Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage) interrupts a mugging and tries out The Penance Stare, the ability to make the mugger (Peter Barry) feel the pain of all his victims.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When a motorcycle-riding stuntman offers his soul to Mephistopheles in order to save the life of the one he loves most, he is forced to play host to a powerful supernatural entity whose flaming skull visage strikes fear into the heart of his enemies in this feature-film version of the long-running comic series. By day, Johnny Blaze (actor and comic-book devotee Nicolas Cage) is one of the world's best-known stuntmen, but when the sun goes down and he is in the presence of evil, the death-defying daredevil bursts into flames to become the indestructible, motorcycle-riding antihero known to the world as the Ghost Rider.

I've always loved this scene. "Your soul is stained by the blood of the innocent" is a very powerful choice of words. It always gives me chills when he ends it with "feel their pain"

Well he is a demon that use to be an Angel called Zarathos who was one of the angels called the spirits of vengeance created by God himself to bring Justice to humanity until he was deceived and captured by Mephisto and became corrupted.

If this movie and the sequel had more of Johnny actually speaking whilst in Ghost Rider form, I think the movies would have been a lot better. This scene is fantastic and exactly how Ghost Rider is.

Just to explain something, the Penance Stare forces you to live through ALL the pain and misery you’ve caused people throughout your entire life. If your sins are so much, it will actually destroy your soul, leaving you a desecrated corpse. However you can avoid the penance if you are blind, have no soul, or draw power from pain.

This makes me wish we could've seen Robbie use the Penance stare in Agents of Shield. It's one of the most emotionally damaging things to use on a villain. Making them suffer for all the wrong they've ever done, even if it was something minor.

Robbie didn't possess the stare in the books at the time so it wouldn't make sense for him to perform it in the show. He's performed it now though due to the avengers comics

@@joshuacarpenter7447 Well the reason he couldn't in the comics is because Robbie isn't possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance. Only the true Ghost Riders have that power. He's possessed by the spirit of a person, so his powers are similar, but not the same. In the show it's different. In the show he IS actually possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance. So he totally could've used it.

@@kin4386 Nottttt correct, you do know Zarathos wasn't originally a spirit of vengeance either right? He didn't get acknowledged as one until the origin retcon. In Robbie's case, Marvel's so inconsistent with their treatment of GR that they forgot that Robbie and Eli are just as real as Ketch and Kale are, as Kale use to be a human too before he got transformed into the angel of death. Doesn't matter if the show was different, he shouldn't have been performing anything he hadn't used in the comics yet

@@joshuacarpenter7447 Couldn't you say Zarathos was an Angel who BECAME a Spirit of Vengeance though? Because either way Zarathos started off as an otherworldly universally powerful being. Eli wasn't. He was originally just an ordinary human, and therefore doesn't naturally have as much power. You could say Eli is someone who used rituals to turn himself into a Demon, but that's not really the same thing. Zarathos is an Angel who could rival Mephisto in power and became a sort of Spirit of Vengeance, Eli was a human who became a demon. Again, similar, but not the same. That would be my theory as to why Robbie can't use the penance stare. I might be wrong but that's the info I'm getting.

@@kin4386 No, because Zarathos being an "angel" was some nonsense the films made up. Eli doesn't have to have started as something else, as I say again, it's no different from Noble Kale. Noble Kale was a human before becoming a GR spirit. Eli was a human before becoming a GR spirit. There's nothing different there other than Marvel forgetting their canon.

Funny enough, way back then people were kind of theorizing that every Marvel movie, Pre-MCU 2008, were all secretly in the same universe. Maguire's Spider-man Cage's Ghost Rider Jane's Punisher FF & FF'S Rise of the Silver Surfer Snipes' Blade Bana's Hulk Affleck's Daredevil The X-Men All set unknowingly established together in the same universe. Sorta of like an early proto iteration of the MCU. Would have been pretty cool.

@@kungfumaster51 , it was, even in the spider-man 1 novelization, there was matt's dad about to be mugged, only to be saved by spidey, and young matt called spidey a daredevil, which is pretty ironic cause that's the name he uses, later. and thomas jane's punisher was seen walking, while mary jane was running out of the wedding to go to peter in spider-man 2 movie.

The Penance Stare would work on almost every horror villain you could think of.. the state isn’t about making them relive their moments of committing the acts, it’s about inflicting them with the SAME pain they dealt out to the innocent.. so every little thing that Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Chucky, Pennywise, Pinhead, Jigsaw, Leatherface, Ghostface, Creeper have ever inflicted on their victims.. would be inflicted onto them. Either way, Ghost Rider doesn’t need the Penance Stare to defeat mere child’s play.

I remember watching this as a kid and I fell absolutely in love with Johnny Blaze and Ghost Rider. I loved it so much that I wanted this kind of power. A part of me wishes that Nicholas Cage returned as Johnny Blaze in the MCU, because we already know it was Johnny who gave Robbie Reyes the power of the Ghost Rider. I would’ve also liked to have seen him team up with the Avengers or at some point the Avengers would fight him.

It wouldn't work. The Penance Stare only works on people that believe they have sinned. For example, the Penance Stare wouldn't work on Deadpool because he genuinely believes everything he does is because he's doing good, whether for him or others. In Thanos' case, he genuinely believes he's doing the right thing, so he'll have nothing to repent.

The penance stare in my opinon is one of the best use of judgement ghost rider can literally see all the wrong you did in your entire life and turn all your sins against you and basically burn you from the inside out based on your actions. @@rexflamevermillion5527 Yes, it worked on Thanos but Thanos gets off on the pain. The stare can be used to punish or it can be used to kill, Frank was only using the former because he was out of his mind. Soon as he regained it, he went with the latter hard and killed Thanos with the stare
