PRODUCTION on Stargate's television shows was a sprawling enterprise, employing hundreds of people to make more than 350 hours of entertainment. Stargate was a cornerstone of the Vancouver film and television industry for over a decade.
Every once in a while, though … something slips through the gears of that well-oiled machine. A production goof makes it unseen through the layers of filming, editing, and post-production, and onto the screen. And, of course, Stargate fans are there to notice.
Here we’re running down some of our favorite errors from the franchise. Have you seen another one we missed? Put it in the comments below!

Stargate Universe was a wonky one, but I think it did have some potential. I didn't really like the communication stones though. Universe would have needed something more like Q from Star Trek than aggressive enemies. Something that was powerful and mysterious and you wouldn't know if it was friend, enemy or just someone goofing with them.

No, the biggest goof is Stargate: Universe. A huge expensive goof. Besides, the Stargate franchise was on its last legs. Whenever there is a long running series, it starts being encroached by the Terrible Two: *Overexposure* and *Running Out Of Ideas* , and the audience starts losing interest. As a producer you really have to know when to end a series on a big note, rather than just milking it over and over until it dies. Stargate: Universe should have never existed.

SG-1: don't get me wrong, I love this show - But, I'm good with them ending it where they did. It's time had come. SGA: Would have been a neat story Arc for Atlantis on Earth and becoming the new HQ for the SGC (Since the Pegasus gates override older MW gates). SG-U: That's the real crime here. It was heartbreaking, as a viewer, watching Destiny go to sleep knowing that it would never awaken (the entire franchise has been canned.)
@3333927
@3333927 2 жыл бұрын
Well, with the movies SG1 had a nice ending, that's right. I didn't like the whole Ori plot anyway as much as the Goa'uld and Replicators plot. It finally had to come to an end. But without the movies, there really had to be a final season 11. The ending of SGA left us in the dark what's next. A final season or movie would have been very nice! But it would be a nice startpoint for a new SG series, too. Now on earth, they would have the time and resources to discover the whole city and maybe discover where the ZPMs are made. With a bunch of new ZPMs and the whole Asgard technology there even might be a plausible possibility for a crossover with Dark Matter. For example a parallel universe, where the alteraner never build any stargate (= Dark Matter) SGU, well... that's really a true crime. Same thing as it was with Dark Matter. I hope, we will get the answers somehow in a new series of Stargate.

I grew up watching Stargate and now as an adult, I’m in the military myself. Absolutely love the show and I just want to say, Stargate SG-1 gets more things right than any other show I’ve seen. Most of the time I cringe at military shows or movies because they mess up too much for me to do anything but nitpick their mistakes rather than enjoy the show. SG-1 isn’t like that. I do notice goofs here and there, but the show itself is so amazing that it genuinely doesn’t irk me. That said, if anyone is curious what they DID get wrong about the military: They use cell phones 20+ levels underground, and in classified areas. They do not use code names for SGC, the Stargate, etc. and openly say those buzz words in public areas (Foothold episode where Carter meets Mayborne at a cafe). Hammond addressed Simon (who is a Master Sergeant / E-7) as “private”- the USAF does not have privates, they have airmen. And even if they did, anyone above the rank of E-4 is considered a non-commissioned officer. Another thing is their small unit tactics are not realistic at all. For instance, if you’re taking fire, you are not going to duck behind cover and then raise yourself up from behind it to shoot - you would position your weapon around the edge and expose as little of yourself as possible. One example of this is the Zatark episode, where Martouf tries to kill POTUS and Teal’c hops out from the gate room’s wall (which is concrete!! Ideal cover) to shoot him, fully exposed. Another example is their tactical movements on an enemy planet. They don’t move in a tactical formation or space themselves out correctly, so one enemy grenade could kill the whole team. They don’t conduct SLLS (Stop, Look, Listen, Smell) when they are knowingly entering enemy controlled territory. Their briefings lack a format (I understand why, the viewer doesn’t want to sit and listen to an Operations Order every time they conduct a mission, but just know in real life, it’s not like that). And don’t even get me started on Hammond’s salutes! But I will say, generally SG-1 got SO much right. I noticed in Season 7, O’Neill had to use an access card to get down to the lower levels of the base, which is a great detail. In another episode, they mentioned a non-disclosure agreement being signed prior to someone being made aware of the Stargate program - also correct. Their uniforms are also pretty good. I’m not in the USAF, so I don’t know what order their racks should be in, but the PLACEMENT looks really good. If it’s wrong, it’s not noticeable to anyone outside the Air Force. I also appreciate that they use ribbons instead of medals. Some shows use medals (which isn’t inherently wrong) or mix ribbons and medals together (which is wrong), but most people in real life prefer ribbons be because medals are so heavy. Anyway, if you were curious about seeing the show from a military perspective, here ya go. :)

