It’s a great yet ultimately futile thing: Trying to describe the experience of a great vintage guitar that 99.9999 percent of us will never see in the real world, let alone touch or play, is like… with all due respect, like trying to describe the Sistine Chapel and the trove of treasures in it to someone who has always been blind, and will never get there to experience it in any way. Any yet we watch anyway, trying glean a little bit more of info or another perspective to affirm what we already have heard, and yet for all the great and well-intentioned efforts, and no matter how many videos we watch, not any of us are ever actually closer to the experience but the reviewer, themselves. Such is life. Thank you for a great watch and coverage.

Lol .. Actually, it scared the crap outta me - I wasn't expecting it! Hahaha. Having usable volume and tone pots, you can see the value in it with moves like that. It's as much the delicate depths of the "clean" tone before as much as the sweet saturated roar that erupts after. Modern pots can approximate the latter, but the former not so much.. Not after you see what this Badboy can do. ..I still just can't understand why we can't make the same stuff today 🤷‍♂️. We have the know-how, the will, the funding (via the massive demand)...we are modern, we are supposed to be the cutting edge...I just don't get it!

I'm seeing this video super late obviously, but my god... I'm obsessed with Les Pauls - I play them and watch videos about them and listen to them literally every chance I get - and I can honestly say I think that is the best-sounding burst I have ever heard in my life. I know tone is also in the hands and your playing is incredible, but you can just hear every note so clearly. As you said, there's so much "air" around each note, it's incredible. And that taper! I'm not kidding, this is one of the best demos of a 59 I've ever heard. That guitar just so alive, you can practically hear it breathing. I have some great reissues, but nothing comes close to that. I think this video helped me finally "get" why everyone is so crazy about 59 bursts.

I had to come back and watch this again. The pickups in that burst are incredible. I had dreams about them last night. Ha! I got a new R9 in October 2018 and I have to say the new Custombuckers come about as close to real PAFs as anything Gibson has made in the last 50 years but there’s still nothing like the real thing. I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s thinking humbuckers were supposed to sound “thick” and muddy but that’s SO wrong! The best ones have that single coil clarity that you’re talking about. You can really hear the definition of each note, especially in the wound strings. Great video my man! 🎶

Amazing tone, amazing playing! I had the privilege of checking out a ‘58 and a ‘60 burst. Both had that clear low output tone which the PAFs are synonymous for. Now I knew why they were sought after!

That was insane. I think that demonstration really showed why they’re such valued guitars. I’ve seen other videos of people playing original bursts, but they play in a way that doesn’t show how dynamic the guitar is. The way you played almost gave a fear like feeling with as the volume knob went higher and higher, until the sound became powerful, but still crisp, like a crack of lightning. The range is really amazing, when you first started playing I definitely heard the telecaster type twangy sound, but when pushed further it develops a really unique powerful, but still balanced sound. Can definitely see why these became associated as hard rock machines, and why Slash wanted one so bad he got a replica. With as strong as a tone that you got, it’s hard to imagine that guys back in the day felt they needed to take the pickup covers off for even more drive… it doesn’t seem like it would be necessary at all, although it sounds like it was because amps were weaker back then? Not sure.

@@MOBontv of course man. Great video! You are very lucky. One more thing real quick though. Why do you think that the Danger Burst is so light? My 1999 Les Paul standard is weight relieved and weighs ten pounds.

@@russianbot2397 my historic 58 is just over 8libs and not chambered at all. The danger was even lighter. 8lbs even. No idea, just the wood they were using back then. Such a pleasure and honor to play it. Its the voice of god. ha

@@MOBontv Voice of God indeed! As for the weight, it must be that the wood lost some moisture over time and lost some weight. Especially the heavy maple cap. Though your historic makes no sense being that light. Very strange. Maybe mine doesn't have the weight relief and that's what makes it a boat anchor. I'll have to x-ray it.

I recently bought a 2018 True Historic R9 that has that same neck you described here. It has a ultra soft V shape almost undetectable but there. I love it and found out it was digitally copied from a 59' burst known as "Carmelita". It is a great feeling neck.

IM FLABBERGASTER HOW NOBODY CAN DUPLICATE A 60 YR OLD GUITAR, PICKUPS, HARDWARE....THE ONLY PERSON THAT MAKES PICKUPS JUST AS GOOD IS DAVE STEPHENS, SDPICKUPS, THERES NO DENYING IT, BUT HE WORKS TIRELESSLY ON EACH SET..NOBODYS GONNA DUPLICATE THAT ON AN ESSEMBLY LINE. BUT HE DID IT!

When I bought my last house there was ONE thing that was not negotiatable. The house had a huge FROG with carpet which I ripped up within a week. We put down hardwood floors and I told myself with the exception of the amps and a few needed chairs, table "all wood", I was not going to clutter it up. Now the sound up there is glorious!! Vintage Marshalls, some Fender 5e3s, a cord and a my guitar of choice that day.

