Hello Jennifer! Nice to see you! Thank you for the great explanation and classification! I belong to Generation X. I believe the main difference between generations is in the different vocabularies used. I think that technologies affect generations the most. It seems to me that age gives a politician some advantage. It takes years to get the appropriate experience and skills.
@Englishwithjennifer

Thank you for watching and commenting, Sergei, my fellow Gen Xer. ;) Yes, good observation. We sometimes use different idioms, expressions, etc. I agree that a politician needs a good amount of experience, but s/he also needs good health. Being the leader of the country is a very stressful job. I haven't hit 50 yet, but I'd be too stressed out as the President! Take care.

Hi Jennifer. According to this classification, I'm a millennial. I think that classifying people to specific groups depends on where they live. I mean what it is true and fact in the US doesn't mean it is the same in other countries. For me, even though I'm a millennial, I coudn't buy a computer and know how to use it until I was 20 and maybe, I'm lucky comparing to people living in countries or regions that aren't supplied with the internet service until NOW. So, it depends. I do agree that music we love the most is that which we listened to when we were teenagers. I've recently watched a report on CNN talking about ageism when a millennial congress woman didn't respect an older one in New Zealand.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
It's very true that classifications can vary from culture to culture. Events shape a generation, and events that happen on a national level can impact those people greatly, but those same events may not concern other people in other geographical regions. Mostly I think it's about parents and children and our ancestors. It's about perceiving similarities and differences. I'm glad the topics and vocabulary in this video will be relevant when you visit news sites like CNN. :) Take care!

Hi Armando. My father's choice of music influenced my taste to some degree. I love big band music, the crooners (Sinatra, Crosby, among others), and a number of movie classics. I like Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, and a few others of that generation. I also grew up understanding WWII from his perspective (a Filipino child). I'm old enough to remember the end of the Cold War and the excitement of the Soviet Union opening up. I went there in my teens. The coming of the digital age was also exciting, and I'm also old enough to look back at some of those slower, quieter times with nostalgia. :) Thank you for watching and reflecting.

Generation X for me too. We were there as the wonderful inventions came to pass: Tape recorders, camcorders, Color TV, VHS players, DVD players, CD players, TV on demand, the Internet, mobile phones, smart phones, I-pods, I-pads, tablets. microwave ovens, hybrid cars, electric cars, and the list goes on and on. Those from Generation X can remember a time when such things were not there. How on earth did we get by?

It's often said that the difference between "will" and "going to" Will use when when we decide something at the time of speaking. we use "be going to " after we have decide what to do . Example : in coffee shope A: MAY I HELP YOU ? B: i'll have a large mocha , please We used will for new decision Now , i have a question... What if i decide to have a large mocha '- faive minutes- before entering coffee shope Can i say " i'm going to have a large coffee"
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. In this context, it's still better to use "will." This is common language we use to place an order: - I'll have a large mocha. - I'd like a large mocha. - Can I have a large mocha (please)? - May I have a large mocha (please)?

Hi Jennifer. 👍The exciting lesson, let everybody not just learn but think a bit too. What I've realized that these "generations' categories" or "shared characteristics" get sorter by hastening the development. I mean what took before say, 500 years by these days technology takes 50 years or even less to develop. 1-Silent Generation - 20 years period. It ends with WW2. 2- Baby Boomers - 18 years. Ended with the JFK era. 3- Generation X - 15 years. The new way of life...people started to move to the cities. 4- Millennials - 15 years. My time for emigration. People wanted a better life more peace in mind. 5-Post Millennials - 15 years. Crazy people. !!!! Well, I'm a "baby boomer" and perhaps that the reason I like the Trump policy and most of the time his view and decision making. I can't tell this about Obama, because I was most of the time totally shocked by his presidency. Fortunately, my children were born in "Generation X" and we have some common but also miles different opinions and thought. That's life, isn't it? Always was like this! So, better if I do not say anything about my Grand..kids, cos what to say? They're not talking much, all the time playing on the apps or whatever. Damn and deaf...😄😄
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and for reflecting on this topic. Yes, many events shape a particular generation. I think the older one gets, the more perspective s/he has. As a baby boomer, you can see the similarities and differences across generations more clearly. Here are two phrases related to this topic: 1) common ground: You and your children have some common ground. (Things you can agree on.) 2) generation gap: There's a wider generation gap between boomers and millennials, not just in years, but also in world views.

