As a former competitive swimmer, you want colder training pools because you get hot and sweat during those long pool workouts (yes, you notice yourself sweating in the pool.) When the temp’s too high it’s brutal

There are probably days he ate like that, he'd for sure be well over 5k I would expect. But it's all hyperbole whenever people talk about diet or exercise in the past. Just think how many ex gym bros 'used to bench 3 plates when I was your age'

So the "cold shock protein" apparently "quadruples the rate of protein synthesis". If ONLY WE HAD HUMAN, RANDOMIZED, CONTROLLED TRIALS ... which clearly indicate that cold exposure reduces muscle protein synthesis, and also directly somewhat impair muscle mass accretion and strength over time. Mechanism: check, actual outcome data: check.

Not saying I agree with what Gary is saying, but basic physiology demonstrated that when your body gets cold, the metabolism increases to maintain body temperature. I don’t know the exact measurements though.
@DILFDylF

If you stand in a cold room your body also has to increase your metabolism to maintain your body temperature. It doesn't make it an effective fat loss tool because it is not enough calories.

Yeah that's exactly what he's arguing...not that Gary's statements have no basis but the extent to which he exaggerates as well as bigger factors like okay sure let's say that's true...but what's the overall goal Here? For most health topics its to live longer. So if whatever it is doesn't actually make you live longer. Then what use is it to just prove that you burn more calories, etc

Layne please address how authors of widely cited paper made up the fact that 35% of calories from protein is highly dangerous (deadly!) in general population. They just wrote the claim without citation in a review paper after they laid out unrelated mechanistic argument concerning urea cycle and absolute (gram) amounts of protein. Bilsborough, S.; Mann, N. They’re difficult as well, so there’s the triumph that comes with doing difficult things by choice. I’ve been training hard for 26 years, weights, grappling, running, Love them. But when I want to lose fat or weight. I hit a calorie deficit.

I do cold immersion every other day in the morning and sauna after active recovery workouts the others days. Anecdotally, on the cold immersion days, I have more energy, therefore, I’m able to endure higher intensity for longer. So I do cold immersion on my high intensity days. My cold immersion protocol is 50-55F for 8 minutes. I’ve lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks with no diet change.

My palms and the bottoms of my feet are burning when I'm plunged. I have to tell myself, it's okay., the pain is good. When I get out, my skin is red. Careful, I read if you get down to the low 30s your heart can stop. I'd look into that.

Huge fan Layne! I was genuinely wondering if we do burn more calories training in water than outside of water. I know this might be explained by increased resistance in the water but i have also heard about increased heat transfer in water resulting in more calories burned. Any insight would be appreciated!

They do the same thing with some bodybuilders crazy calorie counts. I remember one time it was said the bodybuilder in question was asked "what is the most amount of calories you ever consumed in a day." The Antarctica explorers needed around 7000 to 10000 calories to survive. They werent doing anything more than a bit of walking. Once they dropped below this they dropped weight fast. Last year I did 2 stints of bodysurfing 2 times a day for 1 hr over 2 weeks. Overall my exercise levels didn't change, I did eat a little more. My shred went from stagnation to dropping fat at like 2kg a week, which was too fast really, just by adding cold water. He is over exaggeration the point, but other than that, I think there is some reality. I was eating 6 meals a day, that were quite high in volume, I wasn't getting hungry. It's springtime here, so I am busy, so I am shredding, I am eating exactly the same as when I was bulking in winter, when there was F all to do

Could this be conflated with the fact that exercise in a cold pool allows for higher intensity due to the fact that core temperature is kept lower or brought down faster during exercise. Similarly to runs studies done in colder temperatures(can’t cite off the top of my head) is that intensity can be held for longer durations?

Can you explain a treatment called "cryotherapy" for the purpose of fat reduction. Cryotherapy involves exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures, typically through the use of liquid nitrogen or cold air. The idea is that this intense cold stimulates the body to burn calories and potentially reduce fat. They use in spas and it does work. So wouldn’t that explain cold to burn fat ?

Gary is saying the big jump in calories is training on land compared to water. Not because it’s only 4 degrees colder. It would be cool to see these guys talk and have a conversation about this.
