The series is based on books, five of them, and there are still two more to come. Until the fifth season, the scriptwriters, who are also the directors, were guided by them, and then they had to give continuity to a work they were not up to. They mischaracterized and ruined several characters, including my favorite and most damaged: Daenerys and Tyrion

@@brunaribeiro9246 I've head that few many times... but you've actually got to have been discombobulated to just simply ruin a series based off a lack source material. I wouldn't say D&D are that bad since we enjoyed a good 6 seasons of the one of the best TV series in history. Apparently they talked with GRRM before they even figured out the ending and started planting the seeds. The ending was always going to be like that, just that it wasn't compelling, rushed and they thought they could get away with shockvalue...You don't transition a treasured character like daenerys, pretty much loved by everyone in two episodes, it should take half a full season at least. Even if it makes sense on paper, it doesn't on screen for such a small window, so I agree in a way..

Is this so hard to understand: 1. Missandeis message was that Danny should go through with killing innocents to *get to Cercei*. Not just jump 120 units on the crazy meter and start burning everything and everyone she wants to rule. 2. As the Normies said: It would be fine to have all this happen had we gotten some time to build it up or had they executed it better.
@haasgaming
@haasgaming 5 жыл бұрын
She was definitely leaning this way and I don't doubt that George plans for her to go a similar route, the problem with this is that it's horribly rushed. It needed a full season of development and context, not a 20 min difference between her trying to resolve it peacefully and torching the whole place down while purposely ignoring Cersei. I'm all for Mad Queen/full Azula Daenerys, but it being rushed is criminal. (Still, episode had some stellar cinematography and sound design so at least this season looks pretty while it burns down)

I took it like... She wanted a fight after Cersei killed Missandai, she was already oozing with rage and anger and she needed to let off some steam... And when the bells rang she just wasn't satisfied. And that's the thing about Greyworm. He was in love with the woman Cersei killed. He wanted revenge. Both of them wanted the battle. Daenaerys has absolutely been crafted to be on a knife's edge of morals/megalomania from the very first season of the show, and the very first book in the series. To have her just get what she wants and still be a 'good person' would feel like a betrayal of everything Game of Thrones is. This isn't the kind of story where the good guy wins or even stays the good guy. It never has been. Someone said she was in control and still cared about the citizens prior to her break when staring at the Red Keep, but she was not in control of her emotions. Ever since she went North, the show made a point to show her increasing frustration with the people of Westeros, when they didn't want to bend the knee to her. That frustration and anger at being met with such opposition only grew. In this same episode, Tyrion begged her to reconsider burning everything, and her reaction was 'Meh, my mercy will come after. When the next generation is free.' She had already given up on Tyrion's advice and the people of King's Landing. In her mind, she'd worked so hard to get to Westeros, for this dream of being a savior, and the people there still didn't love her. The tragedy here, is that like Dany feared, once the gears started moving in favor of Jon OVER Dany, a lot of us saw this coming and knew it was going to fall apart for Daenerys. Dany's story to me, is a more human and tragic look at the development of a tyrant. We had always seen tyrants, prior to Game of Thrones, from an outside perspective or their own AFTER their descent. This is the first time we've seen it happen to someone we could like and understand. That's why it punches you in the gut. Not because it's character assassination. This murderous 'fire and blood' rage was always in Daenerys, and she finally got pushed too far. She felt alone, she felt like all of the citizens hated her. In her mind she had no reason to love the people of King's Landing, and in her battle lust madness, they too became threats to her reign. It's fucked up, it's terrible, but it is true to what has been built in her to this point. Missandei wasn't the only thing to push her over the edge, but she was the last real straw. That's my take on it anyway, though I do think had there been more episodes or another season, a lot of audiences like yourselves, would have felt that this progression was more organic, and it wouldn't feel so abrupt. Because it IS abrupt, due to the rushed pace of Season Eight. In that, HBO definitely did us all, and the characters, a disservice.

Very well said. I think you conveyed what the writers have completely failed to do so in the show, and THAT is ultimately my biggest issue with this turn and why I can't even bear to watch the last episode anymore because I do feel her character has been assassinated as a result of their poor handling of the writing and pacing. I don't think they did a good enough job even conveying that she had this madness in her up until this point. Dany is rash, but people forget she's also young. A lot of her threats in the past have just been that...threats. She always listened to counsel when it comes down to it. I think she's well within reason to be angry with everyone right now which would drive her to make even rasher decisions, but she shouldn't be looney-bin insane like they're depicting her to be. I will still maintain that that part was not earned at all and if anything, we should actually feel bad for a previously beloved and sympathetic character being forcefully driven to the edge and over rather than feeling gleeful at her demise.

