Covid restrictions on travel meant that it was about time to do a proper tour of this wonderful island that has been home away from home for me. I started with the South. This tour took about 16 days to complete for a total of 700 miles. Blessed with some unusual dry weather but challenged by freezing temperatures while camping at night, it covered some of the best sceneries and cycle routes of southern England.

Thanks all for watching the Premiere. I just was curious to try it out... KZfaq quality of videos is usually much better after a day or so. I found my video not of the best quality at times but it should improve soon. For those interested in the route I have shared pretty accurate GPX of the route I took and can be downloaded from www.bromptontraveler.com just follow the South England on a Brompton link and they will be there.

What an inspirational tour and excellent filming of some very pretty areas of southern England. I laughed at the dogs on the boat (thought they were all going to start a fight!) and the woman in the parking kiosk (straight out of some sketch show), and the friendly lady directing you to their village bench! Thank you for sharing Gianni, lovely 45 minutes I shall come back to again and again :)

Thanks again! Yes the dogs were funny. It isn't heard clearly but the captain on the boat said "I must tell the port authorities. Today, 10 people, 18 dogs." :) Happy you enjoyed it. I was blessed with 2 weeks of almost full sun which is a very rare event in the UK. Thanks

Thank you Gianni. Super. Many of the places you filmed are familier to me.. and, guess what? You passed within five minutes of my front door! That is, near A25 @ Guildford.. I will check the gpx file. Thanks again for a view of some very out of the way cycle routes. Ride with care, please. Oh, and don't pitch quite so close to the cliff edge... especially NOT on the Jurassic Coast! (Seriously. If you bang a peg in too hard, a piece of England the size of a street of houses will fall off!)

If I had known I would have been most pleased to warm up with a cup of coffee or tea! I did cycle Surrey Hills and was not too far South of Guildford if I remember right... Somebody had warned me about the Jurassic Coast falling off under people's tents or while they are trekking or taking selfies! Still it is hard to resist those few times you get a chance to put a tent into such spots.... I was treading lightly. :)

Just fabulous. Thank you. Surrey and on to Winchester a real treat. A pity about the retreat of the railways, though long ago now. But the paths are such a treasure and allow us to move through the countryside on 2 wheels and see so much we would not have access to otherwise. The video really captures the beauty of the ride.

Most kind. Having lived in England for two decades, despite having cycled a lot in the South I had never really used those Sustrans routes and disused railways. Glad it was helpful! They are really strong bikes with strong wheels that can cope with bad roads and gravel. Saying that bear in mind that with rocky surfaces the small wheels make it harder to have a stable ride. On smoother gravel as you have seen in this video it has no problems at all.

Most welcome. It was cold and COVID and the fact that I couldn't warm up inside cafe or restaurants made it harder but the good forecasts for that period made up my mind and it was worth the discomforts. Ah, this definitely sent me to my happy place 😀 with two of my loves: Brompton touring and Cornwall! It’s been far too long since I went there. I’ve just today finally got round to changing my drivetrain to give me -12% reduction on my gears, so hopefully will attempt some hillier tours this Summer. If you do more UK touring I would heartily recommend Sustrans’ Coast and Castles route up the Northeast coast. I did it a few years ago on the Brompton with standard gearing and loved the flattish terrain, sparsely populated area, and fascinating history.

Thanks Trevor! I do remember a little walk too on that part.... Some of the gradients on the trip and especially in Cornwall, were far too steep to cycle all the way; A lot of them I wouldn't have made even on a fully loaded touring bike with 30 gears! There is always a bit of fiction on the video as one tries to show the scenery as well as the ride on the bike itself. Saying that I have 6 speed 'reduced option' on my Brompton which makes a lot of the climbing still possible. Cheers

@@BromptonTraveler I was thinking of doing a cycle tour at this time as well, but although the forecast was dry and warmer for the days it was still very cold at night 0C or below so I bottled out as I am a light weight. I'm not keen on cycle touring and camping when it's cold at night as I don't seem to be able to get my clothing dry for the next day's ride and that is a serious bummer imho. Plus riding when It's warm and the sun is out is so much more enjoyable, trouble is on this miserable island that is the Uk we typically only get 3 days of a true warm dry summer each year. Well done for camping out it must have been brrrrrrr ......... cold.

