I remembered someone once said We no longer celebrate the quiet life and believe that being rich will achieve great meaning and then your life would be worthwhile. We no longer value raising a family, being there for our children and gardening. We feel shame now if we not a millionaire when we are 30. Very odd very troubling.

As someone who had been living on unemployment income for several years before finally getting a job, I can tell you that money sure as hell makes me happier. Because once you stop having to constantly worry about being able to pay for power, food, rent, and other misc stuff. Having to stop actually save up for a few months if you wanna go out with some friends and have a good time. NO longer having to borrow a bit from family now and again just to stay afloat. In fact, finally being able to actually help others in the family if they get in money trouble. Trust me, money makes me happier. It's not the money itself, but rather the fact that all the depression from the uncertainty and worry is gone. The fact that I could so rarely spend time with friends since most activities these days cost money. All that shit causes a lot of depressing thoughts. People who say money doesn't make you happy, either has never had money problems, the kind that makes you loose sleep at night because of fear of loosing your apartment. Or they are born optimists.

Spent the first 20-something years of my life in a poor household and living like you just described, but climbed out of that whole and now enjoy a comfortable life. Money can't buy you happiness, but it sure as hell can get you some "organic antidepressants" in the form of not wondering where your next meal will come from (and when), how long you can ignore paying which bills before they're cut off, and how are you going to come up with money for clothes and shoes before your kid starts school.

Especially as a generation where the emphasis is on education/information but housing (or even healthcare, gods forbid) seems unattainable, the idea of some kind of shibboleth or the right set of seminars granting you that kind of financial security is one that looms heavily for a lot of us.

I knew plenty like this. It's frustating. One was going to play at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. He told me that in 2019. And after that he'd just start living in Japan, and try to learn the language once he got there. Another I was in a band with was going to be the opening act of one of the most famous bands of my country by December 2019, and ofc by early 2020 live off our by then new hot thing of the moment-band in a van while touring the country. He told me all that in August when he couldn't keep the rhythm at the drums, the singer couldn't stay in tune, and the guitar player wanted to solo in the verse. Another was going to be the next Whiz Khalifa, in 2018, because he dropped out of school and smoked weed all day at his gfs house (there's always supportive gf isn't there? What are all these girlfriends telling them?!). Etc. and many more. I'm honestly at the point where if a guy, (and even some gals!) tells me they have a plan, a dream, a goal, etc. I just run away as quick as possible. Haha, I don't even wanna listen, he could be the next Bezos, but he'll probably annoy me too much for me to notice. I feel like, for some of them, they expect that we the normal people are going to keep them around purely out of the expectation that they'll be "the one" who'll "make it" out of all dudes who say they'll "make it". Not because of their personality or anything. But because of their winner drive. It's like some type of blackmailing, so if you dump them you'll think "but what if they make it? And I'm not there when they do it, and they'll be like *I told you*", but it doesn't matter if they "will make it" or not, that's the problem they don't realise, they are not 'making' anything in their lives, they are just living before the time they have 'made' it, they're just a hero in the first act, that's their whole hook in their social lives. Too many people where I live have that entitlement and greed and futility all over their persona. I might be guilty of some of it, that's how I met so many of these people and know how hollow they are.

Also remember, if a poor person from the west moves to a poorer country they don't magically become lower-middle class and get to stop worrying about that greasy landlord who asks for 10% more every month when you can barely afford running water and food. Sure, way less people have that reality to deal with in wealthy countries but that just makes it proportionally more insulting when you live in a wealthy nation and live in comparable circumstances to the less fortunate of the rest of the world. Even when I finished UK Secondary School (in 2016) there were a not-insignificant-number of kids who legitimately needed the education system just to access a computer on a day to day basis despite the affordability of cheap western technology. Not trying to be absolutely critical or harsh or suggest you're wrong, just saying living in the west doesn't necessarily make being poor different in any practical way, you just get more people around you who don't worry about money saying "money isn't everything" when their dad singlehandedly gets them a brand new car after they get driving lessons on their parents' dime.

Spoons probably weren't invented. They were probably iterated from bowls with handles. Things so apparently obvious are rarely invented, but instead emerge out of perceived necessity of unrelated things. There is still a market for low tech inventions. It's just biased towards the familiar. So it appears to be hard for lone inventors to get anything to market that's too out of the ordinary. And most low tech inventions are produced in large firms. It's still often one guy who invents it, but the company gets the right to production derived from the patent by contract.

