We didn’t have a crunch on Just Cause 4. The experience making the game was good but at the same time there was a lot we wanted to do that didn’t get done because we tried to avoid crunch. Better planning can help with crunch and of course hiring more help. The problem is that once you have more people suddenly features you didn’t think you’d get to are attainable with a little over time and then suddenly you have crunch. At least that has been the experience I’ve had at some studios. Feature creep can be a major issue as well as just nailing down a feature you thought was fine until something/someone else comes in and wrecks it. Outsourcing alone can be problematic, as you generally have to clean up content from outsource teams which can slow down production if you can’t afford to expand the team and then bam! You’re scrambling to catch up so : crunch. It’s really tough to get around.

Just wanted to say, I really appreciate that Justin is one of the few people I've seen mentioning real issues and asking relevant questions in the subject of crunch. It's easy to join a bandwagon either way, but the reality is that while crunch is indeed a real problem, like many other problems the solution is not as simple and clear cut as those not in the industry make it out to be. I personally think that the gaming industry is in a bubble of sorts that eventually will burst, something will have to give. Games will need to be either shorter, more expensive, take longer to make or fewer games made, monetize in different ways, or maybe just not exist any more as we expect them. The current path is not sustainable in the long run IMO. Advances in technology alone are not enough.

I don’t agree with raising the prices of games to negate the developer crunch issue. Surely crunch would just continue despite the price increase and consumers shouldn’t be made to suffer for a games development problem that’s not a fault of their own?
@Nates5212
@Nates5212 2 жыл бұрын
Game development is expensive, and getting more and more expensive as studio sizes grow and game complexity scales. Taking in account inflation, and these other aspects of development, if we want to see games be successful and profitable, and remain as beautiful and complex as they continue to be, I think a rise in prices makes sense. Right now studios are combating this with the tight rope act of getting their profits from micro transactions without making the audience angry, such as cosmetic items and extensions to game content. As for crunch, if a companies last game was higher price than say $60, and people bought that game, they’d have more cash to take longer to make the next game.
@IronBurden
@IronBurden 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nates5212 I can understand where you're coming from... trying to support developers by paying more. But ultimately, paying more money for games doesn't solve the problems you list. All you do is line the pockets of the suits in the c-suite. Games are costing more to develop, but they are also increasing in available customer-base, increasing revenue reach. Phones, tablets, PCs, consoles, cloud, all with a click of a button to complete a transaction instantly. Publishers have already sunk their teeth in monetization models with microtransactions, dlcs, battle passes, deluxe editions, directors cuts, and now "next gen upgrades" for $10. It will keep getting pushed to see how much consumers will tolerate before sales start to slow. Now it's a $20 upgrade fee to get Horizon Forbidden West with dual entitlement for PS4 and PS5 ($80 vs $60). We've seen it time and time again. Publishers will push to monetize more and more, hoping that customers continue to feel justified in their increased expenditure.
@Nates5212
@Nates5212 2 жыл бұрын
@@IronBurden yeah I can see how the suits are really the ones gaining, but I just don’t see how $60 is sustainable after closing in on 20 years at that price, with inflation $60 in 2006 is $80 now. I know greed gets in the way, but don’t you think part of the push for all these extra sources of income from a single game with a single purchase entry fee are in response to $60 not having the same buying power as it did in 2006? Edit: although maybe it is too late to raise the price now, because executives will charge $70-$80 and then still keep all the extra crap as additional purchases (with the exception being Sony has already done that, and their first party games usually aren’t riddled with too much extra nonsense battle passes and cosmetic dlc). Maybe deluxe editions and upgrades are a better option for the consumer, given there’s a choice between the $60 version or the $80 version.
@IronBurden
@IronBurden 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nates5212 I agree with your input. Forgive my lack of exact numbers, but I believe games were $40 or $50 in the 2000s. Prices have increased recently (through clever means as we mentioned: dlc, passes, cosmetics, editions).The $10 increase from 60 to 70 is just gravy on top. At the end of the day though, I recognize that I can't fight the tide. Some people will just perceive that cost as justified and that's okay. Just realize that the price increase doesn't go towards fixing the problem for developers. It's the equivalent of paying more for a consumer product from a huge company ... Hoping it'll increase the quality of life / working conditions for someone in the assembly line. The game development industry needs a ground-up culture shift to fix crunch issues.

