I had 2. A male and a female. Best dogs I’ve ever had. Lived in the Utah mountains and hiked a lot. These dogs were great energetic, healthy, smart, intelligent and beautiful! Spent a lot of time training them, grooming and socializing. Very protective but friendly. Healthy until around 12 yrs old. Female had a blood disorder, male got cancer. Fed them raw food and bones whole life.

We picked one up when I was 8 y/o and he was just 3 months old. I am now over 50. He was my brother, never needed any training, we had a telepathic understanding. He would not take crap from any other dog, or stranger, but was a cuddling pet with us. We spent hours and hours at the park me and him. Again, not formal training needed and he was my first, and only dog. After him, I had an hard time replacing his spot. I am thinking to get a dog now, finally, after 30 years, but it won’t be a GS. He was too unique, and I don’t want to feel like cheating on him.

I have owned giants for over 40years, while they are not for everyone I was a trainer and a groomer. Even with that they can be a handful but I will never be without one. The extra work they take is so worth the reward of owning one. I have mostly lived by myself and being female I have never been afraid with my giants at my side. Many times they have come to my aide on their own. The love and friendship they freely give is truly priceless.

Nice dog. I remember reading somewhere that the Giant, Standard, and miniature Schnauzers although similar in configuration but different in size, are not actually different sized versions of the same dog. They are separate breeds.

I had a male and female, both out of working lines. Hard coats (much easier to groom) and hard temperaments. The male was protection trained, Schutzhund etc but the female was way too independent and considered unreliable. The male too was a comedian and would make up his own games while playing... .....miss him dearly.

My 3yr old gs is calm. We took him in for training at 4 months old and we don’t have any problems with him. I also use him for pheasant hunting and he is great at it. My gs lays on the couch with me and is very chilled. He doesn’t destroy any of our belongings

I have owned 3 giants. The males are more aggressive as one might expect but overall they make great family companions. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE THESE DOGS MADE FOR APARTMENT DWELLERS. They are working class dogs who need LOTS of exercise. Furthermore if you like feed and forget dogs like labs this breed in NOT for you. The will become your shadow forever . Having stated the above limitations they WILL steal your heart.

I owned a GS. It was a lot of work. I walked her 2 miles per day and played/trained with her twice a day. It still wasn’t enough to burn off all her energy. It was impossible for me to work from home or chill out for 1-2hrs to watch TV. GS are athletic and powerful. These dogs need a job. Not to mention separation anxiety. They are not good pets for 99% of people. Yes, she was loyal and sweet. I have no doubt she would give her life to protect me or the family. I do miss her but would never own another one.

We have a 3y.o. GS female, 80 lbs. American coat, which is soft rather than wiry. She is a beautiful beast! Looks-wise, a stunner. Personality-wise, stubborn, goofy and smart, and loves to work. Just like a lot of folks on this forum, I would not recommend to 99% of people. GS's are not really 'gentle giants'. They are EXTREMELY athletic, task-oriented, independent thinking dogs with potential aggression or at least suspicion around unfamiliar things, even with proper socialization. Yes, they are great around family, but it's not a 'set it and forget it' type of dog who just hangs out and needs one stroll around the block by way of exercise. You will need to keep investing time into training, reinforcement, and daily activities --or the dog can develop issues. On the upside, an amazing natural protector, just like folks here are saying. Still, if you are thinking, sounds great, I will just give the dog to my 8 y.o. daughter to walk with and protect, IMO a potentially terrible idea. The dog is VERY powerful, so unless you are getting a professionally trained GS protection dog, your kid won't be able to physically control the animal when it needs to be controlled. They need a firm owner and proper oversight. I would recommend hiring a pro trainer/doing extensive obedience work if you want your dog to be reliable.

What a story I have. In the late 1990's I started raising, not breeding, standard poodles. Over the last 20 years I have acquired several and belong to a rescue group. I recently was asked to foster a Standard Poodle from the SPCA. This dog was seized from a horrific situation in a rural community about 150 miles from where I live. The creature was shaved to the skin as it had been covered in fecal and urine that was frozen to its skin for weeks. This was in mid Jan. It is now mid March and guess what????? The second coat of hair has come in. It is looking like a pepper and salt Giant Schnauzer. She was severely underweight and looked like a Standard for weeks. She is one of the most fab dogs I have ever met, never mind own. She is funny, smart, stubborn. She is a velcro minded girl and loves her sisters (st poodles). She is fiercely protective, loyal and loves to play. True to claim, this breed is not for a first time dog owner. They need a firm gentle alpha human at the helm. ps she sleeps in the bed under the covers with her sisters. To all that own one of these - boy are we lucky and what an honor to be in their lives. Peace, love and joy!

I have a 5 month old giant schnauzer, he doesn’t get excited easily, he is very composed. He doesn’t like socialization, he just stares at other dogs in the park and play from time to time, he prefers to be around people. He has big time separation anxiety, impossible to be left in the backyard he will destroy, cry, and get mad. He barely barks and he gets very nervous when getting out for a walk or all new things. It takes some time for him to get comfortable with new things. He obeys in public places, not at home though. He goes to day care twice a week and I can work from home the other 3 days but need to give him something to chew that can last an hour. Beautiful breed but you will definitely be hand full.

I have a 7 month old GS puppy. I broke down a few times when he was bout 3-4 months He is very challenging, very stubborn and when is doesn’t get his way he gets mad and bites. A lot of redirections and he only listens when there’s a treat. Yes, he is smart and can be a smart ass! I got him a few puzzle toys but he finish in seconds! I was hoping it will take him at least 30 mins per toy so I can get through my meeting but no… seconds! So now we walk him in the morning so he naps all day and take him to the park to play with other dogs but he only plays with his best friend who’s a border collie & golden retriever mix. He will start his training in a week. Hopefully, the barking, pulling and playful biting will stop. We tried to train on our own but it’s not working lol he needs a professional trainer. He can be so adorably cute, funny, weird & a devil! But we love him!

If you can score an interview with Lee Robinson of American sentinel k9 that could be interesting. I would recommend watching his video's first though. That way you know what your getting into. I want to get a service dog that will provide medical alert services and a personal executive protection dog. I have been looking into getting a Giant Schnauzer, but I would have a cat that is older and would be his house friend. I used to own Akita's, since a Giant Schnauzer is about the same size and more sociable I figured it would be easier to raise and train.

If you’re a lazy person this isn’t a dog for you. You need to be the type of person who likes 5am 2mi runs, preferably male, you need be in decent shape to tame and pull them because they’re strong! You need to have a large space, an apartment won’t do it. You need to be a disciplined person to confidently own this dog. If you can’t handle the Giant maybe get a miniature instead.

I was going to comment but then I thought to just keep my thoughts to myself. However. Seeing how you mentioned the Black Russian Terrier. Breeders have been known to intermix Black Russian Terriers, Bouvier De Flanders and Giant Schnauzers to diversify the gene pool. Slight influence and back breeding can assist with unwanted genetic traits as well as assist to achieve certain physical traits.

As much as I absolutely love this breed - and Standard Schnauzers as well - I know I’m not the right person for one.
