Scree 32 and 3 days of gear to make it the 30 miles home through the swamps of central Florida. It’s gonna suck but it’s doable.

I worked for Smartwool for a couple yrs. It changed the way I look at fabrics for my daily wear. I like their 70 wool /30 polyester blends. First Spear & Stone glacier make great blends of base/mid layers.

For hunting cloths I switched to Wool a few years ago, I now stay warm when everything is wet, Its quiet, and it doesn't get the smells like other cloths do. I picked up the old buffalo plaid for rifle and then I have plain gray or green for everything else.

Im now 1.3 miles from home when at work. If TSHTF, I go out to my truck, maybe, grab a couple of items and walk down the street to home. I may take a slightly circuitous route to avoid the homeless shelter. Less is more in this scenario. And probably the most important items are my CCW and house keys.

Liner socks are a great base layer for your feet. This a lesson learned backpacking/hiking many different types of terrain. I don’t hike or backpack without them. They are an essential ingredient in my kit (light and pack small). I wear them under my backpacking synthetic wicking wool socks. Keeps my feet happy for miles and miles.

Being retired, and living in a rural community, the truth is I'm seldom further than 10 to 15 miles from home. The chances of me needing more than my EDC, are very low. My GHB has some water, a couple of high caloriie bars and hard candy. Two extra mags for my pistol, a small first aid kit, and a topo map of the county and compass.

I would like to add, go through your gear every so often and see what is there. Fundamentally get a pack that's adjustable and fit the bag to yourself, no joke a well fitted pack packed correctly feels 20-lbs lighter than a bad pack loaded poorly. Start with backpacking gear and then what is left over that is all the room you get for mags and tactical stuff. Take your sleeping bag out of the stuff sack, place a garbage bag open in the stuff bag, stuff the sleep system back in and tie off the trash bag with sleeping bag inside. Your welcome, no matter how much it rains on your hike your sleeping bag will be warm and dry. Remember to waterproof your boots frequently. A very large trash bag or rain cover is a must, lighter than a tent but short term will serve a good enough purpose. Your pack and gear should be no more than 25% of your body weight. Trust me, unless you HAVE to go into a bad situation body armor is not what you want.

Good video. To many people carry to much stuff they don’t need. Like 4 knives 8 ways to make a fire and all these cool gadgets they see on someone else’s video who doesn’t know what they are talking about. I have done multiple E and E scenarios in the military and you don’t need much to get yourself through it. Go pretty light.

Bolt cutter might be good for bypassing roadblocks thur one of those gated fenced land lots with no house or shed or anything like used for hunting or farming or just land holding for investment. that can connect you to other road on other side. I have seen lot of those in desert area and on maps. However small bolt cutter is useless if it isn't hydraulic hand pump one, for me battery powered angle grinder is better. In hurricane evacuate road and ditches can become jammed, too full you cant turn around at some spots. If you have time to not drive through fence and damaging your vehicle the lock delete tool will be helpful.

all of this info is 100% right on. Anybody who's done extensive hiking and backpacking before knows a lot of this stuff already, this doesn't just apply to a bug out scenario, but just every day where people who don't actually get out into the woods to do things will never know first hand. As they say pounds equals pain I want to go fast and light, your comfort level will actually be far greater if you carry less. Loved your point about a beanie had and gloves as someone in the north with poor circulation I get very cold ears if it's below 50 degrees lol.

Very good points. Always amuses me to see “get home’ kits that have enough ammo for an infantry regiment and enough tools for an Indy 500 team. These aren’t get home bags, they’re kits for some sort of weird special forces / mcgyver fantasy scenario. Keep it light, be more mobile and therefore get home faster.

I have a get home bag, the only thing in that bag are items to get me home from the 5-8 miles I am away from my house. My “bugout bag” does have a light sleep system, but to be honest, anywhere I’d be bugging out to is within 30 miles of my home. And if shits that bad that I have to leave my castle, you can bet I ain’t gonna be sleeping until I arrive at my destination. Could I if it was absolutely necessary to stop and hunker down for a night or 2, absolutely, but that would in an emergency situation to avoid something life threatening. People seem to think they are just gonna go survive with a backpack forever in the wild, and that just ain’t reality! Point blank.

One of the problems I have come to face is the fact that the furthest place that I work is 250 miles from my home. The jobsite is rural location as well as my home. They are both very very small local county airports within walking distance of my job site, I have thought and worst case scenario, I could possibly slide someone some silver and that would possibly allow me to be flown home. I always carry some cash with me, concealed as well as silver, concealed and credit card if that would be working. I have also been considering carrying my mountain bike, in the back of my truck I am told that a healthy adult can walk 20 miles a day. I don’t think that’s quite correct. I’m not a through hiker. I have figured 10 miles a day on a good day. That’s not with the bicycle that would just be pushing it. What are your thoughts. I would appreciate any kind of insight you might have. Thank you.