A beautifully articulated, lucid and mature response in the middle of a stormy KZfaq comments section! What an unexpected treat! A knowledgeable person who gets "GoT" as the tragedy it is, not as the epic fantasy that the majority needs to justify the horror of war and the reality of those who feel entitled to rule humanity! And I agree with your statement that It might have benefited from a longer season or another one. But almost nobody realizes how ambitious as a TV series "Game of Thrones" is, and how demanding has been to write and produce a season a year, or two years for this extra epic one, for the production team, the cast and the crew.

Dany turning into the Mad Queen has been foreshadowed since the very beginning of the show. The problem is that her actual turn feels rushed because we got 6 episodes instead of 10 this season, so we don't really get to spend much time watching Dany's sanity deteriorate. The concept of Dany turning into a villain is good, but the execution leaves to be desired due to a lack of buildup.

The difference is Melisandre did it execution style. Dany did it in the midst of the battle. Shit happened in battles. Why peoples still gullible on Cersei is beyond me. Just coz they ring the bell doesn’t mean they’re going to totally surrender. What if she is just trying to lure the army in and start burning them all with wildfire once inside the city? Cersei is very much capable of that. And wdyk there’s a few green wildfire afterall, after Dany set them all up with Drogon ofc. I’m proud of Dany now, she’s so stupid in the few previous episodes. She knows what really need to be done to get the throne, but play all nice about it. Welp, she did it now and gj for that.

While she has done cruel things in the past, I mean they’ve all been things that rulers have done who aren’t considered “mad”. Like, burning the Tarlys for not bending the knee? That’s pretty damn common in the Middle Ages, forget about the rest of human history. Killing the Masters in Meereen by crucifying them? Rulers we have called “great” have done far worse. These aren’t indicators of madness, it’s just how things used to be done. And when it comes to this episode, cities have always been sacked, raped and pillaged throughout time, so it isn’t outside the norm. The disappointment, at least for me, is that it does in a way throw away most of Dany’s character development since season 1. However, she has lost a lot, and that would make most break down. I just thought that dany, considering all that she’s been thru, would not succumb like your average person.

Man, I guess nobody gets the main point of the massacre. When the bells rang Dany realized she hasn't "won" anything. No back up of the people, no claim to the throne, so she chooses terror. Dany doing things for terror is in line with her whole character arc. She ruthlessly burned thousands of men in uniform, slavers, oppositions. There is not THAT MUCH more necessary to run amok. It's just the state of denial most people are in. Also, even history told us so many times how ruthless the "good guys" can be: The completely unnecessary destruction of Dresden in WW2 (flames!) or the nuclear strikes of the americans. My gripe is that burning innocents with no real provocation is a far cry from burning enemies/people who are deemed to be enemies. Even Aerys' descent into madness was a long drawn process, fuelled primarily by paranoia, to the point that he saw enemies in every shadow (and people like Varys added to it by whispering in his ears). Burning enemies is a very normal thing. Aegon burned a shitload of people during his conquest, many times what Danaerys did in her entire life. Aerys was called "mad" not because of the burning, but the indiscriminate, paranoid way he went about it, where if he thought you were a threat for even a second, you'd get burned to death with him laughing maniacally. Danaerys' descent wasn't rushed, it was absent. It went from 0-100. It would have taken 1.5-2 seasons of betrayals etc for her madness to be accurately portrayed and would have been glorious if done properly.

Lol hold up, so you actually believe that taking over cities in which people were being enslaved, or killing people that had some sort of ill intention (such as wanting her dead, plotting against her, literally fighting against her in a war) towards Dany, not because they were told to believe so, but because they themselves truly hated her, is equivalent character action to burning hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children? That those just actions are equivalent to the unjust action of burning Kings Landing? It was bad writing, through and through. Daenerys' past actions were not leading up to this incredibly rushed descent of "madness" just because burning was the way she executed people. That's like saying since Jon has killed wights, men, and even a boy, that it would make sense if he all-of-a-sudden decided to go and massacre a bunch of orphans because "it isn't out of character".

Reasons (off top of my head) why everyone should have seen Dany heel turn coming: 1) No emotion or care when her brothers face melted off from crown and killing him (S1!) 2) Loss of her love Drogo 3) Loss of 2-3 of her kids (dragons) 4) Loss of Jorah 5) Loss of Meisende 6) Loss of her armies (unsullied & Dothraki) 7) Ruthlessness in Meereen 8) Ruthless killing of House Tarly (father and son) 9) No remorse telling Sam of killing father and brother 10) She has never shown remorse in killing anyone 11) Betrayed by Varys 12) Betrayed by Tyrion 13) Betrayed by John Snow 14) Turned down TWICE by the new person she loved John Snow 15) Seeing how everyone around her LOVED and respected John Snow after the battle of winterfell but nothing towards her 16) She’s Targaryen, it’s sort of in her blood... It felt rushed due to less episodes, however it was definitely not out of nowhere and out of character.

