"Physicist Breaks Down The Science Of 10 Iconic Marvel Scenes | How Real Is It?" is the title of the original upload by Insider. After nearly 30 films and a multitude of shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I thought it'd be really exciting to check out this breakdown together and give our unscientific thoughts on it. 🤣
Hopefully we'll get another breakdown after Black Panther Wakanda Forever, The Marvels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, Ant-Man & The Wasp Quantumania, Spider-man Across the Spider-verse Part One and Blade. Surely there will be fun things to breakdown from the new Wakandan tech, Iron Heart and Kang the Conqueror.

The lady he mentioned, she's one of the greatest minds of all time in Mathematics. Her name is Emmy Noether and she gave the Noether's theorem. It talks about conserved quantities and symmetry of action in systems with conserved forces (might not be the apt statement to describe it, might not even be close, I have a very basic understanding of this). The space and momentum correlation could be there as a result of this (whole lot of symmetries, whole lot of them breaking, so very much possible ,a deeper symmetry is conserved giving rise to momentum from pure nonthingness during breaking of momentum conservation. Hell, space expanding itself is creating momentum so having an item that can alter the space can create/stop momentum).

6:32 The arc reactor doesn't emit radiation like a Nuclear Power Plant. It only produce 3 times the energy (electricity) of a Nuclear Power Plant without the radiation. It's renuable energy, like solar, wind or hydro base energy. In Ironman 2, Tony suffers the effect of metal poisoning from the aloy use by the arc reactor, it is not radiation. Like lead poisoning in some communities that had they water suply contaminated by lead product and waste dumped in the water.

I've read his book. "The Physics of Superheroes" In one of the chapters he discusses a lot of the problems with the Ant Man technology and the sheer amount of work that the suit must be doing. For example, air. If you're suddenly 1/100th the size, your lungs aren't really going to be able to process air molecules that are suddenly 100 times bigger. Similarly, the lenses in your eyes aren't really something that scales. If you're even slightly bigger or smaller, your eyes won't be able to reflect light onto your retina the same way and everything would come out blurry. The helmet must be adjusting for that as well. Similarly, the square-cube law. If you increase in size your bones get thicker along two axes, making them stronger with the square of your increase but being longer doesn't exactly make them any stronger; but it does make them heavier. So weight increase with the cube of your size increase. Pretty quickly, your skeleton wont be strong enough to hold its own weight. It's why large animals like elephants aren't just like the design of smaller animals but bigger; their proportions are very different and bones are much thicker compared to their length. I'm sad he didn't talk about any of that in this video.

Exactly. The space stone controls movement thru space. Space and time are related. Tesseract is *not* an invention of Marvel. It is an actual concept in physics that represents space-time - where there are 4 dimensions of physical existence - length, width, depth and TIME. Where each dimension exists at right angles to the other 3. Mathematically time can be understand and predicted in this way. Logically the space stone CAN freeze all movement thru space which is a logical corollary of freezing time. Also with the space stone you can be in more than one place at the same time, and have infinite speed of movement. This is one reason why Thanos mastery of space and power at the beginning of Infinity War *already* rendered him nearly invincible. It's not just a glorified sling ring - IT'S COMPLETE MASTERY OF ALL OF SPACE. Sometimes MCU *is* clever, but American audiences....🤦‍♀... show them something smart, they think it's dumb. And vice versa.

Example: Thanos uses the space stone to separate Nebula's body into dozens of disconnected parts. She doesn't die. She isn't damaged. Thanos has simply altered the physics of SPACE for Nebula. It absolutely horrifies her and Gamora. That's why he does it, to manipulate Gamora. How many viewers actually followed that scene - I wonder?

@@summertyme5748 after going back technically we’re both wrong bc he also uses the power stone on her and not the reality stone.. which realistically.. space stone can only move space matter or “force like kinetic energy” for example he was able to SLOW Loki’s arm when he tried to stab him but not completely move it. so i think he used the power stone to pull the space between her already destroyed body apart.

One thing I think he got wrong is the part in Black Panther around 21:40. He mentions Shuri using a solid emulating sound and a hologram to control the car, but that's not what it is. The solid parts Shuri is interacting with comes from a pool of vibranium sand that can take the form of solid objects, and a hologram of the car itself forms around the physical components. I think they actually do refer to it as a vibranium sand table or something similar at some point in the movie.

Re: the "Iron Man with an extension cord" thing, the animé Neon Genesis Evangelion had a giant version of this in that their mecha were tethered to the city's power grid at the start of battles. Then, when the battle got more intense or they needed more maneuverability, they released the power lines, but the mecha now had a limited time to finish the fight or they would run out of energy.

Regarding the space stone, as an aside: In the book Jumper, David Rice discovers he can teleport. His daughter discovers in a sequel (Impulse) that she can fly because teleporting invariably means you're controlling momentum as well as space. There's a great scene in the book where she nearly kills herself experimenting with this.