Most of my GHB items are in my car trunk in a large bin. I can swap out gear depending on season/weather/terrain/and reason having to walk/ride home. I say ride cuz I keep a folding bike in my trunk (a good idea even without SHTF considerations). A lot of my regular travels take me over a bridge or two. I live in earthquake country; one of them going down is a possibility. I can circumvent them but that is a more than a full days drive in a car. on a bike, you are talking possibly a week. For this reason I keep one of those 2 man inflatable rafts with a hand pump in my car as well. Crossing is much quicker than going around. It’s weight to carry but to me 10lbs of extra weight is worth the time savings. Use a raft and. It an inflatable kayak because I need to bring my pack and my folding bike with me. Weather in my area is mild so that helps with pack weight as shelters are not a requirement. I also carry 2 gallons of water it should be enough to get me home (the waters I need to cross are salt/brackish water. That is a lot of weight but it gets lighter as I go. All my food is ready to eat for eating on the fly. People who pack freeze dried food crack me up. Stopping and preparing food isn’t a necessity, it’s a sign of poor planning. I keep the following items that I see missing from most bags: Caffeine pills -light, small, durable absolutely no reason NOT to have these your pack. A pair of compact binoculars to get a lay of the land I am heading into.

I really like your videos man! I rewatch them over and over again. My question is this. I live in a medium size city in Michigan and I’m not sure if I would be better off with a plate carrier, a chest rig or a war belt. I only have the money to buy one. Which do you think would be the most crucial? Maybe the plate carrier because I don’t live in rural area? I had a heat stroke in the Marines so I could probably hike a little ways in the winter with it on but in the summer I would be way too hot in it. 🤔 Thanks man!

I’m not Uncle Freedom, but my suggestion would be a well thought out chest rig. And I do mean WELL thought out. Make a list of the ones you’re interested in, look at reviews, their pros and their cons. Think about what you would put in yours and where it would go, especially if it’s a chest rig you’re piecing together. Where does your medkit go? Does it have room for your administrative equipment like maps and notepad/etc? How many mags do you want it to carry? Generally, if you can only get one, I’d suggest something that’s capable of more than 3 primary rifle mags, aka not a micro chest rig, but maybe you’re trying to have something more covert, up to you. Do you have night vision? Does that live on your chest rig or is that something that lives in your pack that you may have to ditch? I believe in a civilian context, armor is for vehicle born operations, kicking in doors, or for a defensive position. While defensive position is probably the most likely, still generally, if you’re being shot at, especially by more than one person, you’re kind of screwed anyway. Consider the fact that armor only covers 10% of your exposed square inches of body/profile or less. If movement and capability are your priority, the chest rig is a way to carry that fighting load, with increased capability and reduced weight. Something people often forget is water, and if you ditch your pack which had all your water, how long can you run or fight without it? I keep a Qore Performance Ice Plate on mine (MUCH better than a bladder, especially somewhere it could freeze). And then the war belt, some people have different definitions of. Some “war belts” have a buttpack, some sort of hydration, 4-6 mags, a medkit and a couple admin/utility pouches. Other definitions are a two piece belt with two pistol mags, two rifle reloads, a medkit, dump pouch and a pistol. Personally, I think the rifle takes precedent, since it’s the primary, and whatever you can do to keep that in the fight is the best, so the former definition is my ideal over the latter if you decided to go with that, just know it makes it more difficult to get in and out of vehicles with a loaded out belt than a loaded out chest rig. Ive walked long distances with my idea of a war belt, which I call my sustainment rig, but it does get a little taxing on the hips after a few hours. I’ve been fortunate enough to have the budget for all the gear for all the scenarios… but if I had to pick one, I’d suggest a VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT chest rig for your environment, weapon platform, sustainment needs, covert needs (perhaps something scalable/shrinkable like a split rig? (That’s what I have converted to)), your organizational needs, etc. It’s also generally easier for a chest rig to fit in a bag too, if you were trying to conceal it or get it from one place to another. I’m curious to see what Uncle Freedom thinks about “If you only had one”, but I haven’t watched all of his videos yet, so maybe that answer lies in one of those.

3 things your not addressing in your getting home bag. Distance, weather, physical condition. This could change everything. For example I live in the northwest, lots of rain, now going into winter. Secondly, if you are 50 to 60 miles away from home your not gonna make it with a 20fl of water and a granola bar in a sack pack. 3rd your conditioning or lack of. If your assuming everyone is a triathlon athlete this is far off. I also carry a med kit in my bag. Something also needed to be addressed.

great video as usual, but dude, intros are so irritating. and thank you for addressing the friggin bolt cutters. i cant stand it when people include bolt cutters and shit like that. that is way too ridiculous. i think they are confusing a get home bag with an inch bag. also i dont care what ANYONE says, 500D is perfectly fine for the average joe. unless your really getting in some rough shit, or if its your battle britches, yeah go for a higher number, but 500d is perfectly fine. thats way over built for a bag anyhow.

Get home bag? Gym bag and your EDC. Change into your workout clothes and shoes and haul your ass home. It’s not complicated. Too many people think they’re bugging out back home….😂 More than likely you can just drive home in this very unlikely scenario. For people in the South, a gym bag contains the items used for exercising. Going to the Waffle House is not exercising.
