@@abiraljha8752 He'd rather starve to death then break a promise. Also, Stannis isn't even going to burn his daughter in the books, Melisandre is against Stannis' orders. Stannis is 3 miles outside of Winterfell while Shireen is at Castle Black.

Two things make a man loyal, respect and fear. The North is the most isolated region of the seven kingdoms after the Iron Islands, so it's natural they on the one hand didn't have so many nobles with connections and sympathies with the crown, and on the other hand they didn't fear the crown because it was a distant threat. The Vale and the Stormlands on the other hand directly border Targaryan lands, and thus rebelling is an immediate threat.

He didn't fight to unite the 7 kingdoms, they were still split just as much. He burned millions of people to death with his dragons so he could rule over everyone he thought was underneath him.

Sort of like Rurik in real life and the origin story of modern Russia - a bad@ss warrior from far across the sea conquers a foreign land with an army of conscripts. He's so successful he unites a land for the first time previously divided by interfighting tribes and hordes. His dynasty, the Rurikids, lasts for nearly 1000 years shaping the nations that would become modern Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. At some point along the way they dropped their native viking culture and become Russified. From underdog to gods among men, the entire dynasty ends suddenly at the hands of the Mad king, Ivan the Terrible, who kills his only heir and decimates his own dynasty through paranoia. Following this a succession war with many pretender kings rages for years before a new King wins against all, the first Romanov King. I know many dynastic stories are the same but I always found it interesting.

To be fair Robert is still a descendant of Aegon via his Targaryen grandmother, but yeah Robert is not really a Targaryen.

@Mark Walsh: No. It is not caused by some right to enforce marriage. They ask for their daughter/sister to see if she is allright, or not. They have not yet forbidden any new marriage. All they do is defend the woman, their family member. There are no phones, they cannot check any other way but go and ask. Instead of summoning his son, and find out the truth, the mad king kills the warden of the north and his son. Moreover he threatens to kill the new Lord Stark and his planned brother in law, the lord Baratheon. Their "adopted" father, the lord of the Vale, and their father in law, the lord of the Riverlands, come to their aid. It is all the mad king's fault. The mad king killed the warden of the north, and ordered the arrest of the new lord Stark, instead of handing out justice. You do not kill people for asking about their daughter/sister.