@@alexmorgan3435 That was the hardest thing. What made it harder though is COVID as I wasn't able to get into a warm place to eat or a coffee place to have breakfast in the morning and warm up if needed. Still I felt I should make the most of the dry forecasts which turned out to be real! Some clothes were a little damp in the morning due to temperatures but once the sun was out it didn't take too long to feel comfortable and dry for the rest of the day. Many thanks.

Thank you for this beautiful video! It brings old memories up. How nice to view this part of England in spring time. Together with some friends I traveled around by train in Europe in June in the mid seventies. After spending a few days in London we decided to head for Penzance. I will never forget the overwhelming impression of the green hills in Cornwall during those early days in June. We felt like traveling through a continuous gigantic golf green. The spectacular sight of the Whiltshire white lime stone horse carvings, which we had never heard of, made us question if we were maybe hallucinating. Penzance was a lovely place. The youth hostel management practiced the somewhat odd habit to shut of the water and electricity supply at exactly 9 PM, which was OK with everyone - if you were not in the mid of taking a shower. St Ives on the other side of the Peninsula was also very nice. What about the Scilly's? You were not far away from them. I think that by now you have proven, once and for all, that no road conditions are to coarse for a bike with small wheels.
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
Great to hear it brought back good memories. All the places you mentioned and this trip in general was going through some of the best parts of Southern England. Cornwall is best appreciated for the scenery than for the cycling as it is a constant rollercoaster and roads are often a bit on the steep side. Didn't make it to the Isles of Scilly, I needed a boat for that or a swim suit. Great to hear of weird hostel practices. I bet they still keep the tradition going? Many thanks.

Thank you, I think environment sound is really nice but often when riding it is hard to get a good quality recording. Wind is usually far too noisy and distracting but I do try when possible to put in some ambient sound that I record in places. Thanks!

Mr. Brompton! Another super video, and finally lots of roads and tracks that I’ve cycled! I had many opportunities to perfect my puncture repair process in the New Forest! Did you get sandblasted in Bournemouth? It must have taken ages for you to edit out all the rain and edit in all the blue sky! Super video, thanks again!
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
You are lucky, some beautiful cycle routes down South indeed. I only had one puncture the whole trip and it was a thin thorn I must have picked up somewhere but it happened near Tavistock and not in the New Forest despite riding lots of trails that cut through it. No sandblasts or need for weather to be edited out! Just 2 weeks in a lifetime where there is hardly any clouds or rain :) Very chilly nights though but it was worth it. Cheers

Hi Lynne I have been a little lazy on distances and although I had a daily plan I never really made an effort to add up mileage! I would assume around 700 miles in total. I have uploaded GPX files on my blog and if you download them you can work out distances. Time take was 16 days but 2 of those days I rested at a friend place in Cornwall, so 14 days of riding. Many thanks.

Thanks Jack! Some AirBnb were luckily open! I could use them for 3 total nights. 2 nights I was at a friend in the middle of the trip in Cornwall so I brought 2 powerbank batteries which were just about right to keep me going. Hi nice video again, super duper relexation wathing your video. Well done and good job my friends. Next video can you show some video to us how you deal with dog attack during your tour. Thanks mate
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
Many thanks! I will think about that, but ideally, I would need an aggressive dog I can film...:) I do have some experience with dogs as in some places I have been they were a frequent encounter ( Sri Lanka, Thailand, Morocco ). What has always worked for me and my advice is the following: Downhill, when you are 100% sure that you are too fast for a dog to chase just keep going and outpace the bugger (If dog is ahead and extremely brave and you feel you might be in danger of a fall don't go for this strategy!) For all other occasions when a dog would have a chance to get you (uphill but even on flats with all the weight of touring), as soon as you spot signs of aggression slow down and stop ignoring the dog and walking with the bike between. Dogs chase to protect their patch but also enticed by the spinning of wheels! Once they see you are stopping and simply walking away from them they loose all interest. Cheers

Hello 👋 I just saw your video and two questions arose : Actually what size of handlebar do you use and why : Mid or High ? And I saw you carry the standard mini pump of Brompton on your bike.I thought you are using a better quality mini foot pump,aren‘t you ? Do you carry two pumps with you ? I think with the standard one it‘s very hard to inflate the tube to the recommended pressure,isn‘t it ? 🤔
@BromptonTraveler

I use Brompton M size which is the higher. I always carry a lezyne pump (you’ll find a review on the channel) Brompton ine as you say is just good for emergencies but doesn’t pump tyres enough.
