I started to watch La La Land, and I was so disappointed in the few dancing sequences I saw that I stopped watching.

Lalala Land was boring…stupid & a waste of money to make…..& terrible Casting….the Actors were hopeless…. Shirley should have been an Advisor on the Film

In her primetime, MacLaine was what they would call a triple threat. She could sing, dance and act at a very high level. She also wrote about 12 or 13 books, all of them best sellers. She was into paranormal, Eastern traditions, UFO phenomenon, spirituality (not religion) and always had top, credible sources. The 1986 edition of her very controversial 1983 book Out On The Limb is still in print today and you can get it on Amazon.

@IyaEarthseeds You are so correct. She was a hoofer on Broadway long before she was ever on film. I love to watch her in "Sweet Charity", too, which is one of my favorite musicals. Before Shirley's Hollywood career she was a ballerina, but due to an injury she had to quit.

Shirley's legs are georgous in this performance as you can see her legs are very slender as from her training in ballet. Also, her kick in the air is identical to someone who was professionally trained in ballet.

And she did not think she was the beauty of the family.

Yep...some big legs, everyone tends to forget that this is how she began, (singing and dancing) because of her great success as not only a dramatic actress but also as a comic actress. She's well rounded, literally; as well as figuratively.

Of course, as Ginger Rogers once said, she did everything Gene did but backwards and in high heals. As a man, having to wear high heals makes me respect the women a lot more.

@@rebeccasabet2802--I don't think it's known for sure how that starts, some may have been born that way. In other cases it may be upbringing. Being worshipped like Jesus really makes it worse, that's for sure, because that can make them super-arrogant on top of everything else. Narcissisim is common in movie and TV stars, especially the older ones and their families suffer because of it. Spouses are often cheated on and abandoned and children abused and disinherited. Jerry Lewis' kids used to hide when he came home from work. Shirley MacLaine's child spent her entire childhood with her abusive father and in boarding schools. But after paying for all those boarding schools she wouldn't pay for college or even trade school and put her out on the street (paid for a dump for a couple of months I guess) as soon as she graduated from high school. She paid no medical expenses and didn't want to pay for her daughter's wedding. She and her children will get nothing when Shirley dies. The daughter did nothing to deserve this; how could she? She never lived with her mother. Shirley had very little interest in her grandchildren and maybe saw them a couple of times. Her books are all me-me-me and admit sleeping with married men. When you grow up where these people live and work and do business you meet people who have been around them and their families. And I've met some of them myself. Nobody who lives where they live and hang out gives a rat's ass about getting an autograph or talking to them and the LAPD hates them.

Shirley MacLaine already had two Best Actress Oscar nominations under her belt by the time she did this movie. She was already a star.

@@powerdriller4124 They were both dubbed. I think that they were using some old bit sung by Jeannette McDonald and Nelson Eddy. This dubbing was done for humor and to emphasize the dream aspect of the routine.

I like Paul Newman best as the painter with his monstrous machines with Shirley in her artsy dresses. And it's great when Mitchum gets killed milking Melrose the bull. Hilarious movie.

Pinky Lee!!! The guy who was painting everything pink. 😆 And I love Robert Mitchum (Melrose, forgive me!!!!!). All of Shirley's costumes by the one and only Edith Head. What a talent. I have this movie! It's fun to watch when I need to laugh!
