As a book reader, Oberyn's death on the show broke me all over again. I knew he was gonna die like this from episode 1, and i still let myself like his character... what a fucking mistake. There is something horrible different about reading a death, and wathching it live... Im angrier than when i read the Red Wedding, at least i saw that comming... somewhat.

same here dude, i think when we read it we kinda block some of the things that are written like: "the mountain smashed his skull" and we're like : "nah, he just died and it wasn't humiliating at all"

I cannot believe how bad they made the death of Oberyn I wish George R R Martin could have let him live a bit longer was such a good character and a great fighter. So horrible but atleast he gets a revenge.....

He could've lived longer to seek revenge on others, but Martin designed Oberyn to fulfill his purpose and his purpose was fulfilled. It's like letting something go on a high note for its own good. But we're not done with the Martells just yet ;)

LOL @ the people who still haven't figured out that martin is certainly not afraid to kill off beloved characters. That is one of the things that make this show so amazing. They're never afraid to have the good guy lose. I'm normally someone whose brain spins 1 million RPM when watching any show or movie & in most, I predict close enough what's going to happen before it even happens....but what an amazing show is in my book is when I cannot possibly do that. Going into the fight scene , in any normal show I would think "They certainly wont kill off a character as loved as Tyrion......not to mention Obryen..."....but then I think back to The red wedding & also Ned's beheading so then I'm like "but then again, it's the GOT I'm watching here....anyone can die"........but regardless of that.....even for the thinking-watcher like myself....while watching the show, they catch you by surprise because all the way until near the end they keep up this sense of hope that you simply can't ignore......Priceless entertainment in my opinion. Especially when compared to all of the shows & movies these days that do all of the thinking for you. I'm only on the 2nd book so not sure if Tyrion is going to die or not....but along with others, I hope not.

The most chilling moment of the episode for me, is not Oberyn's death, but Ellaria's bloodcurdling scream afterwards - makes you think how YOU would react to someone you love having their head smashed to a pulp in front of you. Well played. And congrats to Pedro Pascal for making a character come to life with such force. While not insignificant (politically), Oberyn is a relatively minor character in the book, and becoming an instant fan-favourite right alongside Tyrion is no mean feat.

On a less sad note, did anyone laugh together with Arya when she and the hound discovered that Lysa had died? I could literally see Maisie (just purely enjoying the moment) in that scene. I absolutely loved Oberyn's fight. It reminded me in a way of Inigo Montoya's duel with the Six Fingered Man in the Princess Bride, how his catchphrase became more than just his catchphrase. It was his mantra, the one thing that kept him going during the long years he trained and waited for the right moment.

Bronn actually predicted this fight perfectly to Tyrion last episode in his cell. He told Tyrion, tire the big guy out, get him off his feet some how, but One False Step, and poof.... Oberyn got too cocky and could have ended it the fight. Tyrions advice on wearing a helmet made sense since Oberyn got his head exploded by the Mountain. I knew he was going to die, but not that way. Maybe Oberyns brother and the Dornes gets revenge on Cersei in the future. George needs to get writing.

This episode is chocked FULL of the most awesome and profound dialogue sequences; Like, Baelish talking to little Robyn about not being so afraid. And Sansa and Robyn's little talk during and after building Winterfell out of snow. And Jon and his friends talking about the Wildlings attacking Mole's Town. And Grey Worm apologizing to Missandei for watching her bathe in the river. Then there's the Roose/Ramsey conversation, when he names him his true-born son. And Reek becoming Theon again to take Moat Cailin back by manipulating the Ironborn. And Arya hysterically laughing at the Hound because her Aunt Lysa died lol and even the back and forth Jaime and Tyrion had in his cell about their beetle-smashing cousin, Orsyn Lannister. But, the two most important conversation scenes are; The emotionally epic scene where Sansa defends Littlefinger, And the brutally moving scene of Daenerys banishing Ser Jorah. Even if it didn't include the EPIC Mountain vs. Oberyn battle at the end, it would still stand out above other episodes because there's so many compelling and dramatic scenes all in this ONE episode. It's almost difficult to believe they were able to cram it all in lol it's a testament to the fact that season 4 is just as good, if not better, as season 3. And arguably better than all the previous Game of Thrones seasons up to that point.

For all the people complaining at Tyrions's reaction, I thought it was a perfect reaction he was just in plain shock, The Mountain had been stabbed and basically defeated and then 30 seconds later he realises his champion has been killed and he knows what's coming and he knows his father will get what he wants and Circe and for once he has no tricks up his sleeve and no one that can help him.

Spider58x you should have realised by now (if you have watched the show carefully and even more if you have read the books), that for all the power hunger, scheming and fights of men it is really love/passion that has set almost every single event in motion: women are central and have the power to make things right or to make everything go to hell; they are the best triggers...alliances, disputes, resentments, murders,betrayals, wars have been fought for, caused or committed by women in ASOIAF.

