The price rises aren't even the whole picture. Factoring in shrinkflation of the combat patrols, and increase in number of models required to make up a 2000pt army, the actual price of warhammer is astronomically higher

Your right 5 man squads dropping to 3 mini's per box, combat patrols sneakily becoming less and less for your money, more and more character tax and price hike after price hike. What a joke GW has become!

...meanwhile in One Page Rules you only need two handfulls of minis to make up a full 2000pt army. AND it's alternating moves like in chess. It's seriously the best system there is right now and i can't fathom why more people aren't using it. It's free! It will cost you zero £$€0 to build an army list on their webpage.

Been a pain just trying to make a 1k point Sisters of Battle list. Got to 980 and since all the buffs now the list is 820 so that's another $60 or so to try and get back to where it was before if I tried to buy from GW.

I'm a 52 year old bloke, who's been buying from GW from almost the beginning , starting as a child with WFB 2nd. I love the hobby and everything that goes with it , but yes Mister Northern Exile, this is the moment for me. I have the cash, but paying ridiculous prices to a company that appears to hold nothing but contempt towards those who love their products the most is beginning to feel like masochism. Recent events have merely confirmed it. I won't be stepping inside a GW again. On a lighter note just want to say how much I enjoy what you do. Been listening for years now, excellent stuff and a breath of fresh air. Keep up the good work. Cheers.

I'm still a little shocked by this price increase, which turns out to be quite significant and far from the 3-5% promised. There are 20 year old kits that have doubled their price, the price of books and codices have also doubled and the bottom line is that relatively new figurines can no longer be playable from one edition to the next. I am disgusted with their business practices. There are people interested in the Warhammer universe, gaming, painting but who don't take the plunge to purchase because it's too expensive. And here I'm talking about adults who work and earn a relatively good living. For my part, I stop changing versions, repurchasing books and codexes for the price of a week's vacation. The miniatures are great, I will finish a collection or two that I started but I think the breaking point has been reached for me. On the other hand, that means that we are cutting ourselves off from the base of players who play regularly in clubs, because they will continue to follow fashion and change everything with each version. How sad.

10th Edition when the codexes started dropping was probs the breaking point for me, you play any space marines that aren't Dark/Blood angels, Space Wolves or Black templars you may as well have been told to ram your models up yer arse. They care more about competitive than narrative, the game is designed for like 5-10% of the player base and they've made this clear with the recent additions to their balance team. I've gotten into one page rules plus 3D printing and its been a blast.

Hi North. I actually am a GW shareholder and bought £1k in stock in 2014. With dividend reinvested and a £500 injection during the lockdowns when there price plummeted. My investment is now worth £5k. I'm not saying this to brag but it's by far the best investment I made. I too am concerned about their practices and were it not for having a job would like to attend an AGM to ask the board of directors where they see the company in 10 years, and why they think with starter boxes reaching £200 that grassroots customers wouldn't be scared off. I very rarely buy stuff now. But I just can't justify spending upward of £60 on a single mid range tank kit. And I'm a solid baked in plastic crack addict. Is anyone else a shareholder? Mabey we should all attend their AGM and give them a piece of our mind!

@@Grintendo it's hard to say because they are automatically reinvested and GW increase the payout each year. When I first invested it was about £30 a year. But now I get about £75 a year. I only own a few more shares than when I started because they are at about £99 a share these days so it takes 3 years to accrue 2 via divided reinvestment. When I bought them I think it was about £30 per share.

You underestimate the purchasing power of whales. I once knew a fella who put around 15.000€ a year into some kind of luck based mobile game. Something star wars related I think. He earned enough money to sustain this for a few years, so it didn't hurt him much if at all. GW has a lot of whales, don't get me wrong. Whales are obviously not the main audience of GW (yet), but these people are willing to put enough money into this hobby to make people like us look like toddlers spending their pocket change on a space marine box.

They've been doing this for yeeeeeeeeeeears. I started GW back in the rogue trader days. I'd say that 2nd and 5th were my favourites. I quit at the beginning of 8th. I remember when GW actually had sale days! Yup that's right, I said sale! They'd have a red dot day. Any product which had a red dot sticker on it was discounted. And this was at a time when a schoolboy like me could save a couple of weeks pocket money and buy a tactical or terminator squad. No issues. I'm now a farther of three, and I would never fund my kids into getting into GW. It's poor value for money as a parent. You dont know if your kid will fully embrace the hobby or if it'll be a fad. I'd rather pay out for a playstation or xbox over Warhammer. I think there's less long time players entering the hobby nowadays, and GW has to cover the loss of unit sales by these above inflation yearly price increases. They have share holders to appease. They are going to eventually price themselves out of the market. Unless they make the hobby more affordable for parents and kids who rely on pocket money.