AAA games aren't getting any smaller or less detailed, and each new release will just require more and more man hours to complete. Just as in any other industry that came before, western game devs are increasingly becoming less cost-effective when compared to their Chinese, South Korean or Indian counterparts, and dev work will increasingly be farmed out to those latter workers, who, as an added bonus to the big gaming corporations, won't complain about crunch as much either. For the same reason foreign gaming companies will become more competitive too. So as trends go I think we can expect bigger globalized dev teams, more western indie studios, games to still cost $60 for the forseeable future... and Genshin Impact 4 to be relased before Elder Scrolls VII.

Tina, great job as always. Tech issues aren't on you. Alex is a great addition to the cast, I hope she gets to be on more. Justin, As someone who loves & owns the Midnight Suns comics, loves the rebooted X-com series, and loves Slay the Spire, like you, Midnight Suns is very Slay the Spire as in each round you get 6 cards from your deck dealt in random order, and you have to make those cards work as best as possible, and hope that you get good draws against tough enemies. You also get to upgrade cards through the course of the game, like Slay. Though it is combined with the movement, and tactics of X-com. Sam, you didn't play Lords of Shadow (thus how you don't know Patrick Stewart is in it), so no, it's not a bad Castlevania game. The 1st Lords of Shadow game is actually great, (both games, and the smaller SIdescrolling Castlevania game based in the Lords of Shadow story are all backwards compatible on xbox series X/S). The 2nd game isn't as good as the 1st, made it more of a vampire powered brawler with some bad stealth sections, but it still an average to slightly above average game. All 3 games often go on sale on xbox live, so I would recommend all of you giving it a shot if you have time. Especially the 1st game, as it does a really good job in it's storytelling, and has some classic Castlevania elements.
@JungleOfMeat

Tech issues? She speaks way too much. Has no idea how 20 questions works despite the fact she's played it no end of times. Interrupts way too much. Doesn't let the others speak most of the time. It was a right train wreck. "Let me see if it's on switch or not" googles it for 5 minutes and just doesn't bother answering. It's not what her "fans" want to hear but it's the truth. Stop telling someone they've done a great job when they clearly haven't.
@thefearmakerlive
@thefearmakerlive 2 жыл бұрын
What are you writing about? The mic problems and the starting and stopping of talking was clearly a tech issue. And no, no one is a "fan" of hers, nor has to be one to admit she did a great job. As far as talking too much, of course she doesn't talk too much, there's no thing. And if the long diatribes that Sam and sometimes Justin go on, isn't considered talking too much, then Tina never talks too much. And to state that the host of a show where people are having conversations, where their opinion is also part of the conversation, is "talking too much", when everyone clearly gets the time to say what they want, is asinine. On to the 20 questions, so Daemon has never had to look up info or not come back to stuff that was brought up? Of course he had. You're trying to make issues where there are none. And it's ridiculous people like you that makes me hope that Tina does have lots of fans to counteract the ridiculousness you wrote about someone on a weekly, casual talk show about video games. Do better.