10:25 ok here’s the thing. The explanation given in the movie by Hank, is that the suit can adjust space between molecules and thus shrink or enlarge the person or whatever his device is being used on. Now size is not corresponding to mass. For example, take one kilogram of iron and take one kilogram of cotton. Which ones heavier? Answer, both are one kilogram and have equal weight, so you perceived some other physical factor that might have made you answer differently. That physical factor is density, which is how close the particles of the substance are packed. Now clearly size of the substance is irrelevant here if weight is being calculated cuz’ mass aka amount of matter is what that is important in determining weight So statement1: more mass implies more weight and size is irrelevant. Statement 2: more tightly packed implies more density and same amount of matter when density is increased, size is reduced. So if you understood all of that, then you’ll understand the flaw in the movie which is, space between the molecules is lowered and hence density is increased but the mass remains the same which means that the weight of the shrunken object is still the same. So Ant-thony (Antman’s ride) should be crushed beneath Ant-man when he rides it cuz it is still Man-on-an-Ant situation in terms of weight. Hank Pym carrying a tank in his pocket should be impossible!! And great is the number of flaws if you look at it in this perspective. Now this intelligent Physicist in the video tells us that Hank’s device should also be altering mass and thereby changing weight which solves all the problems but that was never addressed by Hank Pym in the movie. The Physicist here talks about Planck constant which I’ve heard about but I know nothing much of, and he says altering its value can alter the size of the particles and I believe here it’s not just size but also mass itself and so that must be included in the movie as an explanation otherwise Antman is not accurate according to physics. But he is still a lot of fun though!! 😜😜😁😂
@changsangma1915
@changsangma1915 Жыл бұрын
I'd make a tangent perspective of how Ant Man suit functions. Its actually a dimension alternating mechanism powered by something (Pym particle..absolute fiction) that allows the phenomenon to take effect. Theres a video that discuss how different plane of dimensions be viewed at a perspective relative the observer native to the particular dimension, say an entity that exist on a 2D plane of existence like a paper will see a 3D object like a ball appear & disappear on the paper assuming the ball can pass through the paper. The ball will start from a single planck point into a circle untill it reaches the full diameter then shrink back down into a planck point & disappear. Now Ant man showed what happens when the mechanism gets tampered & there's nothing to hold its dimension in place so it will keep on shrinking on itself untill reaching the very edge of the micro cosmic existence. He also figured the reverse can be applied making himself bigger (to what extent is not certain) possibly as big as a Celestial or more. The inward and outward nature of spatial dimension is quite intriguing along with the normal 3 dimensional Euclidean geometry of space.

4:33 well I’m not sure how exactly but, if you think about it when you are moving you have momentum but the action of moving can only take place in space. We need space to move. So moving in space equals having momentum. So if the space stone can mess with the fabric of space-continuum then it might have control over momentum. Essentially it was keeping the Loki’s dagger at one place in space, thereby making it seems like its momentum has been arrested.

Steph Sabraw, you can really learn physics if you want to, all you got to do is start from the basics and then slowly build your way up to the more advanced courses. Just take up physics books that are taught to beginners at schools and do some elementary mathematics, and if you are consistent you'll get there some day. Physics is not hard nor is it boring; as a matter of fact it is (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful subjects created by mankind, being second only to mathematics. It is our teachers who make physics boring.

The Spider-Man stopping a train is the most viable of them all to me. If a train is going at a particular speed, if you multiply that speed with the mass of the train then you have the train going at a certain force. The only way this force can be stopped is if an external force is acting on it, sought of like Frictional force. Examples of Frictional force are brakes in a car, if you step on a brake the Car which is going at a certain force is stopped because the force of the brakes act upon it. So Tobey Maguire is sought of an external brake.

2:13 what j is mentioning is how you would generate gravity in real life that is if you want to construct a space station today (using it's rotation to create gravity) such has been shown in several movies including 2001 A space Odyssey however the gravity that is often referred to in movies like Star Trek Star wars Battlestar Galactica ect supposes that they've created a device or devices that actually generates gravity bypassing the need to use rotation, the energy requirement must be tremendous, but then again they've developed the technology / device (that isn't 3/4 of the size of the ship) capable of opening tears in space or folding space so they can move faster than the speed of light.

actually, our muscles are fighting the gravity even if we are not moving. there is certain tension in them all the time. the guards would not start floating at the same rate, but they would loose friction and any movement would make t look exaggerated.

During the scene when the gravity turns off, you have to factor in the biology of the human bodies muscles keeping the body erect against gravity. If the gravity is turned off faster than the human body can react those muscles pressing it against gravity would instantly push the body upward like floating.

