I watched it by mistake with my mother. I didn't even knew it was supposed to be in the Lord of the Rings universe, though it was just a movie, kind of meh, not terrible or good. As a Lord of the Ring movie ? is that a joke ?

I'm guessing because of the difference in Elrond's character in this and LOTR, and the general pastoral nature of Hobbits, the fact that Sam's a gardener, does the cooking, and likes taters.

It's to make it obvious this is "young Elrond" as the actor in ROP. Sam didn't want to be turned into sth unnatural, so Gandalf turned him into a potatoe. (I have heard another KZfaqr call the Irish accent Harfoots "potatoe hobbits")
