Well done Manchester Evening News, that's not a citizenship test. That's a general knowledge quiz some numpty came up with after a few down the boozer.

these questions were so meaningless and trivial. They had almost no real practical application to being a good citizen.

I'm middle aged, British since birth, with a degree, and I wouldn't have passed that in a million years!

Blimey! I’m British and I studied A level history and that test was really hard. Can’t see the point in it as most British people wouldn’t be able to answer the questions either!

Many, if not most, of those questions are ridiculous for their intended purpose.

Hi, Jen. That was a really hard test. I wouldn't have passed it. I'd love to see you take the German citizenship test. My guess is that you can't pass it. Generally, citizens of a country can't pass their own country's cit. test.

My wife (an US person) took the test when it first came out and she is now a British Citizen, I would have had some difficulties with same of the history questions as some answers/facts were ambiguous and would have failed I was born here and have A-levels British Constitution and History.

I'd fail that test and I am British.

Well, I knew about 7 answers and I'm British born and bred. I may have guessed a few like you but they are daft questions!

Just tried one of the free sample tests on the website and it was MUCH easier than this one. Some incompetence going on there amongst those picking the questions!

I thought it was really hard too!! I’m American and had lots of history in school, but not where it helped on this test!! My score was pretty much like yours!!!

How is knowing the answers to questions like that supposed to prove your "Britishness"?? Knowing a lot of random geographical and historical facts doesn't give you an understanding of this country and it's modern people and culture.

Hi Jen, Yes that was really difficult, unless you have an interest in history why would you know the answers? Those are the sort of questions you may learn the answers to at school, but then forget it all later.

That just shows you how pointless these tests are. I’m English and you did as well as I did.

You can do the actual UK citizenship test questions on line (the Govt has a recommended site). My wife (who is french) and I played around with them few years ago. For me, I typically get all or all but 1 question right (some are thick questions). My wife without any study, could get 65 to 75 % right, slightly below the passmark. I would imagine almost anyone could pass with a little study and some practice (so long as you can read English).

my wife and I were both born in England 70+ years ago and we did worse in that questionnaire than you. I was a Senior Design Engineer in the space industry before I retired and would not consider myself stupid. I cannot believe that all those totally irrelevant questions can really be part of the real test. None of those questions had any relevance to the real English way of life.

Monty Python devised this test to keep people out of the country and redirect them to Canada.

National Insurance was designed to fund healthcare and pensions, but it doesn't raise as much money as both items cost. Combined the two categories represent around 60 % of UK Govt spending annually.

I'm British and above average when it comes to general knowledge, but when the the first question came up I'd never heard of Maiden Castle, much less where it is. As subsequent questions came up, I got more and more deflated. I didn't realise that to pass a British Citizenship test, it is desirable to have been a member of a winning University Challenge team.

How many Brits would pass this? I suppose, most of them would fail as well.

I don't think any of the history questions were covered when I went to school, though I think slavery is probably covered in history lessons now. Many of the other questions, such as where is Maiden Castle, were pretty obscure and I doubt many native Brits would know the answers. On the positive side I believe that when you want to take the test the government publishes a book with a potted history of the UK and important cultural information and as long as you remember the majority of the info in there you should pass the test.

That was a super hard test. Of course I could have done with more time, you were a bit quick for me. But I didn't do as well as you, and I consider myself good at History. The first question, never heard of Maiden Castle. I have now.

I struggled on a lot of those and I'm British, dates in history have always been a weak point even at school 50 plus years ago. I would probably fail a Citizenship test as some of the questions are ludicrous and irrelevant.

Hi @Jen De Not sure if you're aware of this, but as long as the date of handing in the application is before the 31.12.2020 (have to keep the receipt or some proof of this) a German Brexit law (Brexit-ÜG §3 or something) will allow you to hold dual citizenship. (We have the British in Europe organisation to thank for this amendment!) So, if you really do intend to do it at some point, I would recommend getting it handed in this year.

I am Germam. The only question I knewed was sbout the Beefeaters. I visited the Tower long time ago and had a guided tour with a Beefeater. Ein deutscher Freund von mir lebt und arbeitet seit mind. 14 Jahren in London und hat letztes Jahr den Test gemacht und seitdem auch die britische Staatsbürgerschaft. Aber es ist nicht nur der sehr schwere Test sondern auch die damit verbundenen hohen Kosten, die man dafür aufbringen muss. Ich hab ihn auch probeweise im Internet gemacht und bin gnadenlos durchgefallen 😄 Aber den deutschen Test würde ich wahrscheinlich auch nicht bestehen 🙈

You should've at least read out the correct answers if not all of them. I watched this on my phone and it's too small to read. One question that would be useful to understand is what a criminal offence is.... An offence is anything that's against the law, like speeding, dropping litter etc. Crimes must involve intent (can be lack of care as well as a deliberate act - the difference between manslaughter & murder) to do wrong. A criminal conviction, even just a caution, will get you a criminal record which has lasting implications for job applications, visa applications etc.

Can u hold duel citizenship as German?

Most British people would fail this, like the vast majority would fail. The test is to make it hard to get citizenship. Does knowing this stuff make you a good citizen......no it doesn’t, theres more important things that do and this stuff is simply knowledge people pick up over time.

I'll try to do this too because somewhen in the future I really wanna take that citizen test 😳

So many questions about histoy, I mean you get some general information like you pay tax on your pension, but the sole information of real practical relevance is that you have to rethink you business plan if you wanted to sell tobacco to under 18's, haha

Governments generally and the UK in particular, think they must have some rules and regulations for foreigners to establish UK residency/citizenship legally. They figure that passing such a test to earn citizenship should have at least some degree of difficulty: 1. Because it indicates a willingness of the newcomers to learn a little something about the country in which they would like to live on a permanent basis, and so know a little about that country's history, society and laws both past AND present. 2. Because puffball questions like: Who lives in Buckingham Palace? What are fish and chips made of? (must get the question at least 1/2 correct) What were the names of the FOUR BEATLES? (must get at least 2 correct) Complete this sentence: "GOD SAVE THE ----------- " a. Duke, b. Boris Johnson c. Queen. or d. Beer; do not project the necessary "gravitas" to allow permanent entry into the land of Shakespeare, Nelson, Churchill, Milton, Monty Python and Benny Hill.

Vaisakhi is an Indian celebration.. why does one have to know about that, to get a BRITISH citizenship?

Scottish and not a chance. I know things like Ulster is Northern Ireland but who knows any of the dates, percentages, places, or random names of people? The only history I did on school was William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