Ant-Man makes me angry. The Inmovie explenation is that the "reduce the amount of empty space", which, yes would make you smaller, BUT: A 50ton Tank would still be a 50ton Tank on a keychain. The Ant at the end would be less dense than air and float. Giving NO explenation would be better... to even get to 4 points, he needed to ignore what was said in the movie and add control of mass on to it. Magic ? I am cool with it. Asguardian God Tech ? Cool ! Ironman Nano tech ? Aesome !

@@rahulnair5985 .....a different explanation will be that Ant Man suit is a dimension alternating mechanism, which has special feature function that distribute/concentrate effect of mass on a fist while punching someone being ant-sized. That would explain why he can run along the pistol but able to land a hard punch on a guy.
@rahulnair5985
@rahulnair5985 Жыл бұрын
@@changsangma1915 well even if that is the case, even if he is somehow able to change the distribution of mass, the overall mass still remains the same unless and untill its radiated out as energy.... so if thats the case I still don't think he will be able to run along the pistol and land a punch on the guy. The only explanation that I can think of is that he converts his mass to energy stores it in the quantum realm and converts back and forth on will....which is not what we see on screen.Also concentrating a huge mass/energy in quantum realm might eventually turn into a black hole.

youre right about the artificial gravity, as far as i know centripetal force creates a centrifugal effect that is basically gravity, it can be seen in a few space movies like the martian. i think the dude in the video was confused because when they pressed a button the gravity was "turned off" immediately and realistically the ship would still keep spinning until they braked, by accelerating in the opposite direction
@changsangma1915
@changsangma1915 Жыл бұрын
Cant believe even you did the classic mistake of straw man logic about gravity as nothing but some centripetal mumbo, No. Current studies still cant suggest what exactly makes up Gravity itself but could only mimic a similar effect with spinning motion....doesn't mean that's actually Gravitational force. The sci fi movies imply its like a energy that can be harnessed if its properties are fully understood....only problem with fiction is some super machine can generate this energy that can be switched on/off at will.
@darkceptor44
@darkceptor44 Жыл бұрын
@@changsangma1915 thats what i meant by "basically" gravity, i never said it is actual gravity. but yeah most movies will imply that, except for the martian in which they slowly start to spin, they never implied theres any machine. at most they just made up fancy words while doing it, which isnt the end of the world.

2:41 he did say ‘stay’ but there would still be a little floating cuz’ even while standing our body is pushing the floor to counteract our weight so as soon as the gravity is turned off we will rise up a little from the floor at a slow speed but also no gravity to bring us down so we’ll still continue to fly away from the floor. 😜 To better understand what I just said imagine an extreme case like a man dead lifting some 100lb. You can see the weight is pulling the person down and the person doing his best to stand straight on his feet and right at this moment if the gravity is turned off the weight is no longer being pulled down but the man for a moment would still be doing his best to keep standing straight, so he would be shooting off of the floor, and to add to that, he would be literally shooting of the floor like the people in that scene, as he is exerting more force on the floor than what he would if he were just standing carrying just his own weight. 😊

Weight and mass are two different things. Mass: the amount of material an object or person is made of. Weight: The force of gravity being applied to an object or person. For example, I “weigh” 178lb, meaning gravity is applying 791.8N(newtons) of force on me(cuz gravity is a force. However, my mass, using Fg = mxg, would be 80.8 kg which means my body is made up of 80.8 kg of different materials

11:56 how much mass there is in a particular thing does give us some idea of its strength but you can have lighter stuff which can be more sturdy and rigid just because it has a structure that can withstand whatever we throw at it. 😃 Shape of things, orientation and geometry is studied because that helps in determining Strength of Materials (literally the name of one of my engineering subjects). 😊 For what other reason do you think Scientists are now looking into origami? 😊😊 But yeah the suit is supposed to be heavy!! 😂😂 Movies are just movies. Some things are allowed.

actually captain marvel was traveling speed of light all the time when she was traveling to different planets and systems. she absorbed light speed engine that created by marvel ( the old lady shown in the movie ) using space stone. so that alone simply means its a power that let you or a object at speed of light. also you can see in the end of captain marvel movie she pushing the space station skrulls were into light speed. so if we apply same mechnics of light speed travel, she travels at that speed plamet to planet or a system to another system so technically even if there is 20 or 30 years passed in earth she would probably get affected under 5 year or even lower that passed
@summertyme5748

Again the space stone might allow you to move thru space by warping space. The extent of Danvers power here is unclear, but conceptually - she could travel anywhere in space regardless of speed. PS- I think she just does not age rapidly because of space stone and or Kree genetic engineering. I also think it was originally implied that she is radioactive and gave Maria Rambo Cancer because of it (see Wanda Vision). However MCU continuity has quickly gone to ruin because the new writers don't even seem to understand the previous chapters in the story.