My military experience [not in the US] consisted of sitting in an air conditioned room in the middle of a big city and providing tech support, yet I too was always facepalming when they got completely out of cover before shooting at the bad guys. There was one time when Daniel not only walked out of his cover but actually walked right up to a bad guy who had their back turned to him before shooting. What exactly do you do when conducting an SLLS? Do they stand silently and sniff around? And what's an Operations Order?

@@limiv5272 It’s essentially a short halt during movement to ensure no enemy are in the vicinity. So you’re just using the five senses to get a sense of your surroundings. And an operations order is how you receive a mission from higher. I’m sure it varies by military branch, but there’s a set format and a way you brief it to subordinate elements that SG-1 never followed. Which I’m sure is the thematic element at play, because the truth is it would make their briefing scenes SUPER boring haha :)

From what I know Hammond was former military. Maybe he did bring the salutes his unit used when he was in the military with him just as a wink to former members. From what I know some units do have a special signature details just for recognition. I can agree that some of the tactics might not be as you did learn, but at the same time it might have made filming more complicated. Another factor to consider is to avoid spreading some knowledge by intentionally getting it wrong since you don't know what alignment the viewers have. So far the goofs in Stargate haven't been really cringe level, the most cringe is time travel episodes, but that goes for any show since it's so easy to get things really wrong, just one single simple detail and you are lost. Just an example that's not SG related, Sweden changed from left hand traffic (same as UK) to right hand traffic in 1967, and if someone makes a movie / show with time travel and it predates the change and the cars drives on the wrong side for that era then it's a major goof.

The most glaring one for me was SG1- Episode 1. Apophis and his guard come through the gate for the first time, then back out through the same open wormhole. As wormholes are only one directional,and the Goa'ld dont have remote diallers, this should have killed them all. Would have saved a LOT of Apophis hassle.
@GateWorldDotNet
@GateWorldDotNet 2 жыл бұрын
The gate does shut down in that sequence. What they never showed on screen was how the Jaffa managed to redial (though much later the writers introduced a device that does as much).
@Pavel_M_Mihalik

The 2009 version of the pilot fixed this issue. As SGC´s soldiers run towards the gate room, the dialing sound of the gate was added. Years later, a goa'uld hand device was showed that can open the gate, so that retroactively explained how Apophis opened the gate.
@GateWorldDotNet
@GateWorldDotNet 2 жыл бұрын
@@Pavel_M_Mihalik We also touched on this is a video on the script-to-screen changes for "Children of the Gods" a year or two ago. The original script actually had a visual effect showing Apophis using his hand device to reactivate the Stargate. It never made the episode.

What's odd about that first one is the outer ring of the tattoo is consistent to the normal alignment where it thins out on the upper edge. The snickers bar could have been mackay pocket munching while he fiddled with stuff on board, part of his character was that of a bottomless snacker, and the absence later does come after the ark had been decompressed which is why shepard is in a spacesuit.