@@bradc3381 Isn't it funny how there is this idea that the only social mobility for poor people is in trades? This isn't because of an "income ceiling"; this is because of skilled jobs being taken over by unskilled morons who got their education paid for/job given to them by their parents. Half of the reason why this problem exists is this outdated idea constantly spread by boomers that trades are some magical source of unimpeded income, like when they were young in the 1970s, and they fail to see the inevitable economics of what happens when every 20-something in the same small town invests into the exact same trade. Not to mention that 95% of tradesmen I know are only in it to brag about how much money they make, while spending it all on their daily ration of alcohol and snortable drugs. Oh, not to mention that not all trades are treated as trades by tradespeople. For instance, I spent many years obtaining a degree and an advanced diploma to qualify as a specialist in a specific field, which by the way develops products that are used by virtually every person and business on a daily basis... but since the average tradesman doesn't understand anything about that field, even if they depend on it for their own trade, it is suddenly a "waste of time and money"- but if you had the same trade as them and competed against them for work, suddenly you are a legitimate member of the working class in their eyes. The tradesman fallacy is a real thing, as I have lived it in small town life, and I realized how bullshit it is and how fake those people are when I left that town for the final time.

@@vovin8132 its made worse by what I like to call the "it's winning the lottery, but no one thinks of it that way" issue - if you are a tradesmen doing better than a white collar working who has as many years as you, you are very lucky and NOT the norm by any stretch of the imagination. If you go into almost any upper middle class (or wealthier) community and ask everyone what they do - most are not going to be tradesmen, and most who are actually business owners and not actually tradesmen (they have people who work for them an office, and are basically white collar, etc.). Anyway, on top of that, just like with many white collar workers - you probably cannot make marriage and a kids works if your spouse is not also working - at best your not better off, at worse and more commonly, you are worse off. Of course, plenty of white collars feel stuck because they cannot risk losing their current job in order to look for the new one, and no, you cannot say to your currently employer "do I have permission to look elsewhere and keep working here while I like and get paid and etc." - in most cases where they are not a prick (you work at a smaller company) you are still going to have basically have something lined up first, or have a REALLY good reason (spouse has new job located just far enough away that new commute is terrible, family ties can no longer be long distance, etc.). The system is heavily rigged for the already wealthy, and there is no magic cure for someone beyond a lucky lottery card, of sorts - of course, more of us voting for our own interests instead of because of abortion, taxes or "one day I might be rich, and..." nonsense, but narratives rules over facts and reasons, se we cannot have nice things.

As a freelancer who had some periods in my life when I didn't work, I can tell you that it is depressing. You have to have a reason to get out of your bed every morning, to meet people etc. If all your friends work you will end up chatting with shop assistants in your free time. Look at rich housewives, how bored and neurotic they can be. Or many of the recently retired people. Everybody needs purpose in their life, the feeling that others need you, that others are waiting for you to turn up and to get down to business together. It's terrible to feel that everybody is just going on happily with their business without you.

My dystopia: The trend of big companies monopolizing will continue. Along with this trend, the trend of companies building faculties where employees work, live and sleep will continue. A majority of the skilled workforce will now live on such campuses. They will start to sanitize the behavior of those employees in terms of speech and lifestyle (exercise is required, smoking and drinking forbidden) The work communities will soon develop their own currency in the form of creditpoints that are earned by labour and are used for every aspect of life, from the education of newborns to interiors, food, etc (of course all provided by the employing company) The shift of focus towards one's own work community, combined with a growing disdain for those outside any such community (they are considered barbaric at this point due to the emphasis on sanitized personhood) allows for any solidarity on a state level to erode, allowing neo-liberals to further break down the fundamentals of a democratic system and forms of social welfare efforts, leaving those outside any company structure to fend for themselves. This leads to a survival of the fittest kind of parallel society. One day, to a crash of sorts, these massive companies lay off many of their workers, which causes a major influx into this already scarce parallel society. A war starts to rage between different tribes and newly formed alliances until one day a new cult steps up offering a belief system that is designed hope, but later gets appropriated by those who seek to use it for power and control. For centuries this mutated form of sectarian principles will violently suppress any scientific evidence or ideas contradicting its dogmas, halting any form of progression to be made. This goes on for ages and this time period shall therefore also be referred to as the flightless ages. Until one day some bright minds start to discover what the people of ancient times had to say about things. Slowly ideas of old start to find their way into public thinking. We shall call this period the revival. Etc, etc.
