It’s a good idea to drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop it from spreading before it’s welded

By welding the entire crack and turning the steel basically molten, it negates this hole nonsense. With all the extra bracing he added it should also keep the stressed areas from cracking the new welds.
@yanni1398
@yanni1398 Жыл бұрын
@@dancarlos1216 It's good practice to do the extra step considering it takes just a couple seconds and nullifies any chances since negating the crack depends very much on penetration. I get being pragmatic and saying good enough but considering the trailing arms application it's better to be prudent 🙂

You should replace the power steering reservoir after any system change. They have filters in the bottom of the reservoir and you’ll see consistent rack failures because they will hold debris in the reservoir.

@@mrb1864 the problem with the filter is that it’s a set amount of microns so debris finer than that will get into your system no matter what. it’s a common problem with Hondas, Nissans, Toyotas, etc

a couple of suggestions...wheel to wheel will stress things a lot more than time attack did...so your rear wheel bearings will probably not last as long. Bring a a pair of hubs to the track (you might also want to carry front wheel bearings/hubs and spare brake rotors). Also, your power steering fluid will need to be serviced much more often, probably after every race weekend.

Counting turns definitely doesn’t work when changing inner tie rods. I’ve had them be different lengths such that counting turns resulted in wildly out of spec toe. Better to actually take measurements to get the new tie rods as close as possible to the correct position before going to the alignment shop. Of course this assumes driving the car to the shop. If it’s trailered then obviously it doesn’t matter.

The wheel bearings may fail a bit less frequently if you torque the nut to spec.
@Hotpotato11
@Hotpotato11 Жыл бұрын
Hey there, (just questioning something respectfully as I actually have no idea) is it possible he torques them just a bit more as the type of driving he does requires that extra tightness as it’s under more pressure?
@jameshaulenbeek5931
@jameshaulenbeek5931 Жыл бұрын
@@Hotpotato11 no. Over torqued anything will fail more quickly.
@coreyscarrepairs
@coreyscarrepairs Жыл бұрын
@@Hotpotato11 I understand why you may think that, but no. All wheel bearings come with a torque spec as the manufacturer decided that was the amount of force required to keep the bearing securely in place without crushing the races and causing the bearing to fail prematurely. Now, older vehicles and heavy duty vehicles used taper bearings. These were absolutely essential to not overtighten. This is because the tightness of the nut literally put more tension on the bearings as it was driving the taper further into the race. Taper bearings were put on essentially hand tight and held in with a cotter pin. What you see on Ben's car is a more common roller bearing. Now, most likely Ben is correct and its the stress from track days and hard turns that are killing these bearings and not the fact that he runs the nut in with an impact. The Roller style are not tapered and therefore the torque on the nut LIKELY does not cause extra stress on the bearings inside, though it could if it was like extremely extremely tight. My point at the end of the day was "hey man at least if you torque it you might get a couple more track days out of it." But this has been a debate in every shop I've worked in and its about a 50/50 chance that a technician these days will actually torque one to spec as its not what you would consider extremely important since the nut gets staked and can't back off.
@greysonkeanu
@greysonkeanu Жыл бұрын
I’m positive he torqued it once it was on the car. In filming there are so many things happening that either - A. You just didn’t get a shot of it. Or B. There was a shot of it but it didn’t make the cut so they didn’t use it for one reason or another. So they don’t show every single thing that happens. If they did, the video would be as long as it takes to actually do the job, which is hours long.