This video was lovely. Hungarian fans noticed plenty of errors. Here are some of my favorites : 1. "200" - They used the SG-1's prop gate at the end of the episode instead of the Wormhole X-treme gate. 2. "Death knell" - When the team comes to rescue Carter the gate is upside down so the transparent wormhole effect should have been used like the back part of the wormhole. 3. "The Return" - Atlantis and MW gates have 8 chevrons at the Midway station animation. Similar two glyph sided gates were in the "Inferno" too when the gate has fallen into the lava. They had the same error in Moebius when the MW gate is lowered and McKay and Carter watched in the gate room. 8 chevron P gate was crrated as vfx error in the Asuran satellite at "First Strike" 4. "Seizure" - The MW gate had way too many repeated glyphs on Langara on SGU. I believe the MW gate set was sold at this stage so they had only some part of it and they had to add digitally the glyphs. 5. "Serpent's lair" - Script was left on the sarcophagus when they talk to Bra'tac. csillagkapu.hu/kep.php?kep=kepek.csillagkapu.hu/hiba/2x01/03.jpg 6. "Thor's Hammer" vs Thor's Chariot - there are trees around the gate while it was an empty clearence a year ago 7. "Thor's Chariot" - When they send the MALP, the background is not behind the gate so the original wall of the Bridge Studiomcan be seen. csillagkapu.hu/kep.php?kep=kepek.csillagkapu.hu/hiba/2x06/07.jpg 8. "Broca divide " - C2 sign is missing from the entrance door in the gateroom csillagkapu.hu/kep.php?kep=kepek.csillagkapu.hu/hiba/1x04/07.jpg 9. "Hathor" - the website is a fake internet site on the harddrive csillagkapu.hu/kep.php?kep=kepek.csillagkapu.hu/hiba/1x13/01.jpg 10. "Maternal Instinct" - Daniel arrived in a short sleeve t-shirt which became a long sleeve shirt inside csillagkapu.hu/dbhibak.php?ep=3x20 11. "Windows of opportunity " - The Stonehenge type of arch is not always there behind the gate. The explanatio is that the same set was used for the arrival and the table scenes so they had to rotate the set. csillagkapu.hu/dbhibak.php?ep=4x06 12. "Curse" - When Osiris pushed away Sam and Janet you can see the soft wall is shaking. Error 2 here is how the flashlight changes angle during the Osiris-Daniel conversation. csillagkapu.hu/dbhibak.php?ep=4x13 13. "Summit" - Daniel read the same copies of the Goa'uld letter on his desk at the study of the summit in the SGC csillagkapu.hu/kep.php?kep=kepek.csillagkapu.hu/hiba/5x15/04.jpg 14. "Prometheus Unbound" - The wrong Goa'uld prop was given to Vala. She should have had the healing device instead of the lighting bolt ring from "Demons". 15. "Hide and Seek " - Chevrons are not on the Atlantis gate at all when we could see it fom the inside of the black smoke in the end

You're hired! :) Thanks for a great list. I wrote a reply but KZfaq ate it (probably because you were editing the comment). I've seen several of these but a bunch are new to me (the SGC wall in "Thor's Chariot!"), so I am taking good notes. I looked at the gate lowered in "Moebius, Part 1" and count nine chevrons. I do know there are a bunch of 8-chevron gates out there, especially peppered through Atlantis. I count this as a really unfortunate consequence of the show using multiple VFX houses during this period. Of all things to maintain consistency on, you would think the Stargate itself would be it.

Great video. I noticed none of those. One error I noticed was in an episode Carter was going to go on a date lamenting that Colorado Springs has no zoo. This is patiently untrue. @@GateWorldDotNet omg?! They addressed it? That's hilarious because it really just yanks you out if you've ever been to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (a popular local landmark) which is so close. Sadly, their lame defense also falls flat because there's no base housing, so she had to go home at some point (and you think they would've hooked them up with some on-base housing given how close Carson was and is -- literally the main gate road runs into Carson). Local stuff was the big error that usually caught my eye. Fort Carson has a much closer hospital to Cheyenne Mountain so I always imagined the military ambulances having to drive 45 minutes up I-25 to the USAFA hospital instead of 8 minutes to the close-by Carson hospital whenever they were inexplicably on the Academy grounds. Just made me chuckle. The only other ones that I remember pulling me out was the police car livery and the housing development that is also on the mountain (that time dilation must have been a real pain to explain). But the zoo being literally on the same mountain was perfect oversight! Too funny.

