STAITHES | Full tour of Staithes between Whitby and Redcar in North Yorkshire.
We visit the beautiful seaside fishing village of Staithes for a walking tour to the beach and harbour to see why people love to visit this popular holiday destination for a holiday or day trip.
Staithes, a charming fishing village nestled on the North Yorkshire coast, offers a glimpse into England's rich maritime history. Once a bustling hub, it was among the busiest fishing ports on the North East coast. Today, this quaint village within the North York Moors National Park has transformed into a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its charm.
Here are the top 10 tourist attractions in Staithes to help you plan your visit:
1. Explore the village: Wander the labyrinth of Staithes' narrow streets lined with traditional red-roofed cottages. The salty tang in the air and the cries of gulls overhead enhance the maritime atmosphere. Descend the steep paths to reach the compact harbor, where colorful fishing boats bob on the waves.
2. Staithes Beach: This small but beautiful beach is ideal for families and surfers. Explore the rock pools at low tide, a treasure trove for curious nature lovers.
3. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum: Learn about the fascinating life of Captain James Cook, who spent his formative years in Staithes, and his impact on exploration and navigation.
4. Staithes Art Gallery: Immerse yourself in the artistic heritage of Staithes. The gallery showcases works by renowned painters like Dame Laura Knight and George Weatherill, inspired by the dramatic cliffs and seascapes. Keep an eye out for local artists showcasing their talents in studios and shops throughout the village.
5. Staithes Festival: If you're visiting in September, don't miss the annual Staithes Festival, a vibrant celebration of arts, crafts, music, and local produce.
6. North Yorkshire Moors National Park: Explore the breath-taking scenery of the North York Moors National Park surrounding Staithes. Hike along the Cleveland Way National Trail, offering stunning coastal views, or visit nearby beauty spots like Roseberry Topping.
7. Boat Trips: Take a boat trip from Staithes harbor for a unique perspective of the coastline, spot marine wildlife like dolphins and seals, or explore hidden coves inaccessible by land.
8. Fresh Seafood: Savor the freshest seafood catches at Staithes' harbor-side pubs and restaurants. Enjoy a delicious meal with a view, the perfect way to end a day of exploration. Definitely try the Cod and Lobster restaurant in Staithes when you come for your visit.
9. Cultural Events: Staithes hosts various cultural events throughout the year, from art exhibitions and workshops to music concerts and theater productions. Check local listings for events happening during your visit.
10. Relaxation: Breathe in the fresh sea air and soak in the timeless beauty of Staithes. Relax on the beach, wander the charming streets, or simply find a cozy pub and enjoy a refreshing drink in the Royal George Hotel.
Staithes offers something for everyone, whether you're a history buff, an art enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a relaxing escape. This captivating village promises a memorable experience, where history and beauty intertwine.
Daniel Day Lewis filmed scenes from the movie Phantom Thread in Staithes.
If you have small children, you will certainly recognise the beautiful village of Staithes as the location for CBBC's series Old Jack's Boat starring Bernard Cribbins
Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer also came to Staithes to film their christmas special episode of their hit show 'Gone Fishing'
Around the village I can recommend the Staithes Gallery to explore some beautiful artwork, Cobbles Coffee Shop where you can get lovely ice cream, and The Kessen Bowl convenience store and gift shop which is run by the friendliest lady you will ever come across.
There are many holiday homes, holiday lets and guesthouses in Staithes. For our stay in Staithes we stopped at The Endeavour bed and breakfast which I can highly recommend. Their website is endeavour-staithes.co.uk/
Also visit Dotty's Vintage Tearoom on the High Street for afternoon tea!

It's easy to see why they built a village right here. It is well protected from all sides from the elements: wind, high sea etc. A nice protected harbour, and the narrow streets, small shops and places to eat (important to me ) just ads to the charm of Staithes. It too would be on my "visit frequently list" It's just perfect for a cave-dwelling troglodyte like me. If you can't catch the noisy seagull, then their eggs should be quite tasty.

I still love Staithes. My friend and I holidayed in the mid 60s, when we were teenagers. We have some fond memories of our time here. I've painted it in watercolour a couple of times too.

Staithes looks gorgeous but I did know that it has somewhat been taken over by second homers who seldom go there. Great to see it out of season. I bet it's packed in summer 🌞. Hi 🙋 Rebecca 🙂. Wonderful video Neil 👍

It was once a smugglers haven, contraband was brought in from the Netherlands and distributed in Whitby and its environs. Unfortunately as you say, it has been taken over by second homes, holiday cottages and ABBs, one just has to listen to the accents at a weekend, nearly all “hoorah Henry’s “ and “oh reallys”. Not to bad on weekdays you can still get a delicious fresh crab sandwich and a pint of hand pulled Yorkshire bitter at the Cod and Lobster. Enjoy your travels.

Staithes is beautiful. A few comments on the video: 1. The blue coloured stones down the sides of the road are engineering bricks. 2. How do they get cars down to the harbour? From experience, we know that Volvos are not the smallest cars to drive and can be difficult to get down narrow streets 😂 3. I've just watched the trailer for Phantom Thread. Not for me, thanks. Too arty and serious 😂 4. Thank you for showing the Lifeboat station ❤

I couldn’t find the current population. I wonder how the economy sustains itself there. How do most people make a living? You said lots of vacation homes so I wondered about how the population fluctuates in the off season. It looks like a beautiful peaceful place.

How much were the beer battered fish and chips? Re the road sets or bricks, i think they were made from the waste from the process of iron smelting but don’t quote me on that. They used them as ships ballast as well apparently. We knocked an old farm stable down near Great Ayton about fifty years ago and there were hundreds of these blocks or “sets”. They were as hard as bell metal. Used instead of concrete. Darlington back streets have a few as well up near the old mart. Just want to add these sets were heavy, heavy as lead nearly.
