You might be surprised Nickolas, I've seen quite a few men beaten by swordfish over the years, they're the hardest fighting fish in the ocean.

Matt, of the many years I`ve watched fishing shows yours without a doubt is second to none...There are lots of good ones out there but no one goes to the extreme quite like you or gives the detail like you...With that being said, this is the one adventure that was incomplete and cut short due to the Mako...I would love to see you complete a full fight on a handline with a Sword like you did with the Bluefin Tuna and I`m sure all your fans would love to see it also.

AWESOME footage!! Glad the fish went to feed a lot of families, :o) I caught a 600 lb Pacific Blue Marlin, off the Marshall Islands, back in the 70's. I sold about 60 lbs, and the rest went to feed the starving local families, there as well. Thanks for posting!! Sully

Cheers Francisco! The boat is a Stabicraft MWS 1850 centre console, and goes by the name 'Salty'. It's a fantastic platform for all sorts of fishing...

Mako's are under a bit of pressure here from commercial long lining operations, so would have been a bit irresponsible to try and take the shark as well. Also, given the size of our little boat it would have made for one long slow steam back to shore with about 1 tonne of men, shark and swordfish on board!

Good question, we had actually just ran out of tags (we'd tagged and released a smaller swordfish that morning plus a number of other fish in the days leading up to this attack). We've tagged plenty of makos over the years to aid with research as they're a species that is particularly susceptible to pressure by commercial longliners.

The swordfish was shared amongst at least 12 families, many of whom could not afford to buy fish, especially swordfish which is very expensive. We also cut a chunk and gave it to the shark. The shark would not have eaten even a quarter of the swordfish had it been left there.

You say tom-may-to, I say to-mar-to. You say may-ko, I say mar-ko. The word "mako" actually comes from the Māori language (the indigenous people of New Zealand), so the pronunciation mar-ko is actually correct.

The Mako always attacks the tail of its prey first to demobilize it, so the bulk of the meat in this sword was still perfectly fine. I've got a piece left in the fridge still if you fancy popping around for a bite, it's the best tasting fish in the ocean!

wow, thats a kick ass mako Matt ......awesome underwater footage of an amazing apex predator. Dont think Id like to be in a smaller boat than your stabi with that sucker cruising around. Great work as always guys. Be cool to see some footage of one jumping...only seen it once and they seem to come up straight as a poker.

That's probably a record-breaking Mako Shark. Since it already expressed an intense interest in the Sword Fish, and took a bite already, I would cut a chunk of the Sword Fish, stick a hook in it, and throw it back out there to catch the Mako Shark. Then I would have the shark mounted.

I assume you aren't going to mount that and eat it. Swordfish is one of my favorite fish to eat personally, marinated for a few hours in tamari, lime juice, and chili-garlic paste then grilled to perfection and served with summer squash or asparagus. Wonderful video, thanks for sharing :)