All of the practical hero zats performed the functional operations seen onscreen... They could activate (open), fire, and deactivate (close). Yes, there was in fact a seperate button that would be depressed and served as the weapon's 'trigger', and there was a function to go along with it that the prop would perform practically every time it was pressed. Most people don't even know it, but the entire forward half of the 'barrel' - including the 'muzzle' - will all kick back in a reciprocating "recoil action" every time the trigger button is depressed. Frankly this function was included less for the viewer/audience and more for the sake of post-production/VFX, and to some degree for those on set to nail kill queues and such. Every time that front barrel portion would recoil and make a little "puh-tff, puh-tff" sound it would indicate that the weapon was being fired, thus indicating to the VFX and Sound Design team that they needed to include one or more zat discharge animations and sound effects at the respective points. It also gave the actors and stunt performers a more tangible queue to use when delivering and taking fire from a zat. It's not like it would have any recoil due to it being an energy weapon, so actors wouldn't be mimicking muzzle rise and a need to control it as with traditional projectile based firearms which gives everyone an easy visual aid/queue to work with (in circumstances where gunfire is added exclusively in post production and there is no blank ammunition and/or limited pyrotechnics involved in a combat action sequence). The first three (or four, I don't recall how many working models they built initially) functional dynamic zat props were more or less cobbled together using mostly custom made components. The endoskeletal structure was constructed primarily from 6061 aluminum with a variety of steel, aluminum, and composite parts while the outer shell was composed of a vacuformed ABS polymer that was then distressed and painted as needed. The actual mechanical/moving parts consisted of a series of micro pneumatic actuators that were were driven via a compressed air power supply. The first pneumatically driven iterations were supplied a constant source of air pressure via a remote hardline that was male/female coupled near the base of the grip portion and connected to a portable compressor using a long flexible air line hose . The air line would then be hidden within the actor's/stunt performer's wardrobe by feeding it up the sleeve into the jacket/top and pulling the remainder out through the back, or in some cases running it down the leg of the trousers until it came out by the ankle. It was all dependent on the specific requirements for the scene/sequence in question and what other factors might be relevant like indoor vs. outdoor environment, ambient and stage lighting, camera angle, dynamic vs. static actor performance, etc. In many cases they would have to go through some painstaking efforts in post to remove any blatantly visible parts of the air hose and such that would be visible, especially if it was a close up action shot and/or the actor was wearing short sleeves or something. This type of post-production editing can be greatly influenced by the angle of the shot and all of the various lighting conditions, making it much more difficult to hide certain things and potentially ruining the appearance of a crucial pivotal moment in a plot (Sci-fi fans in particular can be especially picky and observant in this regard, making them a bit more difficult to please on occasion). Luckily the remote line approach for an air supply was essentially just a temporary stop-gap measure, and it wasn't long before the pneumatic zats were modified to operate using onboard internally self-contained gas resovoirs instead. A limited supply of compressed air was stored in a small tank housed within the grip, allowing for each system to be individually charged off any compressor or portable air tank and function independently without any tethers or hoses for a short time. Unfortunately the reservoir tank was pretty compact and rather low-volume, and the pneumatic system was quite notoriously inefficient in terms of air consumption due to the lack of a low pressure regulator in the system, so it was common to have one or two gassed up and prepped just offscreen so they could continue to rotate them out as they lost pressure. They were also subject to some pretty noticeable pressure drop effects almost immediately after the first one or two operations, meaning reduced performance and efficiency with each drop in tank pressure, making each operation more choppy and/or sluggish than the last. Beyond this, the pneumatic zats were overwhelmingly unreliable and prone to failure pretty often, requiring maintenance and mechincal/internal lubrication. Due to a lack of proper on-board pressure regulation, they were constantly blowing seals and requiring frequent tear down in order to go through and replace them all. They required continuous nigh constant attention and care and were excessively difficult to disassemble and reassemble as they weren't designed for this and were quite intricate/mechanically complex, especially for the time. On top of that they were also some very expensive pieces of prop hardware that likely saw far more invested in their commission than initially intended. This only increased over time with all of the parts and labor that went into keeping them working over the years as well, so of course they got as much as they could out of them. The pneumatic zats became intensely hated by the props/SFX crew and after years of having to maintain those nightmares, but fortunately they would eventually catch a break.. During the filming of season 6, the pneumatically operated dynamic practical zat props would be redesigned and replaced with a set of some brand-spanking new, state-of-the-art electronic system platforms that were driven by switches, servos, and silicon while being powered by a rechargeable NiCad battery. These new zats were better in every way, offering far superior performance, longevity/efficiency, a much more attractive and realistic looking shell, and greatly reducing the weight of each unit by a substantial amount. They produced like three of these electronic zats as well if I'm not mistaken, and this is what they continued to use for their main functioning practical zats for the remainder of production (they may have swapped to a LiPo or Li-Ion power plant at some point towards the end there, but I'm not entirely sure honestly). They did hang on to the original pneumatic zats for back ups and extras as well, but they tended to use the electronic ones as much as possible once they had 'em. Also besides the static stunt zat props you mentioned, they also had static stunt versions in the open position that were used so the expensive functioning props didn't have to be thrown around and abused at all. There were also stunt zats that were composed of flexible foam resin with metal wire inserted throughout the length of the design that could be manipulated manually by hand to rest in the open or closed position depending on the need. They were soft and flexible enough to be manhandled and tossed about without concern of damage to people or property, yet the internal metal wire offered structural rigidity and the ability hold a desired shape or be changed on-demand. These still pop up for sale ebay and such from time to time, both screen used originals and reproductions alike. Definitely a more obscure item though in either case, to be sure...

