversis. On top of that the Masters parents 1 never knew they had that child, 1 knew but never told and 1 that forgot . There are several other plottwosts that GoT mimics (life after a death is one; and I do not just mean regenerations...) There are "celestials" protecting thier ascentions in Doctor Who just as well those that was negativly impacted by the process that ascended the "celestial" that does everything to stop that "ascention" both in Doctor Who and most likly GoT. If you want I can go into details.

Everything up until the last season was amazing. The fervent discussions and theories about how it would end, the endless gold standard memes, the rumours and behind the scenes leaks that caused all sorts of frantic gossip. It was truly special whilst it lasted, and it was something that could be discussed with anyone, like it was a sports game or something. It was a phenomenon, and I doubt we'll see its like again.

I'm old enough to remember the last time this sort of thing happened, there were only three channels to choose from.