There are a ton of characters in this series who lost people, who committed ruthless acts, who killed people who betrayed them, etc. Jon Snow, for example. Would that justify him suddenly snapping and committing mass genocide? He has Targaryen blood, too. But I bet if he turned into a homicidal maniac there would be some disappointed fans for sure. Why can't people be disappointed in Dany's turn? She did good things, too. It could have gone either way. (And I say this as a non-Dany-fan - I could have totally bought a Mad Queen plot if they had written it more carefully and naturally. Everything has been way too rushed since Season 7.)

It's not the problem she turned mad. The problem is: She could've just gone for cersei. But no, she has to kill thousands of innocent people before while cersei might be able to flee. King Robert said this would happen in episode 2 of season 1. This didn't come out of nowhere. Dany is ruthless. In Mereen, she crucified every master and ended up killing innocents. In Mereen, the stakes weren't the Iron Throne and the former slaves loved her because she freed them. In Westeros, she is a conquerer. No one likes her. Everyone wants her gone. She was willing to go to war with the North to make them submit to her rule. Dany has always acted rash when emotional. She lost everyone that cares about her besides Grey Worm and has now lost 2 of her children. Westeros will never love her. She is alone. That is why she decides that they must fear her. Also, she made that decision on days without sleep. Dany has changed over the past few seasons. When was the last time she actually was helping the common people? She kept strict rule over Mereen and oppressed their culture. Dany wants to make the world a better place and to do that she has come to the conclusion that the old world must be burned down first.

It is established that Dany values being in power more than her love for people. I don't think she ever truly cared for the innocents, helping them was convenient for her and it allowed her to come to power and gather a following. In Westeros, she realized that she would never be loved by the people and envied this. Yes, it was obviously an overreaction to torch the city, but I don't think it was ridiculously out of her character. It always bothered me how she was unphased by the mad king's actions and was still pissed at Jaime for killing him, even after she was told the story.

I love to see how all this people justifying bad writing because they don’t like Daenerys. Is just bad writing the whole season people. For a lot of characters not only Dany. Helping slaves are irrelevant for her conquest in Westeros. Yunkai for example. Jorah advices not to take the city. She said "We have 200.000 reasons to take it" being 200K the slave population of Yunkai. They have not military value or whatever. Also when the masters recovered the city she sent a army to get it back. Also she never harm an innocent in all previous seasons. So yes. It's very out of character. @@mikehoot3978 I can't tell of this is sarcasm or not. First of all, one episode can't ruin a 8 season series. If it actually destroys your enjoyment of every previous episode you are a sad person. Taking back the city 100% benefited her, losing it was a direct question to her authority. She wanted to save the 200,000 people because she knew they would love her and support her thus giving her more power. There are literally dozens of other examples of her choosing power over love. Episode 5 did not kill game of thrones. You are just too dense to comprehend why Dany's turn makes sense. @@ocryptix7740 I understand it's been a few months now, but I just don't get why you think one episode can't destroy an entire series. She freed slaves not expecting them to love her or their allegiance in return. actions speak louder than words. She has always chosen freeing her people over ruthlessness. Until now and why? because Jon doesnt love her romantically? Seems silly. The arc made sense to her character but they needed more time to develop it. It just felt forced and out of the blue because of it.

Rozz well she lost her best friend Missandei, lost 2 of her children the dragons this has been building up and plus she’s a fucking Targaryen their words are literally “Blood and Fire” her father burnt people alive for fun and her brother molested her all her life and tried to cut out her baby I’m not surprised. Also I was hoping for a bitter end fuck a happy ending since this is Game of Thrones makes no sense for a happy ending.

Rozz Dany is even more brutal in the books , GRRM confirmed her mad queen arc. Also if you watch back the seasons Dany has always killed with fire right after she has already conquered. @Pro Jey96 What? She hasn't been learning, she very obviously got progressively worse over the seasons. They've been showing her becoming more and more entitled about the throne and characters have even explicitly been SAYING IT OUT LOUD half of season 7 and the entire season 8 that there's a problem with her she doesn't listen to anyone, if before she could be talked out of some of the murder (even so, only one instance she was talked out of it I can actually think of, the wise masters). A person believing that they know the truth and they have all the right answers and starting by killing those who are objectively "bad people/enemies", but eventually coming to justify the killing of anyone in the name of their "greater good, that only they know" is the oldest tale in the book. And it was obvious from a mile away. Dany fans are just bitter that the show stopped doing fanservice and finally cracked the delusion.
