Yes. On purpose. The ones you mentioned are sold as collectibles. I proved that they could still serve a purpose, even as "wall hangers". This is sold as a survival knife that's made for hard use. I proved it's just a wall hanger.

I hate welded on tangs personally. I might have to re heat threat though

Rats started untreated. The left the end of it out of the handle and mushroomed it to hold on the grip. Full tang didn't have screws yet and adhesives weren't that great yet.

@@DonnieBAllDay UC is from Taiwan and 30+ years ago. UC has good fairly hard 420 (at least it did in the 80s) but the tube handles were soft or brittle castings that were unuseable(rattled or broke). Now R1-4s are made by Hollywood Collectibles which is Master Cutlery (and made in China not Taiwan). Softer steel but good tubes. (And excellent leather!) I owned a real $2k Lile and found the MC 420J steel copies a bit soft, but more sharpenable, and less brittle than the real thing.(Stouter point too!) To me sharpness is fundamental, and Lile's D-2 steel was just impractically hard when you actually use the knife. For the teeth to work, the tops have to be angled nose down for each one. It can be done by hand on an xtra coarse diamond hone. 420 steel gets a bad rap but is often just like Carbon that never rusts, especially the old UC Taiwan 420J steel... MC China 420J is softer but passable. I agree the handle on the video subject knife is badly done, but if you had simply bought some Gflex and slathered the inner parts with that, it would never loosen again. The handle design did look bad, squarish and fat, but at least the material is there to re-shape... The point did not bend much given how thin it was. With a lot of work it could be made into something...

@@fixedbladejunkie9532 I can send a pic of one of the vintage Winchester knives I have that Tim scott and crew made in the early 90s the only place I have found the usa made winchesters is on cutlery corner network, its owner was the late Jim Frost his son and family are still running it they have a show on dish and direct TV and the web site cutlery corner network I think that is about the only outlet for them and they are making new ones that are dated 2021 some of them he is using D2 steel on the older knives are carbon steel except some of the dr's knives that were stainless and the abalone scales.

The Roman rats didn't have welded in bolts. The were single hunk of wedged steel the went completely through the pommel and hammered to a mushroom end to hold on the grip. Big difference

It's "survival" knife. I do the same tests on other knives that never have an issue. This is a horrible "survival" knife.

@@DonnieBAllDay Donnie I have 4 of the Hibben rat tailed knives the only fault I can fined is the fact that they refuse for some unknown reason to epoxy the handled . I made my complaint years ago and I'm sure others have done the same. I did redo all of my rat tailed knives with epoxy and have had zero problems with them. We must remember in this 90 dollar price range the workman ship is out standing . Hell if you want to leave your life in the hands of a 90 dollar knife so be it my self not so much . As to the bent tip when it comes time you have a choice bend or break your choice . Over my 78 years I have put knives through hell but only when necessary I have never tested a knife in my life nor will I ever . I have had great times with my knives they have all done what they were designed to do and never a failure other than stag handled knives which were not pinned. Out of all 215 of them which is down now from well over 375 at one time years ago . Not once did I have a steel failure and all of my knives have been in the mid to low range price level under a hundred bucks. Testing has taken on an almost comical life of it's own on you tube but that's okay a little knowledge never hurt any one and makes for good viewing . I your into that Happy trails life is good if you don't complicate it .

As far as not trusting a knife with my life that only cost $90, I would 100% trust my life to a $15 Szco High Carbon Bowie all day, any day. If you have not had any problems with any Hibben ratties, I'm actually happy. I was hoping to not have any problems. I just have to wonder what kind of use you's have gone through. They sell this thing as an ultimate survival knife. Facts outweigh well wishes and it simply is far from a survival knife.

Using other knives the exact same way and having zero damage tells how exactly poorly made this knife is. And no, it's not an ax. But its listed as a "survivor" knife. That means, processing wood. That's EXACTLY what a survival knife needs to be able to do.