I'd been invested in Heresy for a couple of years and built a substantial army but didn't even play a single game of it. I'd also bought a "Perturabo" off of Etsy for £20 and he was more Perturabo looking than the official Perturabo miniature. I've been spending progressively on those kits, and the odd 1990s craftworld eldar sculpts here and there. But i haven't bought anything retail from them for years now. And evwey timw rhey bring out a kit, etc that I am tempted to buy I see yet another price hike, etc. And I am reminded why I dont buy anything more from them. I was in the hobby from 1995-2022. I still buy miniatures, and I still assemble and paint them. But I no longer are chained to GW. Personally, I am happier for it. With the way the prices are now... it just makes me feel sorry for anyone trying to buy into it these days. Its frustrating to see a company like GW who have grown into a household name, failing at something ANY business student could tell you is Business 101. Alienating customers is literally OPPOSITE to every marketing technique I learnt at Uni. Yes 'target' audiences but never actively exclude anyone because inclusion is a businesses best friend. More customers > more sales > more money > more product > ect ect. GW has unfortunately dug itself into a hole after the success of the pandemic and they are to dumb to accept that that stint was a fluke. They should have invested the money, up dated their business model (3D printing for example) and set themselves up for another 30yrs of sustainability. Its a shame they are not that smart. Instead they are raising profits and putting another nail in the GW coffin. Its a rookie move and ya hate to see it.

the biggest problem the hobby, as a whole, has is IF GW does hit critical mass, how much of the people that are being squeezed out turn to another hobby or just call it a bad deal and leave the hobby entirely without looking outside the bubble, current conversion rates would be interesting to see. The straw for me was after finishing my imperial guard army and looking at another one to start and realizing just how much the cost would be and something in my head saying "no, that's enough" the most ive bought lately was the 30k basilisk for my 40k guard. And ive little interest in investing in another system or army from them.

10:50 That's straight up not true. New kits are being sold within minutes and WH is becoming more and more mainstream. None of these things would be happening if GW were bleeding customers. The only reason GW is increasing prices is because they know they can get away with it. GW doesn't need any more new customers when they are failing to satisfy even the current demand.

Quite a few of us were forced out of the company for not being robots, That put me off the company and I didn't play for years , I still collected some models though. I tried to get back into playing a few years back but the prices stopped me in my tracks . Now I play other TTWG and I enjoy it without the toxicity and money grabbing that GW are synonymous for.

I think the last thing I bought was the Indomitus box, and I struggled to justify it at the time as it was well pricey. But that was 4 years ago and things are much worse now. I don't think I'll get anything else from them going forward. I don't like the direction they've been going with the minis anyway. They seem to be obsessed with increasing details over character with little thought given to the overall aestetic of the figure. It becomes a chore to paint when the entire surface of the model is RAMMED with detail upon detail upon extraneous detail. They'll be sculpting writing onto the scrolls next.

I find it odd that the paints aren't going up given the smaller margins and proportionally the prices to produce have gone up more. I can see a 2-3% increase in cost on their end for the production of the paints yet the stuff that cost no less then 1% in increase is getting 3-5% at a time when people can't affor it. God I wish Bandai would make a Gundam TTWG.

I discovered OPR, and since then have been fielding armies that are a mix of my old GW minis, some Warmachine stuff, and Legion. I've also been playing more Legion with my hobby group, as we're older (we all got into 40K with RT), and have more responsibilities and such. Legion requires less minis, they're a decent build quality, and the rules are simple enough to get a game flowing quickly. I'm not sure any of us will return to 40K, but we might buy a particularly nice sculpt as a hobby challenge every now and then. The straw for most of us was the new AdMech Codex, which only a couple of the guys played, but got really boring for us all to play against and required too much time investment to make an army list.

I'd also like to point out that when I started gaming - it was because I'd read books from the '60s (and earlier, like HG Wells') about historical gaming. 40K was NOT my introduction to gaming, except in the sense of first play. I got into it reluctantly, because it was all there was in the store and I wanted to play *something.* (And even then, I leaned towards historical tropes, like Imperial Guard, which were among the things that attracted me most to Warhammer.) Twenty-five years later ...? I'd walk into the store and discover Warlord Games (founded, rules written and minis made by the best of ex-GW employees). I'd have gotten into Black Powder, or at least bought Perry historicals and started playing the '60s classic rules I'd found and was eager to play. And I might never have noticed GW at all. The crazy thing is that in 1999, $70 for the 3rd edition box set was a lot of money for me - and I never actually bought it. Last year, GW made the same minis (but only the figures - not the book, terrain or accessories) available for $100. I can afford it now, but I want the damn 3rd Edition set back, and that would at least double the price.