I'm not sure why 'crunch' is ever discussed. The reality is gamers don't care! No more than any other consumer cares about the work conditions and pay of the people who make clothes or grow, pick, package the food they eat!? Consumers are simply the embodment of humanity's selfish nature. Sure, ask any gamer, anyone for that matter, if 'crunch' is unfair to employees and every will agree in principle and publically express outrage at it. Let's be honest, it's pretty much a false concern. All gamers care about is the quality of the games they purchase. Worse still, some gamers will whine and complain if a game takes too long to produce, or is delayed. The problem is gaming is now big business, and actually gaming's popularity is the worse thing that happened to it. It's completely dominated by corporations. While every business exists for profit, corporations take it to a whole different level. It's not simply about profit, but an 'accountant'-set profit, specifically with investors in mind. It's not good enough that a profit is made, if a huge profit isn't made then the product's considered a failure and in gaming that either means the death of a franchise, or the closure of a studio by its overlord publisher! The gaming industry, at the AAA level, has ridiculously backed itself into a corner. As it has desperately seeked the highest possible sales it didn't take the suits that run these businesses much effort to understand that that big and complex, and importantly extremely pretty graphics all but guarantee massive interest and often translate to large sales. Every year or two the AAA type game sets a new, higher standard. The cost of which is the requirement of massive teams that require multiple years of production. Crunch is extremely poor management and a lack of respect for its workers mandated by the corporation's hunger for profit at the demand of its overpaid executives and money-obsessed investors. The end result is that rather than produce a realistic size/quality of game or a realistic deadline forcing the workers to 'crunch'. And corporations don't stop at a lack of respect for its workers, they spread it to gamers too as games are shipped incomplete or unfinished and require months of multiple patches. We all know this. And if we're honest; we don't care, certainly not enough to do anything. And yes, that includes games media too. Corporations excel at taking advantage of workers. And not only is everyone accepting of this, governments get in on the love for corporation attitude by allowing them to pay lower taxes! It's such a ridiculous situation I honestly don't understand the point of discussion when hard action and genuine commitment is what's required. We're all just a bunch of slaves to corporations. And if anyone genuinely cares about how any treat their workers, there are far, far worse corporations in other industries. And yet, here we are, buying cheap everything we can consume with no care or thought for why and how everything is so affordable and convenient.
@numnuts44
@numnuts44 2 жыл бұрын
Very well said. This is why it sinks my heart to hear people suggest higher prices when as you quite rightly point out hard action is needed, I don't see offering more money in the hope the overlords have mercy on their staff as the solution.

@quantumjet253
@quantumjet253 2 жыл бұрын
@@numnuts44 I didn't specifically mention 'prices', as I think that's a whole different subject. And I don't think the price of a game is directly related to the subject of crunch, although I think the pricing of games is as poorly managed as the rest of the industry, and is in part why the industry has introduced various after-sales profit schemes. Some specifically take advantage of the popularity of a game of course, while others are an attempt to justify the time and manpower required to create the product. Crunch is essentially the result of extremely poor management. Every business produces a product or service, at a cost, and within a deadline. Normal, sensibly run, intelligently managed businesses price their product or service and set their deadline to match the time required to complete its work within the limits of its manpower. I think the solution is incredibly simple but the 'suits' that have essentially made 'crunch' part of the gaming industry have little reason to remove it, and certainly no enthusiasm as it amounts to increased profit. Part of the problem is the industry's insistence on desperate marketing; in terms of communicating to its customers. I presume announcing a game years prior to release, drip feeding information and videos (irrespective of how inaccurate they represent the final product) throughout the game's production and setting release dates based on hope rather logic, to the industry, equate to higher sales. As little knowledge of game production as most of us have as gamers we're all aware that once 'new' production stops on a game it takes essentially an unknown period of time to 'polish' the game and make it fit for sale. It seems rather obvious that the period of 'polish' is given far too little time, and both employee and customer dedication are taken extreme advantage of. It's not difficult to resolve. Again any business could promise unrealistic deadlines, constantly feed customers with a running commentary on its work, and take on larger projects than it can handle. 'Crunch culture' isn't the big issue with the gaming industry it's 'Poor management culture' that is at the heart of all of its problems. In short I think games can be announced ahead of time, but only when very close to the period of 'polish', and only then should anything be shown or communicated in any detail (yeah, sorry gaming media, f-you, you'll have discuss current games rather than the future!). The release date shouldn't be made public until work has started on 'polish', and it's much easier to predict how much time is required. That's not to say a game shouldn't receive 'patches' but these should be far more rare, and far less required than they currently are. If investors, the real overlords of corporations, demand a specific deadline, then the industry needs management with the intelligence and experience to understand when 'new' production has to stop on a game in order to allow give the team time to 'polish' and finish the game for public release.

Not a fan of remakes, played the Destroy All Humans remake recently, while it was fun to revisit that game, I probably would've had as much fun playing the original

Your right no one wants to hear about prices of video games going up particularly when $60 is already too high IMO. Companies need to start looking at a subscription model like gamepass and up the price of that monthly maybe to $15 to accommodate. Also you mentioned marketing budget. That is often, similar to movies almost double again what the cost of the product was. That’s ridiculous and they could cut back there for sure. And “crunch” isn’t an inherently bad thing. These employees are not forced to work at the company and as such they should look for work at another studio that is not making do hours they don’t feel comfortable with. They would all be contracted and have to sign documents saying they are happy with it anyway so it’s all much ado about nothing
@SkeeLoGreene
@SkeeLoGreene 2 жыл бұрын
Someone can sign a contract and still be abused in terms of labor requested or hours worked. We don' t know exactly what these devs are told when they are hired onto these massive projects. While I agree that 60 bucks is a lot, and now asking for 70 is REALLY pushing it, Justin isn't wrong when he's concerned about a point where the damn will break.

