I was 47 when I started the NLP. I was 50 when I hit the 500, 400 (500), 300, but the 200 took me FOREVER. I finally got it at 56. I'm 57 now. I tell my friends and adult kids who train with me that squatting 315 is totally attainable by any adult male who is not disabled and under 70. So far, none of them have come anywhere near to hitting that because they aren't consistent and/or quit.

I can remember lifting 3 plates off the rack the 1st time. I felt a little shaky. Now it's a warmup.

I'm 62, 6'1" and170# and I just finished my 6th week of NLP. My 1x5 DLs are 260 and I'm still going up 5# per workout. And yes, people, I'm eating 4000+ calories per day. (I'm not sure why people say it's hard. I could easily wolf down more.)

I'm 61, 6' 250lbs. Stumbled upon Starting Strength in 2020. In three yrs I have managed for sjngles: 455lb deadlift, 380lb squat, 280lb bench and a 185lb press. I never lifted weights like this before. 2024 goals are 200lb press, 315lb bench, 405lb squat and possibly a 500lb deadlift. These will be singles. Looking at my current PRs these numbers are attainable.

Just did my first powerlifting meet (US Strengthlifting in Portland OR) at age 46, 5 ft 11, 252 lbs. got a 1335 total. I found starting strength about 3 1/2 years ago. Long runway ahead I believe. I have a starting strength coach and prioritize strength as critical for long term well being.

So I am chiming in really quick, just turned 52, I am 5'10" and 225 started lifting a year and a half ago to rehab my entire body after pectoral repair surgery and a looong break from lifting (10 years or so). I long ago got the stamp on the bench when I was younger and really do not do it now, I do Incline though and it has gone up decently high (270x3x2), Squat has had its ups and downs (juggling volume and recover is tricky) but I have hit 450 x 5, and my deadlift is not as big as it once was but I have hit 500 x 5. My press though is more now than it has ever been as I hit 225x5 two weeks ago. I had a guy at BJJ ask me how in the world I could be getting stronger after taking so long off and being so old (I am drug free) and I told him I honestly do not know past following some basics you teach in your book and in practical programming and endorse in your videos. I do try to ensure good sleep and nutrition much more efficiently than I did when I was younger and I pay attention to recovery. I think your principles to training are as solid as it gets for new people or people returning to training. Given my progress on especially the press, it seems the Texas method is a very, very good intermediate program as well.

For me I've found this year is where I've focused my efforts in getting into lifting properly but not stressing to be huge or anything, just happy with what I'm lifting & looking after myself in the bargain. All UK metrics Currently 11st in weight Just some examples DL - 140kg (Not Currently Focused) been off it a while Squat - 117.5kg for 2 reps Bench 65kg for 3 reps - weakest area by miles Rack Pulls & RDLs 167.5kg for 2 reps Row 105kg Leg Press 365kg for 3 reps Hip Thrust - 220kg for 3 reps - Suggested to do it Sled 332.5kg For now happy with where I'm going & I know when I'm older if still strong feel I'm happy with where I'm going.

Agree 100% with you. I have never ever found the strength gained from the bench press helped with everyday life or other lifts. Good luck with your strength journey!@@montynorman7114

Been on the earth for around a half century and working out for around 38 years. Still hitting good numbers and will run people half my age out the gym. Ain't nothing like outlifting guys half my age. 🤣🤣

i am 47 - startet with 38 on Powerlifting. Last IPF Masters Em i liftet (my best Competition so far) 320 Kg Squat 190 Kg Bench 290 Kg Deadlift . Genetics are the key to really high numbers but with consistency over time it is possible to get really strong. And of course the understanding that recovery and the right volume/intensity will help a lot ;)

I'm 51. Started powerlifting at 46. This year did a 262.5 (579lbs) Squat, 160kg (352.8lbs) Bench, and 279kg Deadlift, all in IPF competition. BW is 230lbs. I believe we can still improve Strength, albeit a lot slower, due to recovery. Can't put on much/if any more muscle ..just maintaining but def. Strength increases

50 and pulling 500 was doable...but sometimes those little bitchy facet joints get empowered and decide I won't be walking for a few days. Age definitely matters not only in recovery but also accumulated deleterious effects. I'm wise as hell now but it came with limitations.

What kind of numbers should a 50 year old, 5'6" 160# lifter expect? I keep seeing guys well over 200#, but what about smaller guys? Before you ask, I have always eaten a lot, but I have no interest in being much heavier than I am, just want to be as strong as I can be at my size. Thank you.
