The Flood - it's spreading, all over the city.

In all of horror, I have found parasites to be the most terrifying creatures you can think of.

For what it's worth, the flood may be impossible to eradicate, but those chest exploding things and face huggers are gonna haunt my nightmares forever.

the trill symbiote is not a parasite. a parasite is not beneficial to the host, that is what separates a parasite from a symbiote. it doesn't matter if it isn't an equal exchange.

One other major thing that adds to the danger of the flood, is their ability to use technology. Unlike most monsters, which go around punching, clawing, ripping, and biting people. The flood have the ability to use whatever tech is around them. Meaning they can fly spaceships, drive vehicles, shoot guns, etc. Which drastically increases their threat.

Well, it is stated a lot of times that the Symbiont (for example the Dax Symbiont) merges with its Host (Lets just take Jadzia) to form a new person from the merged personalities and experiences. Thus Dax and Jadzia become Jadzia Dax, practically a whole new person which is really not just the "menacing worm thing" taking over a person, but rather, well, merging with them. It seems beneficial to both parties involved. Also it is literally called Symbiont as in Symbiotic relationship, which is different from a parasite which exploits its most of the time unwilling Host.

Interesting take on the Trill. I can see that being possible, that they convince others that the relationship is symbiotic when in reality its more one-sided.

What of the Thing from John Carpenter's the Thing? That question aside, you could do a top 1000 list of most dangerous parasites and barely scratched the surface so certain allowances must be extended. Dangerous parasites are something of a trope, but a good trope of which I will NEVER tire.

Goa'Uld at #6? I'm sorry, did I miss the spinoff where Nemesis alpha ENSLAVED THE GALAXY? Only the Flood is even arguably comparable.

To elaborate on the Flood, this is a rough timeline. The Precursors were a tier 0 race that created all existing (civilized) species in the Halo galaxy. They originally bestowed the Mantle of Responsibility unto the Forerunners, but later found their choice species unfit, so they have the Mantle the the Ancient Humans. Angry at this outcome, the Forerunners waged a galactic war against the Precursors, and they were winning. In an effort to preserve their own species, the Precursors, being able to bend the laws of physics with their tier 0 tech, dismantled themselves into a 'dust'. Still sentient, but entirely immortal. Over uncountable years, they grew with resentment, corrupting their previous notions. At this point, Ancient Humanity found a protein rich particulate, and decided that, being so abundant in the local space, it would make a great feed for livestock. Oh, how they were wrong. The sentient particulate began to assimilate the flesh of these lowborn creatures, and thus, the Flood was born. Humanity ran, ran faster than ever to get away from the monstrosities that presented themselves, quickly finding their ships in Forerunner space. They began purging infected worlds, an act of war in the Forerunners' eyes, leading to the Human-Forerunner War. At the end of this war, the Forerunners forcibly devolved Humanity, and swiftly thereafter found this, "Flood," something assumed to be an imaginary scapegoat for the Humans, to be a real threat. The Forerunner-Flood War was in full effect, they tried everything, did everything, studied everything… to no avail. Finally one Forerunner, the Ur Didact, concluded that the Halo array was the only possible plan that would succeed, while the Didact (not of the Ur variety) dismissed these claims, dead set on finding another way. That is until Mendicant Bias, their super AI that controlled *literally* their entire spaceborne military, was affected by the Logic Plague, the Flood's way of infecting intelligent programs. At this point, with all hope lost, the Halos truly were the only way, but first, the construction of another AI, one that could outsmart Mendicant and his hubris. Once the battle of the computers was finally over, the new AI was shut down to protect it's 'mind' from the Flood, opting to continue manually. Finally, the collection and sorting of all species in the galaxy, the firing of the Halos, and the seeding of worlds. With this final act, those whom survived left the galaxy in shame, leaving the Mantle behind, and branding Humanity as, "Reclaimer." Enter, the beginning of anthropologic prehistory and onward. Everything that has happened, and is happening now-onward, is technically part of the Halo lore.