It's sad to see so many people being pushed out of this amazing hobby due to one bad decision by GW after another. I got priced out back in 5th and tried to come back in late 9th and was beyond stunned to see the cost of models (most the exact same sculpts almost a decade old). 3D printing is what brought me back into the hobby and I'm already 4 armies deep and beginnings of others. With another price increase incoming I really can't see 40k having a bright future. Glad to hear you've changed your opinion on 3D sculpts, there are some insanely talented people out there making better models than GW for a fraction of the price
@JBurdoo
@JBurdoo 3 ай бұрын
Honestly, the moment Imperial Guard hit 35 bucks a box for ten minis (meaning thrice the price I paid in the late '90s at 23 bucks for twenty), I gave up caring about the prices. I play historicals now, I read Black Library and rules online, and on the rare occasions I buy GW stuff it's the cheap starter sets and board games (20 gaunts for 40 bucks, plus a 30-dollar board into the bargain, is cheaper than they've been since the early '90s). Even in historicals, I mostly build paper figures and terrain these days. When I play 40K at all, it's 3rd or 4th edition. I like the game as it was decades ago, and I have plenty of minis. The first historical game I bought - one of the ones that got me into the hobby - was last updated in 1999. I still have the rulebook I bought then, and it is still good, and the game is still the most popular in its genre so it's easy to find players in any group or convention. If GW had done the same thing, we'd still be in 3rd edition... which I wouldn't mind. It might be just because they were the rules when I started, but I liked and would happily stick with 3rd/4th edition 40K or 5th/6th edition Fantasy, with occasional new minis.

Well, my reprinters are going to be happy. Combine this with shrinkflation on boxes, pointsflation on armies and it’s a lot more than 3-5%. Other model companies are sucking up the costs, GW aren’t raising prices for inflation, they’re raising them so they can keep pushing their maximum threshold. They’re making bigger profits each year so inflation is not hurting them. They do not pay their staff these huge price rises either, so don’t go thinking it’s for the greater good. One of the companies I work for has had to raise prices, but they also know they can’t raise them to match inflation and so have to eat some costs.

Literally lowering barrier to entry, making the app less abrasive to the customer base, would increase overall sales. More people invested, more people who buy more official products that could compete with third party. A Veblen good is a type of luxury good, named after American economist Thorstein Veblen, for which the demand increases as the price increases, in apparent contradiction of the law of demand, resulting in an upward-sloping demand curve. The higher prices of Veblen goods may make them desirable as a status symbol in the practices of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous leisure. A product may be a Veblen good because it is a positional good, something few others can own. Makes me wonder if that’s their aim

My personal theory is that Games Workshop, in its incompetence, intends to diversify to obtain its profits from books, series, video games, movies, and basically anything other than selling miniatures. They will gradually abandon the sale of models until it becomes only a complement to the universe they promote. Players of tabletop games will become a marginal part of their profits, or at least that is their plan.

I *want* to be able to get the GW models that tickle my fancy, but I was priced out even before joining the hobby. Plus GW being very threat happy with their IP. Currently it makes me feel bad actually wanting to buy an occasional official model. The justification for their price rise being inflation is a strange one(and not the first time). They only charge what they think people will pay. But their warchest is amassed from people's disposable income. If disposable income drops in general, so should the price of luxury goods, until they're a net loss and they disappear from the market (or become a high luxury). They're treating their products like necessities. Its as if they're managed by a supermarket CEO.

Games Workshop has ALWAYS been expensive. Back in the 90's when it was £4 for a single Imperial Assassin it was expensive. Now the model for an assassin is £21 or £25. It's also made of plastic not lead, so the material itself costs about 90% less. Also, the last time I looked at GW's year end accounts, 10 or so years ago now, the total value of their sales had dropped yet their profit had increased. That means they're making more profit per sale. Their costs had not gone up. It was a lie then and it's a lie now.

And I had at least 2 armies I was looking at getting into. Once my lease is up at my current apartment and I'm in a new one with the space, I'm gonna put the money I'll have saved not starting those 2 armies into a good 3d printer and still have probably half of that money left over

Right after they just mothballed a large portion of the Sigmar range. A few months back they also killed several older models in the 40K line. Even as they did that, GW promised that "some" of these units would be restored with new models. And with this price increase, we get the honor of paying even more for the privilege of replacing those units. Isn't that generous of them?