I was born in 2005 so I belong to post millenial :) Thank you for your helpful lesson. Ms Jennifer, can I ask you a question? How should I respond to the question "May I go out for just a while?" Shoud I say "Please do" or "Yes, you could"? Actually, this was a question in my English test a few days ago. I went for "Yes, you could" but the correct answer was "Please do". 🤣 Thank you so much. I really appreciate your work. 😘
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm glad you liked the lesson. If post-millennials aren't bored watching me as an old Gen Xer, then I'm super delighted! Ha ha. As for your question, a lot depends on the situation and the relationship between the speaker and listener. "May I" questions are requesting permission. But the way a parent responds to a child is often different from how a boss would grant permission to an employee. A mother might say, "Yes, but just for a little while." A boss might say, "Yes. That's fine." or "Of course. We have a 30-minute break between meetings. I don't need you back here until 1." In my opinion, "Please do" is more of a response to a request to borrow something or do something that might bother others. "May I speak frankly?" - - "Please do." On tests, a short answer often uses the helping verb from the question: Can you speak Spanish? - Yes, I can. Have you been to London? - Yes, I have. So "could" wouldn't have been an option on your test question. "Do" is the helping verb used for emphasis: May I go out? - - Yes, please do. (Please do go out.) >> But it's also correct (though maybe not natural) to say, "Yes, you may."

It's understood, but I'd argue it's not as commonly used as the infinitive. I'm not going to say it's wrong. It's likely not considered standard. Do a Google search for "blessed to be" and "blessed being." You'll see a huge difference in the number of results.

@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I'm glad you're paying attention to grammar. :) Actually, it's okay to talk about "membership" as an uncountable noun in a general sense or "memberships" as a countable plural noun in terms of types. If you Google "KZfaq channel memberships," you'll see search results for the plural noun. In that sense, we're talking about different options on different channels. For example, I currently have three levels or membership -- three types. Your specific type of membership would give you different perks. I've covered countable and uncountable nouns on my channel. It's an interesting grammar topic to reflect on. Take care!

Ha Ha..I am a baby boomer but have only one child who is a millennial. It is difficult to generalise. But regardless of labelling, everybody goes through the phases of youth, middle age and old age. And now with longevity, vey old age or the geriatric phase. In my view, life begins at age 45 when wisdom, understanding and toleration dawns on everybody. But the irony is that most have lost the creative careless energy of the youth in this phase. So Jennifer is in the prime of her life, shooting very professional shorts. Keep 'em rolling...
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Labels run the risk of generalizing. It's good to note the stages of life as you did. "Old age" is being redefined by many who live happy, healthy lives into their advanced years. My cousin is over 90 and walks as fast as I do. She also still drives very well. As for me, I hope to enjoy a fountain of creativity into my fifties, sixties, and beyond! Thanks for the support.

Sorry for bothering u again I promise this will be the last question of this topic "How do we get to know about such adjectives that are followed by an infinitive?" (Becoz it is not given in the dictionary) Plss help
@Englishwithjennifer

Sometimes learner's dictionaries will show examples with the correct grammar. Other times they don't. In this case, you can look for an online list of such adjectives. Here's one. www.grammar-quizzes.com/infinitive3c.html

What a great observation! Especially if one is born close to the boundary separating two generations, the person may have qualities of both generations. My younger brother is an older millennial, so as a Gen Xer, I feel we still have a lot of common ground.

Not all sources agree on the exact dates, so in the end you go with the generation you feel you identify more with. You may have more in common with post-millennials.
