Genelec win for me, the sound more direct and the bass is tighter

Listened to it before buying 8020 and now. I'm glad I bought it!

I've spend 1 month listening for the best 'compact' ( 5 inch woofer max ) monitors. for my studio 'B' room. And finaly get the Genelec 8030C ! ... incredible sounds quality .. steréo field is amazing, tigh bass response

Do we know what monitors were used to mix the original tracks?

Yamahas tend to be rich in mid highmid and high frequencies and have quite colorful sound and for lows they got a separate woofer. I listened these a lot years ago and for hifi needs are may be quite a good choice regarding price vs quality. The Genelecs are hitec stuff and have better low end resolution and may be better for studio work out of the box.

it seems the genelecs sustain the harmonics in a more natural way. Lower-mid freqs remain longer, while the higher ones decay sooner. the yahama boxes are unnaturally flat (which does not mean neutral). Natural genelecs vs neutrals yamaha

Ambos son buenos monitores, yo tuve las HS5, actualmente tengo unas KRK Vtx6 de las que estoy enamoradísimo superiores a las Rockit. También he trabajado con las Genelec y lo primero que escuché comparadas con las HS Yamaha es que estas tienden a chillar un poc de agudos y tienen un poco menos de definicón de bajos. En las Genelec quizás suena todo más plano pero no tan artificial sobretodo lo notas en los agudos y en los medios que suena todo más claro y definido, con más detalle. Como digo las dos cajas me gustan con las Yamaha hice varios trabajos, con un sub eso si.. pero doy como ganadoras las Genelec. PD- Eso si mis KRK VXT no las cambio por nada jejeje....

Yamahas just sound like they got more mids. Genelecs sound more open to me, clearer and natural. Yamahas just sound more mid heavy that’s is all with less bass. Genelec all the way

I believe you've chosen the wrong Genelec. The 8030c is more in line with the specs of the HS5 (5" woofer). No?

For mixing I much prefer the Yamaha, it will highlight where work is needed. For purely listening pleasure or composing/tracking, something with a softer richer balance like the Genelec sure.

Genelec's sounded very close to original track, which is what you want. Yamahas seem to have very bright high end. You might end up cutting high frequencies on a track when running the hs5's that didn't need to be cut and don't translate well to other systems. Very interesting comparison. Of course best way to tell is to bring these into your own studio for testing and don't rely on a mic recorded youtube video's audio to tell you the full story.

Please try to demo Yamaha MSP5. I believe it will give a tough competition to all these speakers you have high regards here.

Sort of like choosing if beer is better than a milkshake here..Gotta say I'm down with smooth treble balanced w/punchy bass/mid tightness of Genelec overall.

Genelec is closer to the original while the Yamahas seem to add highs. Genelecs are flatter therefore better closer to original to me.

just realised dt250 arent the best headphones to listen to this test :D the difference was a lot more present in hd25s

The yamahas translate mixes well in untreated studios. They do not sound boomy in untreated rooms

Ymahas sound less pleasant and have noticable coloration, I would not prefer to listen music on them. But I'd prefer them over genelecs for final check of the mix for their better details, just like many others use their NS10s

kind of a silly comparison. If one has the money to spare, then the genelecs, adams, focus, atc and behringer's ( :) ) will be among the top choices. I actually like the sound of the hS5 better. get a mix going good on those and the earbud/bluetooth heads of the world will hear the same thing.

You know, the "original track" sounds much more like Genelec 8020 through my Genelec 8020 than the "Genelec 8020".

Genelec far more fidelity, but Yamaha has the defects we'll encounter in home systems (mid bumbs, harsh highs, etc.), that's why they translate in mixes that sounds great anywhere.

No Monitor speaks truth... Every monitor sounds different. Its just our ear training and frequency table understanding. Different song will sound differently in different DEVICE.. Yamaha rich in mid its good sign caz it helps to catch the unwanted resonance. While genelac is good too. Bt pro mixing engineers focus more on mids.. Thts why yamaha Ns10 is still the common piece of cake in every pro studios

I really like the crystal clear hi-res sound and the very detailed mid and high frequencies - as well as the really great top end (go above 30000 Hz) - of the Yamaha speakers. At least can sense a bit of the good sound quality of these studio monitors by listening to this with my Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro headphones, directly connected to my high-end headphone amp Lake People Phone-Amp G109 (which is connected to my Steinberg UR44 audio interface). Finally, I would really like to see (or rather listen to) a direct comparison between the Yamaha HS series and the Yamaha MSP series - because I still don't have listened to both versions together in a store or within one video.

I'm shared between the similarity with the source (genelec) and the miss of mids (Genelec too) that produced a blured sound.

Funny. When I was buyind small studio monitors, I endedup to choose between HS5s and 8020Ds. Genelecs won.

I think some listeners get confused in the overall test reproduction process as this is about truth, the Yamaha has always been the super crappy flat signal doing its legendary work, imagine the source work or music for this test being created at another studio mixed and crossed reference with a pair of classic Yamaha NS10's sent out and used for this test today would mean the $2500 Genelecs sound better than the HS7 because of the source mix, this would be (Fact) because I did a mix on my Yamaha HS8 and cross-reference the mix on my M Audio BX8 and the mix sound better on the BX8's (Thank You Yamaha For Making My M Audio BX8) sound better than the source monitors (Think About This) The same thing could happen with the source material in this test could make the Genelecs shine over the creator NS10 or even the HS7 that bare striking resemblance of its older brother...Oh, yea, I own the Genelec 8040 switching with my Coleman SPK5+1, giving me the flexibility to share this test. I get the same result is the reason I will never part with my NS10's/Genelec 8040 gives me endless sound reproduction possibilities!

we feel a big loss of performance at yamaha the low bass level is very bad and a disaster at the level of high sounds. as a dj I will not take these monitor yamaha even if it is 5usd the pair

If it's not rock, the Yamaha sound pretty decent, though. Maybe less clear than the Genelec but they have more lowmids.