The thing about the Sears Tower could possibly be explained as an alternate timeline as you mentioned. Time travel has happened in the Stargate series at least 4 or more times, and we've been shown it does actually create different outcomes in the future even when things went smoothly. Jack's pond, for example. Now, if you consider the order in which each event happens, then it's reasonable to assume minor changes would have happened each time. Weir traveled back 10,000 years and met Janus, leading to SG-1 finding the time jumper and going back to when the Goa'uld were still powerful on Earth. They changed the timeline back and forth in that instance. We also have the events of SGU's Novus plotline, most of the crew being stranded 300 years in the past. Then there's Continuum, taking place in an alternate future and in 1930-ish. And last is the events of 1969. With Jack's pond as evidence, it's 100% plausible that at least one of those events caused the Sears Tower to appear in the skyline a few years before it actually existed.

Wow! That's a pretty subtle error, but you're right. When Sam, Martouf, and Jacob are leaving the Stargate should be the other direction. Unless SG-1 was originally walking in a loop around a hill and coming back toward the gate when they first encountered the Tok'ra.
@TuneTamasha
@TuneTamasha 2 жыл бұрын
@@GateWorldDotNet I try to rationalize it as an editing choice that looks better or at least is in sync with them reaching the gate in the following shot where they run from left to right. There could have been a different editor who didn't know. Or they strategically chose the other direction to avoid the Goauld. It looks odd if you watch the episodes together though. This one was on my mind for years. Nitpicky perhaps, but it's kinda fascinating how many small and minor errors are there despite the episode count. This is fun. Though I have to admit that a few errors and inconsistencies in the franchise are truly head scratchers that somewhat take away as a whole from the quality when you review it. Will try to think of some more.

In The Tok'ra 2 at the end. The SGC waiting for Jacob and Carter with a opened Gate, but at the Same time they runned to the Gate Dialed it, with the Conflict who opened the Gate first (Also, but not clear is, don't you see this at the red glowing light on the DHD?)

Basically all of these I find very easy to ignore, it's basic mistakes that I can understand. One thing that will jump out at me is reusing props... I remember watching SGA for the first time, first episode as they enter the "conference room" on Atlantis and it hit me like a slap in the face... the tables, I knew those tables. I actually remembered where I had seen them, SG1 season 6 episode 17 Disclosure, the one with Supreme Commander Thor correcting Kinsey on his title. Same tables, my suspension of disbelief doesn't hold up on stuff like that, an Ancient alien city in another galaxy, sunk 10,000 years ago, has the same tables. I have a vague recollection of guns being reused from another franchise as well, but the tables was the biggest one for me.

Well, I remember seeing one effects goof with a staff weapon where the Jaffa had it pointed straight up and the bolt came out the bottom of the shell. There was a second time Teal'c fired a Zat from the closed position at a crystal skull. Michael Shanks recounts a goof when Corin Nemec fires a Zat a bunch of times but the effects guys were doing him no favors and didn't add in extra bolts to correspond with the trigger pulls. I think he attributed that to actor error, though.

There was the episode where O'Neil downloaded the ancient database to his head (for the first time) and he built the diy ZPM in order to get to the Asgard planet. In some later episode Carter (I think) said that the Asgard built it. I think that's pretty bad... Another thing that always bugs me, is that when they shoot the Replicators in a ship or in the SGC, there's never any bullet holes on the walls, not even small marks left by the bullets hitting the wall. In the Ark of Truth they had that huge machine gun that was bolted to the floor and even that didn't leave any marks to the walls or broke any pipes or electric wires attatched to the wall. Col. Mitchell said in one episode "bullets bounce!", that also never happens when they're shooting the Replicators...

That's not the worst part about that energy source - at a later episode Carter and alternate reality Carter figure out how to make the device work again, yet later it's claimed they do not know how it works and nobody uses this very useful thing again. They could've used it to dial Pegasus whenever they wanted. It was definitely powerful enough, Pegasus is closer than Ida
