Gas Tank Rust Removal with Muriatic Acid

Rust, the most common known chemical reaction that occurs on metal. This gas tank is off A 1992 Yamaha XT225 serow. Been sitting for along time and the condensation developed inside the tank. Also life tip drop a clean dry rag inside the tank and then use compressed air. Rag flies all over tank absorbing the moisture and the air pressure will help you retrieve rag if tank is still on vehicle.

I had to scroll down the comments until I found... well... YOU!!! LMAO!!!! "This muriatic acid is JUST like acid." - Skecheyboy All joking aside @Skechyboy, thanks for doing this. I smashed the LIKE button and this is what I learned watching your video. If it has acid in the name, it is probably (definitely, without a doubt, for real) acid. Instructions on the bottle are kinda handy. Gloves, eye protection, long sleeves, and a friend to hold the camera may be worth taking the time to find and use. And what the hell do you do with old muriatic acid? How do you dispose of that crap?

I use muriatic acid to get all the thick rust then after rinsing that out and letting it just start to flash rust I throw in some phosphoric acid(rust converter). It seals the surface so the rust won't come back easily.

You must add a box of baking soda to the distilled water to neutralize the acid. Or it will cause problems. The acid in the metal will keep working if you don't kill it after the rust removal

Good point. So maybe the flush should incude the neutralzer as well. Are you saying high pressure water alone like a car wash would not be sufficient?

You don't dilute an acid with water. You put baking soda in there. You needed to neutralize the acid with a base to dispose of it. After the baking soda has done its thing, then you can add the water to remove everything. I'm sure where ever you poured out that muriatic acid at, the plants probably withered a bit. To get the water out of the tank, you just need to put the tank on top of a solid piece of metal and that sits on top of a grill/fire pit. The heat will dry out the water. Good show of what the power of muriatic (hydrochloric) acid can do :)

Great vid, use e85 to get the water out, or dry gas. Wonder if u can use some Ospho to convert the steel after the muriatic treatment.

my personal recommendation through experience is YES...OSPHO added then is a perfect time since OSPHO is most effective using a little rust to bind to. Also will keep the tank coated against flash-rusting.

Does it dossolve the rustbor does it come off in chunks because my problem with the vinegar is it got most of the rust off but its not aitting in the bottom of the tank and i cant getbit out

Doing mine tonight but gonna add some hot water first. Worried that pouring it straight will burn right through the metal

Also would be a good idea to first rinse tank out with baking soda and water to neutralize the acid then add a lubricant to coat the metal inside 2 cycle oil will work and protect it from re rusting prematurely, just an idea but good video non the less.

AUTOMATIC tranny fluid, is good too. IT has alot of anti-rust compounds in it as well.

@@petersack5074 Can also just throw some phosphoric acid in there and it will leave a coating that won't rust. That is pretty much how all car bodies before paint are done.

You should wear gloves and glasses, muratic acid gets added to water not water to acid. That stuff can splash. I use it in cleaning tanks as well. Works well.

Ten minutes, is too long, for pure acid. Which is why, the cap was literally, ' destroyed '. 2 minutes or so, was enough time to rid the innards, of the rust.

Aluminum gas tanks don't rust...rust is iron oxide

No the funnel was way bigger.....he thought......if it melts metal wouldn't you think it harms everything else? Skin... plastic ...and metal for some reason gas caps has 2 of 3... R.I.P. acid guy

Muriatic acid will EAT aluminium, plastic is a little safer, suspect that heated reaction was from an aluminium component in your gas cap

While it was informative, I was seriously concerned for your safety. I have used this acid and I just got a whiff of its action on metal by chance while being super careful - unforgettable for life - seems it burns the soft tissue in your nose. I use it inside plastic containers, and never pure. Muriatic acid is the other name for Hydrochloric acid.

You are very lucky you didn't get splashed or got the acid on you. You could have become blind or badly burned. You used no safety equipment, the very least rubber glove and goggles. Coca-cola is around 3% Muriatic acid is 31% to maybe 35%. If you breath the fumes during the reaction it could also be bad. You need to know what you are doing when you do it this way.
