Really enjoying Gareths press for The Creator. Such a humble dude considering his portfolio. The fact he name dropped his best boy says a lot. Seems like a great dude and The Creator is a great movie.

Love how they took the artist’s complaints and actually made things more efficient instead of just planning to and then it never happens. That alone is rare.

People were giving this guy grief for supposedly screwing up Rogue One and Tony Gilroy needing to come in and do reshoots, and it has recently been publicized that this wasn't the case at all, that parts of the ending just didn't work and it was a collaborative process between the two directors. And despite the fact that reshoots happen *all the time* on films. Now that story and The Creator has shown skeptics that yeah, the guy is the real deal and not a hack. Goddamn I really wish they'd been able to keep the AT-AT chase scene though. Goddamn.

The trick behind bouncing lights off the environment to make the light feel integrated and motivated is an amazing tip. I've started writing fiction short stories recently and that trick translates well to writing. To not forcing story elements just because you can. The story gains realism and a depth/believability from the effort you take to mask the construction.

How fascinating. Reminded me of a few things personally...got to meet Syd Mead back when the original "Blade Runner" was in production and see some of his drawing. Wow! Also, what a smart piece of advice about the real/CGI divide. Even before CGI we were doing a car commercial and the Special Effects guy said, "Sure, we can make the car move up an incline. We'll build this motorized track, hook up the axel to it and set it at any speed you want. What'll it cost? Ten thousand (in 1980's dollars)." Our Key Grip walked up and said, "Me and my guys can do it with ropes and pulleys, no extra cost at all." Yeah, we used the Grips and saved ten grand. Thanks much for this informative piece, Gareth.

What I’m getting from this is VFX artists should be the reservoir from which blockbuster directors come and not art students who don’t have any real idea about the technical side of movie making but are famous for treating people like garbage and obsessively reshooting. The only real problem with this movie is the strength of the script in my opinion.

I watch the creator in the cinema. I thought it was film making catered to kids and the masses. I did not love it. The sound design was much too literal and diagetic, and too much action in too regular intervals. The jokes did not land in the dialogue and I didn't feel compelled to care about the characters. But then again, sci-fi is not my fav genre so maybe it's just my tastes. rant/
