Well done Jon - thanks for another good and informative video.

I would like to mention over the years I have seen a lot of filter bowl are over tighten and it bends the head of the gasolstor and it will leak so only nip the nut to hold the bowl on and also carry a spare rubber gasket as if tighten to much it will put a ridge in the rubber gasket causing it to leak and also they do age harden and make sure you lock wire safety wire the nut so it won’t viberste loose and safe flying

In Canada, the rules say that you have to have one... carburetored or not.

The gascolator shown also can't handle the high fuel flow from some fuel injected engines as they may have a fuel return that can increase the fuel flow up to 30 GPH higher than the engines actual fuel burn. This type has a very small filter area that does not do well above 10 GPH.

I noticed you did not comment on removing the screen to clean it. Is this not recommended for this gascolator?

how often should you check/drain water from the gascolator?

Is act like this is a secondary method to drain fuel. What's another method?

Having a specific drain point using a petcock like the one on the gold can in this video. Being able to drain fuel is good for maintenance and for transporting the craft on a trailer.

You say this has to be placed at the lowest point of fuel line. Doesn't this unit create it's own lowest point where ever it is installed?
@HomebuiltHELP

You need to look at the entire length of the fuel line from gas tank(s) to engine. Wherever the lowest point is along this line, that makes a potentially good location for the gascolator.

The only times I see something like this being really handy is when you get a bunch of bad gas with water in it (happened to a bunch of customers that bought gas near our shop) but at that point you could easily overwhelm a smaller unit like this, one customer had nearly a full tank of water with some gas in it when a near by station had a massive tank failure!

I have it on my BMW from factory combined with proper fuel filter and heating (diesel) its not in the lowest point so tank cannot be drain with it but it has the function for draining fuel system near the engine

The alcohol in mogas absorb small quanties of water, also cars run nearly dayly unlike ac that somtimes stood for weeks not flying....

and why would it need to be at the lowest point in the fuel systems , the other name for these is an aglomorator , they have been used in plant since gods dog was a pup.

So any water in the fuel system naturally ends up there.

@@DIYPackraft nope ,,, thats actually not how they work ,,, the drain bung on thee tank will take care of most of that , the idea is to slow down fuel flow by expanding the space to let water droplets fall out of suspension , you could make it the highest point in the system and it will still work
@DIYPackraft
@DIYPackraft Жыл бұрын
@@tomthompson7400 Respectfully, no. When an aircraft sits on the ground (99% of the time), any water in the fuel migrates to low points in the system. Draining from only the fuel tank sumps will not ensure that all the water is removed from the system before flight. Also, water will crack the aluminum fuel lines if it’s allowed to collect at a low point and freeze.

@@DIYPackraft then why isnt it screwed to the tank outlet ,,,

@@tomthompson7400 Most airplanes have multiple fuel tanks and they aren’t the lowest point in the fuel system.