It's awesome how even after just BARELY dodging the bullet to the head TWICE (Stannis Baratheon, Robb Stark), Tywin and Cersei (the only really power-hungry Lannisters) are never more freaked out than when the Red Viper points to Tywin and screams "Who gave the order!" Even without an army one crazy badass on his own seriously threatens their whole dynasty. Their enemies are definitely getting closer...

And a huge LOL for Benioff for saying about the poison on the spear in the video, which the show didn't show haha. I guess they must have shot Tyrion or someone saying something about Oberyn poisoning his spears, but then it got cut out... But it will be mentioned for sure in the next or 10th episode.

He's talking about what Benioff says that wasn't made clear in tonights episode. It's one of the reasons that Oberyn is cocky. It is not said nor implied during the episode but he makes it clear here. I'm talking about the poisoning.

I was looking for a behind the scenes video of the Viper v Mountain fight, but this works too. Also how refreshing is it to see videos from back when D&D were actually competent at making this show? How the mighty have fallen.

They're gonna start making these 60 minutes long. The showrunners seem good for it. "Hodor only feels safe when he's with Bran, although his inner turmoil about being warged into doesn't dissipate. Hodor wants to be of service, to fit into some social group, due to his basic mammalian psychology, despite his retardation. Hodor says 'hodor' but each iteration of 'Hodor' has its own unique resonance based on context..."

The Mountain isn't that good as a fighter, I think many fighters can defeat him easily. He's just brute strength, and if he catches you, you're dead. If you can avoid his attack like Oberyn was doing, he's nothing. Skills win you a fight, strength doesn't. Although overconfidence makes you lose aswell :P

I have to be honest, the final scene's ending made me feel very nauseous, when I saw Oberyn's head explode my stomach just churned, I still feel like throwing up if I'm honest. I have to say I might have taken his death "better" if it weren't for those haunting screams he made before dying, now I feel a horrible sadness that I just can't seem to get over, I was spoiled the Red Wedding whilst still watching Season 1 by some book spoiler troll, so I reason with myself that it's because I had so long to come to terms with their deaths that I didn't have the same reaction to Oberyn dying, in which I felt devastated.(yet another thing that a spoiler troll spoiled for me). RIP Red Viper you may have died in the process but you still got your revenge. Also The Mountain= OP as fuck.....

One of the reasons i love game if thrones is that its so grounded in reality. No one deserves to live or die, much like in reality. Sometimes the "bad guy" is gonna be poisoned at his wedding, sometimes the "good guy" dies a Terri left death... Sometimes the innocent ones are slaughtered. This is not a story of justice or vengeance. Superman does not save the day always. All Men Must Die.

One of the big reasons Dany exiles Jorah in the books is because he undermines her authority. By making Jorah not make pretty obvious references to loving her and not making some moves on her it seems less human. And then there's fucking Barristan who will begin his command of "I am but a simple knight" advice.

Sarah R. I guess they thought it would fit better to wait till her big moment when she saves LF to save herself since she didn't know anything about the Vale Lords and suggests that LF wants her. It puts a visual transformation on her to match her emotional one. At least that's a good guess, lol.
@ArticWS
@ArticWS 10 жыл бұрын
Sarah R. In the show, she hide her hair entering into the Vale, as per Littlefinger's suggestion. Then, at the Eyrie, Lysa implies she doesn't let anyone go up there anymore; they are alone -servants notwithstanding, one would assume. Now that they are going to tour the Vale, she does need to disguise herself. As you said, it connects with her transformation, but it also makes tactical sense in the show.
@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive

+Luka Nieto It was actually Lysa who suggested to Sansa to dye her hair. She said it right after mentioning Sansa looks too much like Cat, so I took it as not her being wary of Sansa being identified but her her trepidation of Sansa being more attractive and a possible temptation for Petyr. I thought it was ridiculous that she ended up dying her hair regardless and am annoyed by some fans who complain that she hadn't dyed her hair on the show yet because auburn hair = definitive proof of Tully lineage. (What's a spy going to do to confirm this? Take a picture, compare it with on Sansa's Facebook page before showing Varys and/or Cersei?) Her hair color being black wasn't even mentioned by this time in aSOS.

I already read the books and knew what was going to happen between the mountain and the viper. He went "princess bride" during that whole fight. I was waiting for him to say "you killed my sister, prepare to die" lol but his death was thew most grotesque thing I've seen on television, that's something you would see on Hannibal. And the look that Sansa gave Petyr was hilarious. And its nice to see her story arc changing. "...you think you know what I wait?" She just looks at him like, I think we both know exactly what you what. Don't b.s. Great episode!!!!