It was Ceti Alpha 6 that exploded, not Ceti Alpha 4 in Star Trek 2.

I can't stop imagining an X-men - Aliens crossover where there's xenomorphs that have mutant capabilities like super healing and teleportation.

The goa'uld of stargate have, once they control target species, space ships, nuclear weapons and other planet destroying things. I think that puts them a little higher than #6.

If you haven't seen it yet I would really recommend giving 'Another life' a watch, it's a really great series but has a couple of space viruses and parasites of its own that would be interesting to hear your take on.

I watched the show on Netflix called another Life . In that show they landed on a planetoid or an asteroid that had breathable air and boron based bacteria or something of the sort . One of the people got sick from the bacteria . Then her spinal cord and major nerves crawled out of her spinal column at her neck . Season 1 episode 3 nervous breakdown .

Also, there’s the intelligent nanites from Greg Bear’s Blood Music and I’m sure that there are a ton more of those. Another hive mind parasite is the Mondravi from Timothy Zahn’s Quadrail series.

One thing to point out about the Flood which is that according to halo lore not all of the Precursor became the dust or powder that eventually became the flood. Some are stated to have escaped the war and others went into suspended animation. I feel sorry for anything that wakes them up.

What about the parasitic aliens that took over the brass of Star Fleet in TNG season 1 (the only episode to be banned in multiple countries because of its violence)?

There’s the X parasite from Metroid Fusion which are kind of like the Flood but more of a slime and can take on the form of any host that was previously bonded with or consumed. Even the cybernetics and certain weapon systems were copied most likely because her suit was made from the shell of a Chozo and therefore biological.

I've never seen medichlorians as a parasite, nor the source of a being's ability to use the force. I've always seen them as a harmless bacteria that as a natural byproduct, happen to congregate in higher numbers in strong force users. This to me, was why the Jedi could measure someone's medichlorian count to judge their potential force ability.

I'm table-top gamer and I play Captain Charles Randolph Stern . The captain of the Resolute a modified Miranda class starship. SOP on away missions is environmental suits and survival gear even if the environment seems safe. As soon as I received command of the Resolute I placed my standard SOP (standard operating procedure). Lots of gamers would call this meta gaming ,I would say common sense. Look at how many episodes of StarTrek went awry because of this. It would be standard protocol by now. My Gamemaster has to be more creative than that .

By definition, parasites and symbionts are different classes of organisms. Parasites benefit from the host with no reciprocal benefit to the host. Symbionts benefit both themselves and their hosts, making them not parasites. Additionally, Worf married Jadzia, not Ezra. When Ezra and Worf tried to rebuild their marriage, they found they were incompatible. Finally, it was Ceti Alpha 6 that exploded shifting Ceti Alpha 5’s orbit rendering it nearly uninhabitable.

Remember in Star Trek: Enterprise season 3 episode "Countdown" where Reptilian Commander Dolim had his soldiers infect communications officer Hoshi Sato withe parasites that caused her great pain to make her give the Xindi Reptilian's the final launch codes for the Xindi Weapon in order to destroy Earth?! I will never ever forget that scene.

The story of the Krell is very reminiscent of a short story by George RR Martin called A Song For Lya it can be found in a collection of his novellas featuring my favorite. Nightflyers. The entire collection is a great read!

The Vang. Check out Christopher Rowley's 'The Vang: The Military Form'. The Vang were omniparasitic and extremely savage. It was part of a trilogy of novels.

A few that come to mind: Immulsion from the gears of war series, Tiberium from c&c, the Borg from Star Trek, Mantrids drone arms from Lexx. The latter is easily number 1 succeeding in taking over all matter (apart from the heroes and their ship) in the whole universe.

Whether it be a film, game, novel or whatever, when it comes to top parasites you have to have Flood at number one every time, even if it's a video about parasites in films exclusively. The Flood is that powerful.
