@ernestogarcia31933 жыл бұрын
@@gel141 no, over 4 days everything was composed according to the documentary made on this album that you can simply look up on KZfaq. Everything was made from scratch and they went through everything on one take during the final day. So basically they had 3 days of composing and practicing and then one day of just recording everything, which they did in a sweeping single take for each. Not only that, but the drummer larnell Lewis wasnt even a part of this until the day of recording because the drummer never showed up, so that was his first time ever playing that whole set. Watch the documentary because honestly the entire making of this is just Freaking Awesome

@@sahilasthanamusic2503 I'm not familiar with too many current big band acts like Snarky. Most of the big band stuff that I know of is older. But if you're just looking for some good current jazz or jazz fusion bands check out any of these groups/guys: - The Bad Plus - GoGo Penguin - Medeski Martin & Wood - Kneebody - Mehliana (Mark Guiliana & Brad Mehldau drum & synth collab) - Mark Guillana's jazz trio & BEAT music project - Esbjorn Svensson Trio - Ulu (they don't play anymore, but they were big in the new york scene in the late 90s and early 2000s. They've got a few albums out that are pretty good. What's the Deal is my fav) - Chet Doxas (dude only has like 61 listeners on spotify, but I thought his Rich in Symbols album was pretty cool. Its like retro/synth wave meets jazz. Decent listen if you're into that sort of thing, and really the only thing like it I've found) And of course there's the older classic acts like Weather Report or Chick Corea's Electric Band. But I'd imagine you know about those already. Check out Cory Henry's stuff obviously (the keyboardist on this). And while you're checking out Corey you might as well check out the other recent phenom Jacob Collier if you haven't already. Robert Glasper's another really good current pianist and he's got a bunch of stuff that ranges between hip hop, r&b, jazz etc. Flying Lotus also does some heavy jazz infused hip hop. I dug Larnell Lewis's (the drummer here) album. Dirty Loops does a bunch of really cool reharmonizations. There's more obviously. But that should give you plenty.

Cory Henry is an improv enigma, but Shaun Martin has better melodic sensibility in my opinion. Thing of Gold is a masterpiece. You need to know Micheal League and Bill Laurance. They’re the composers. Mark Lettieri was the guitar player at the time and his solo work on baritone is siiiiick. If you like this, check out some Louis Cole, Fearless Flyers (and the other Vulfpeck bands), and FORQ. Oh... and if you liked the first few bars of Cory’s solo... you’re gonna wanna look into Jacob Collier. Dude modulates to half sharp keys in four chords for fun and it sounds good. Immediately makes the correct face while hearing Snarky Puppy! Been a fan for a bit. I continue to thank my friend that turned me on to Snarky. Plus the Family Dinner albums that expanded my library even further! And yes! No charts! Cheers man! Great video! Oh and subscribed!

A young American jazz drummer has never heard of Snarky Puppy or Larnell Lewis. Likely story.
@RJrules644 жыл бұрын
Nor Bob reynolds, who is another one of the biggest Jazz names in the world at the moment - yet this guy doesn't recognise him? Nor Cory Henry? Even my brother that doesn't care about music at all knows lingus.
@LisztyLiszt4 жыл бұрын
@@RJrules64 You're not saying he's pretending not to know the band or Lingus? Shock, Horror - where's the dislike button!!! The funniest part is when Cory Henry is just setting out on one of the all time great keyboard solos and when this guy hears the first few chords, he's like this guy's a genius. It's almost as if he knew there'd be more to follow that would confirm this statement. Wait, you mean he did know?! This man is a liar, you say?!!!
@garrettmillerdrums4 жыл бұрын
@@LisztyLiszt It was apparent he was a genius when he started pulling chord voicings out of the air, not even looking at his hands. It's in his eyes and it's's not that hard to see.

LisztyLiszt hell no dude. The intro to the solo could be the best part. Those chromatic colors henry uses to set up the solo are easily the most “genius” part of the entire solo. Show only that part to any jazz musician who has never heard snarky puppy and they will immediately recognize how amazingly talented cory is.

Thank you Garrett! I've never been into "this kind of music", the chaos jazz thingy. But watching you watching this opened my ears. I'm mostly a metal guy (that's how I found you) but I'm open for all kinds of music, but the closest I'm to jazz music is Jan Johansson and some small trad. jazz stuff. Greetings from Sweden!

Honestly for a jazz musician to be surprised nobody's reading, says a lot. Since, you know, jazz has historically rejected sheet music, as a basis to its entire sound revolves around improvisation and understanding what your fellow musicians are playing.

Reminds me of some old Spira Gira from the 70s or Stanley Clarke.... but without the bass solos. I think this is like..."okay we got Bobo over here... he gets a thing. Charlie over there he gets a piece of it. But horns, you gotta place this part no matter what. Let drummer dude do his thing, he will look your way then horns and keys, play off eachother. Just scat around... do what you are good at. And after we all get down.... we go back to that place in the beginning." Everyone has chops, and you get this part in the song to play your chops. Then this instrument, then that one. But the keys, you need to let him make his Jam salad. Once he is done, we good and fried. Eggs over easy and flipped. Song over..... smoke em if you got em.
