I have gone through Gamma knife surgery yesterday this is a much better option than open surgery. We started at 12am and by 3pm it was done and by 5/6 pm i was at home it is completely painless process

I had Gamma-Knife stereotactic radiosurgery in the Royal Hallamshire hospital in Sheffield back in 2003 after being diagnosed with a right-thalamic AVM which nearly killed me several times and caused me a life of utter hell. I would NOT be here to type this if I chose not to undergo the treatment so I can only advise anyone considering this treatment to take it. I am beyond what the word 'Grateful' can cover for the fantastic work of Professor Leksell that pioneered this technology and the team in Sheffield that applied it. However, the anguish and concerns about exposure wracked my mind before undergoing the treatment as I'm more than aware of the effects of ionising radiation. I am still here, albeit with issues but my AVM has not bled since. Thanks for this great informative video. From being at 30% mortality in 2002 and able to type in here in 2023 is technologically fascinating ! Thank you.

As someone who’s undergone another similar type of radiation therapy that uses a similar delivery called stereotactic radiation therapy, I think that this video is very accurate, and helpful in describing It.

I’ll be having this procedure done very soon. I have a brain AVM and I feel better about this. The thought of the craniotomy had me SHOOK!! I’m not afraid GOD got me!

I had this procedure 5 days ago. 2 days after the procedure I woke up with intense pain in my brain. It felt like my brain was being crushed as the pressure from removing the headset was being relieved. I also felt intense heat as if my brain cells were being fried. The mestastatic 2 cm tumor in my rib and surrounding tissue triggered an intense local pain which then triggered a system wide chemo pain. That night, I felt a 9 rating on the pain scale for about 14 grueling hours. The hospital treated me with oral Fentanyl, Morphine IV, and oral Oxycodone until Inlost my conscience from either exhaustion or pain. The following moring it was confirme that my brain underwent swelling and is being treated with 4 injections of steroids a day to decreate the swelling. Inhave been given a higher dosage of IV hydromorphone to control the pain.

I just came back from France because I had to get gamma knife radiation on my head because I have epilepsy which causes me to have seizures!! I still have them but it takes about 3 months to 3 years for them to settle down until I don't have them anymore!!! (Dr. Regis did my brain surgery,search him on KZfaq) I was awake when they did the surgery!! It hurt ALOT!!!

My father had a tumor on the right side. But I did not get my father. There was nothing wrong with the operation, but the radiation did not work until after the operation. Last they emptied their hands. The operation was performed by Amrita Hospital, Ernakulam

Gonna go through this is a couple days. I'm terrified. It's supposed to clot my AVM in my brain. Okay edit: So left this comment a year ago. Since then I've had this surgery twice, and honestly it was alright. If anybody has questions because you're worried or anything to do with what happens, ill answer anything. When I innitally left this comment, I would have really liked to be able to ask someone who had been through it questions. Just lmk! Procedure 1 was for a smaller portion of the avm. Putting the headgear on hurts a lot, but not to the extent that you'd be yelling out. You usually have an angiogram right before this procedure if it's for an avm. For procedure 1 I had the angiogram through my groin. I do not recommend going through thr groin. If you have any say in it, ask for going through the arm. I was then brought to a mri then finally to the surgery machine. I fell asleep during surgery. They took off the headgear afterwards and I felt alright. Afterwards I never had any puffing of my face (often happens with the numbing medicine the inject to the spots on your head that are screwed into) and never had any headaches. Went right back to normal stuff within a week. Procedure 2 was for the larger portion. Headgear, angiogram through the arm (much better), mri, surgery. Then after taking the headgear off my head ached for a very long time that day. They won't let you leave the hospital unless you eat something after surgery and I was in so much headache pain I could not eat for hours. Finally went home. My face did swell up, my undereyes got very puffy and my eyes swelled almost completely shut. I continued to have headaches for a while and one of the holes for the headpiece became a scar that I have on the side of my forehead to this day. A while later I ended up noticing a bald spot in my hair where the radiation had been directed (which I was not told could be a side effect). It was under my hair a ways so it was not noticeable, but it was there. About a month or two into recovery I started getting the most severe headaches I've ever had. Come to find out my brain was swelling thanks to surgery and I was put on steroids for 4 (?) Months. In that time I gained 40 lbs in 3 weeks. I hated these steroids but had to take them of the debilitating headaches would start again. Slowly I was able to get off of them and as of now I've had the "just take a mri every year" for two years now. Everything looks good. No bloodflow through thr avm. In that time I actually graduated high school and now I'm a sophomore in college. Doing great ❤️ you've got this. You are going to do so well. Even if this sucks right now, I know you'll be okay.

I had gamma radiation knife surgery about 4 years ago at one of the country's "finest" hospitals near Buffalo, New York. Within 4 weeks after the proceedure I woke up with a terrible case of Bell's Palsy on the same side I had the surgery. This is not like the other bouts of the palsy I have had (4 times) on the right side. But this palsy was a total blowout on the left side of my face from the gamma surgery. I still have TN, and now Bell's Palsy to go with it. If I knew these things were possible I would never have had the surgery. Be careful!

Dear Gamma Knife Center, I hoping it is possible to work together with your Gamma Knife technicians, and get advice. Because I am trying to work with a University Neuroscience lab, to build a modified Gamma Knife machine, that I am going to use to try to erase a specific spatial memory in a mouse, and small primate with a placement avoidance task experiment in an University lab. This idea is going to help people with depression, and suicide so I hope I can count on your help. I first need to build the modified Gamma Knife pipe, and I need a cobalt source, but I need your advice on: 1. How to start to build the modified Gamma Knife pipe. 2. How much dose is needed to ionize groups of synapses, and neurons at micron scales. 3. Advice on safety. 4. Or possibly if it is safer to use X-Rays rarther than Gamma Waves, or because of Ball Lens problems when trying to collimate GammaKnife beams. I sent my idea to the National Institute of health for an idea to erase SPECIFIC memories in a mouse, or small primates brain. I have found out I have an AVM of 12mm in my brain deep enough that my Neurosurgeon cannot operate. It is right behind my right eye near the Galen vein and the Neurosurgeon said if he operates I might have half my body paralysed (left side). So he recommended this procedure but I am terrorised to do it...he said I have time but I must do it before getting pregnant if I plan on having children...But I read I might have neurological issues after the procedure as it might damage some parts of my brain around the lesion during the process...that head frame thing is also scaring me too... 😔