@@MOBontv many people do not realize the time and effort that goes into years,hours endless practice but you deserve credit.few people have the dedication.You did the 59 vintage justice Matt.If you knew how many times at my age had the chance to buy vintage 57,58,59,60 all original gibson les pauls for $5000 you would scream.Nobody wanted them,57 juniors,$75 on 48st manhattan.NO MORE.I was great listening to your video.please keep them coming.thanks

Very nice playing, and beautiful guitar ofcourse. I just finished my second LP build, time that you try-out those two😂. Both a copy of the '59. Only the second build has a reduce weight in the body about 430gr. But sounds beautiful too.

A great explanation, and a great demonstration - thanks. My first Gibson Les Paul Custom from the late '70's always frustrated me, and I spent a small fortune of money paying for customisations. It was very heavy in weight. I always knew that Jimmy Page achieved a better sound and playability. I had the same experience with my '70's Fender Stratocaster. I eventually changed to the Ibanez RG Series Double Locking Trem, Low Pro, Zero Point Return System. However, if I had have had the Gibson 1959 Les Paul, you played so beautifully, then my life would have been so very different and so much better. You echoed my thoughts exactly. Peace.

50s Les Pauls sound like a Gibson semi-hollow and Fender Tele had a baby. The sound is traditional Gibson balls with Fender brightness and clarity.

Ok so I'm sat here with my own LesPaul, looking down and looking up and looking down, and looking up, and thinking DAAAAAAMN!! Really nice playing bud. To think these instruments were built when music was so very different and distortion was a waste product to be embarrassed about. Strange how life goes, and how we change things, but how telling that a 60 year old Gibson can keep up and blow the tears right of the bluest son of a....

That guitar is old and has a lot of wear. Kidding of course. Amazingly bright and resonate sounding without being harsh. I noticed the mic is on the ampeg cabinet.

For sure. Yes, trainwrecks were tuned to go with an Ampeg V4 but loaded with pre-rola celestions of course. Ken was a genius. The combo sounds incredible. Sounds killer with a basketweave, but the Ampeg has more clarity and punch. Thanks for watching

The benefit of lower output humbuckers is overlooked by many. You can push the amp harder and have more tonal possibilities...A good amp and a great guitar, played by an excellent guitarist covers almost all the bases.

I played the same guitar at the philly show. Also played the 57 goldtop at the same show same booth. Both were heaven . I went to the show this year in July . I compared my 2019 LP 50s gold top to a real 57 gold top and it was very very close. Everyine at the booth was excited about the 2019. I think the new 50s 60s standatds are very special. They feel like a vintage piece. If you haven't played one yet id love to bring it to you i live close lol

I don’t understand how it thins out when you roll down the volume knobs..... Most humbuckers lose that clarity when rolling down the volume unless there’s a treble bleed resistor. Sounds fantastic Matt!

The Thin necks I like. The Peter Frampton is another and the reissue of it 3 pickup with thin neck is great in the Les Paul world.

I actually like the bigger necks. To each their own for sure. Fun to try them all! My favorite is that bigger soft V. I had the chance to play one of Paul Kossoff's real 58's. It had that V for sure. Love Frampton too! Can't get enough of his playing and singing. Thanks for watching

Well, maybe. Gibson definitely is not able to make good copies of them. You need to find a good builder who has studied how the REAL vintage LP's were really built, all the tiny details, what glues and lacquers etc. Gibson does not use real nitro, but some kind of plasticized finish thats not hard like real nitro is. Their LP's have completely non-authentic hardware and harnesses on them. You can vastly improve them by changing those out. See my post above about my video series on how to do that, and what vintage parts and harnesses sound like vs what Gibson is doing on even their most expensive Les Paul now. There are several builders who build much better Les Pauls than Gibson is doing, a fact. My 20 year reverse-engineering work on vintage PAF's get super close to real vintage PAF's and you can listen to both and watch direct comparisons of vintage vs my replica work on my channel to see for yourself. Unfortunately I have over a year wait time and I don't mass produce. Anyway, great demo, not a fan of Trainwreck amps, but he was a true legend among independent amp builders for sure.

The true secret of the burst is the amplification…. They had these bursts in the late 1950s and the dealers virtually couldn’t give them away. They were thought of as older jazz guys guitars whom the rock an rollers didn’t like, mainly because their music was so difficult to play and they were old…. ( actually they were only about 40, but you get the picture). Jazz guys didn’t like the often clankly chime and random harmonic overtones of the pickups which distort when you hit the strings hard. If played softly the clarity is unbeatable. Listen to Mike Bloomfield’s records to hear the PAF sound natural…you get that sound in your clips…. Eric Clapton switched everything on full to get his at the time unique sound … the amps were getting stronger by then and the tubes or if you’re English valves, which had a deeper rounded robust sound. Also that was a bit of tease wasn’t it…. ?Kossoffs burst and they wouldn’t let you plug it in.

Mics were into Neve 1073 pres into protools. There was a room mic too. Its still hard to capture the experience of being in the room, but we sure tried. Thanks for asking

The old stuff is too valuable for me, even if I could afford it I'd be scared to play them - much less travel with them. Just got a used Maybach Lester Honey Pie (came with a name!) off Reverb, and couldn't be more impressed, cost less than $2,000USD. The German made "Amber" pickups sound just like a good PAF, clarity like a fat telecaster!