@@SkeeLoGreene Also no one will address this as generally games journalists and outlets are left leaning and generally socialist/anti-capitalist. But we live in a corporate world, and the biggest and most hi tech games are made by corporations who are only interested in money. They arent gonna allow deadlines to be pushed, and they arent gonna get more people in to work on them. Lets just say that these devs are completely clueless about the industry, they certainly now after seeing the negative "crunch" headlines the last few years what their job is gonna look like. They can certainly find a new career or maybe start their own studio and run it how they want

I think Crunch isn't always a bad thing. People keep hopping on the hate bandwagon when all industries work Crunch aka Overtime. Even ign has crunch so let's not act like this is impossible to not do.

I don't know about others but i am not a huge fan of the gameplay video rolling for such a long period and the hosts being down in the corner. Kind of gave me motion sickness for TLoU. It works best when its for a new announcement and not something we've all seen. Otherwise great show as always!

Omg so tired about the "crunch" talk. Every industry especially IT its expected that salary employees work over 40 hours a week without overtime pay. This is a corporate America discussion. The videogame industry is not in a silo regarding "crunch".

Thank you! I work IT in a datacenter and everybody or every group has a season every so often that is crunch time. I feel like people are being to sensitive and acting like "snowflakes". "I had to work 50 to 60 hrs at my awesome job with a bunch of awesome people but we only got paid for 40 hrs" booo hooo. Grow up!

I agree with you both that most industries have their version of crunch, but there are a lot of developers out there whose stories are pretty harrowing. 100 hr work weeks, months on end, is the worst I’ve ever heard.

Finally the correct answer. Video game industry crunch is not unique at all. Here's another example: audit season for CPAs. 70+ hour weeks plus travel for several months straight and it's just how it goes. It's a United States discussion not a specific industry discussion

Well no technically you can deal with crunch the problem is if you deal with crunch appropriately then you can’t have release dates and nobody really wants to get rid of the concept of a set release date. Gamers don’t want to get rid of it because they want to know what is this game coming companies don’t want to get rid of it because they want to be able to tell investors who is when you can expect to see some money come in. If you actually greenlight a game and said it will be finished when it’s finished and then sit work standards theoretically you don’t know when that game will be done because you don’t know what complications will arise. Now it’s best for a healthy workforce if you did that but then you have upset gamers and upset investors. With that being said if we are truly for eliminating crunch like we claim we are then you have to stand behind your game designers and you have to say hey 40 hour work week once you’ve worked your 40 hours go home will pick up where we left off Monday. When the game is done it will be done until then everybody has to wait. Now let’s see how many people are willing to truly get behind that idea truly supporting the worker.

There’s also issues like team members leaving during development and new people having to come in and figure out their code to continue development and things like that can lead to crunch. It’s not an easy thing to avoid but it can happen.

How about looking at all the profits and start sharing the wealth. The programmers, artists and contract workers get shuffled every game so there is no stability in this business unless you're in the corporate area. There you get bonuses in the range of millions and the people who actually make the game and pour there blood sweat and tears into a game they get the bare minimum. Not singling out Naughty Dog or anyone at Sony but the industry itself needs to start showing some God damn empathy for the people who helped put thee on the top

The 2002 RE film had a $33 million budget and felt low budget at the time and feels even worst now. The RE reboot has aparantly a $40 million budget. How can it do justice to the scope and story of RE 1 & 2 games? Accounting for inflation the 2002 film has a higher budget 🤦

games don’t need to be more than $60 in an industry that is making more money than any other. AI and tech won’t help with crunch because crunch is a result of GREED not time. If tech and AI cut development time in half then the devs will be crunching anyway to get the game out even sooner. then on to the next game that will get crunched.
