People & Places: The 98-year-old studio with rare photos of Nkrumah, Akufo-Addo's family, others

It’s a 98-year-old Photo Studio established by a Ghanaian; J.K. Bruce Vanderpuije. At 23 years, he began making memories with his camera, and throughout the years till his demise, he captured so many big Ghanaian events and stories including Independence Day, Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah in his hay days, and others.
In this edition of People & Places on GhanaWeb TV, we take a look at Ghana’s oldest photo studio; Deo Gratias, and memories in there that have been built over time.

My Mom worked here when she was 16yrs old in the 1950's for her uncle. Wow, Deo Gratias studio is till alive and going. It is a landmark in Ghana.

Very influencial but educational at the same time. I am A diaspiran, and I do known that many slaves or captive were taken from there to the Caribbean island lands in the western hemisphere. But it's a very painful and hurting history that can not be forgotten ever. We are still feeling the pains today. We are looked at as foreigners by the colonial government systems of Ghana and other countries in Afrika. Keep doing a Good and bless work my little sister, it will pay off.

This interviewer is very good! She's intelligent, articulate and very thoughtful with her questions. She also gives the interviewee the space to speak and gently steers them back on course if they digress. Just beautiful.

Absolutely fascinating episode. This is one place I would love to visit several times when I come to Accra/Ghana, God willing! The guests on this show are all lovely, brilliant and model citizens of their great country, Ghana. Ms Wonder, the young but matured, gorgeous and intelligent host of the show knows her craft very well, I am optimistic she will one day in the near future find herself at high places in her country. Yes I met Mr. Vanderpuje in the early 60s. My brother was an apprentice of that studio.

GhanaWeb TV, you are doing very good work and I love most of the documentaries. However, it appears your Advert labels almost take about a third of the screen obscuring the main videos and pictures. Are you able to minimize the size of your Advert Caption labels to bring out more clearly the subject matter? That would be great. More grease to your elbow. I love the interviews very much. Keep it up.

That’s always the case “you never know what you have, until you loose it”; unfortunately we do not have or show proper interest in Art. And the Studio did not attract the Youth as it should. If there was Popular Music blasting out every day, Esther and her friends would have been spending time inside!

Why we dont have all this in the history books Expercialy the GAADAMGBE history what this man is saying a lot of dosen't anything about what he is saying JAMES TOWN. I will be happy if he and other GAADAMGBE historians will come together to write the history of the GAADAMGBE PEOPLE. This will go all the to other regions also to write their history. Every region we have in GHANA have got HISTORIAN why they dont come together rewrite our history. And all th his historians are getting older ,do we sit down and let th them go with this reach HISTORY we have in GHANA. I have this same program where the chief of.ANGLOGA when he also give full details about the people of EWE , THE VOLTA REGION. THANKS FROM BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS

Did Mrs Tamakloe saying that late Kwame N’kruma sent Mrs Tamakloe’s father to abroad to learn photography ? Whoa ! I thought the man was visionary back then but not at all. Anyway ! Asia or Chinese wouldn’t ever do that. What a waste of time ? Well today 21 st century , they give scholarships to study philosophy abroad. So no black as lawyer to représente Akuffo Addo and his father those days but a white British lawyer. They sold Ghana already as they sold their brothers and sisters to them. Pffff !
