I'm so tired of hearing people say that Larry Bird was not athletic. Let me explain something in a way that everyone can understand. THE NBA IS EXCLUSIVELY MADE UP OF ATHLETES!!! THERE HAS NEVER BEEN AN UNATHLETIC PLAYER IN THE NBA!!! NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN AN OBESE PERSON RUNNING UP AND DOWN AN NBA COURT!!! It doesn't matter that Larry Bird did not have a 4 foot vertical. Larry Bird was 6'9" so he didn't need to have a 4 foot vertical. It doesn't matter if Larry Bird was not the fastest player on the court. Larry Bird could run all day and all night. It doesn't matter if Larry Bird was not a ripped specimen with muscles bulging all over. Larry Bird was smarter than anyone else on the court. He knew how to box out. He knew how to post up. He understood blind spots and could steal the ball from the most capable of ball handlers. He cut into passing lanes to deny the easy feed inside. He always knew where everyone was on the court and would amaze crowds with his unbelievable passes. He was such a great penetrator because of his understanding of angles and how to use his body to protect the ball that it enabled him to break ankles when he suddenly would pull up for uncontested fade aways because the opponent was trying to hide his embarrassment while he struggled to get up off the floor. Larry Bird is absolutely the most clutch player the NBA has ever seen. However, Larry Bird's greatest attribute was his team play. He involved his team mates. Intentionally. Not as a last resort when he was double teamed or triple teamed, but with an understanding that if everyone had a great night then Boston was sure to win. Larry Bird was a winner. He was so much of a winner that Michael Jordon could never beat him in the playoffs, and he had six chances to do so. Just to state it plainly. LARRY BIRD WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST ATHLETES TO EVER PLAY IN ANY SPORT. VERY FEW ATHLETES HAVE EVER AND WILL EVER RISE TO HIS LEVEL OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS. That is not an accident. It was simply an athlete in pursuit of being the best basketball player...ever.

"He isn't very athletic..." As the video shows him breaking ankles and dunking. Honestly, I feel like they're going into the "white guy" basketball trope, which is racist to both sides: "he's smarter than the black guys, but can't move as fast as them." That's bullshit. He isn't some kind of intellectual, he's an athlete who plays extremely hard. He isn't "smarter" about basketball than those premiere black players either. They're playing every bit as "smart" as he is, he's just outplaying them in these clips. We can see it right there. Making that jump shot in the face of solid defense when you already told them you're going to shoot from there isn't "smart," it's being very good at making that shot. Playing a whole game with your off-hand isn't "smart," it's showing off how athletic you are. Is it smart to get in the opposing players' heads to throw them off their game? Sure. But trash-talking, dominating and getting into the other player's head isn't some kind of brilliant intellectual chess move he invented, it's what a lot of players have always done, whether they're black or white. He just did that very very well. But none of it would have worked if he didn't have the athleticism to walk his talk. Now, you'd have an argument if you said that his standout quality was his scrappiness, competitiveness and hard-work attitude. That he's no more smart or athletic than the other top-level star players of his time, it's just that he played *harder*. Left it all on the floor, even in regular season games. Dove for the ball, played hurt, etc. And you'd probably have a strong case there. But that isn't "smart" either, when you think about it.

Concussions Broken fingers Fractured cheekbone these are just a few things Larry would play through during games. However for the last 7 years of his career he played through pain emitting from his spine as he lost stability in it due to being a humble guy building a driveway for his mom and shovelling gravel ‘during the prime of his career’ Now adays any player gets a glimpse of being hurt they come out the game as they can’t risk losing their sponsors/ franchise as it’s all about the money these days

I had the good fortune of getting to see Larry's career as it happened. Too many people get caught up in style over substance. Remember, style counts for exactly zero points on the scoreboard. Larry wasn't athletic by NBA standards at all, but he had a career stat line of 24-10-6 and if he wanted could’ve easily had 4 more assists per game to have a triple-double career average. Imagine that. He also won 3 straight MVP awards (1984 - 86) at a time in the league's history when there were the Showtime Lakers with Magic, Kareem and Worthy, the 76ers with Dr. J, Moses and Barkley, the Bad Boys in Detroit with Isaiah and Laimbeer, and a great, young player named in Chicago named Michael with Scottie Pippen arriving soon. Larry is also the founding member of the 50-40-90 club and he won the first 3 three point contests (1986-88) which were the only ones he competed in. In addition to all of that he is unquestionably one of the most clutch shooters in NBA history. Yes, Larry was THAT good and he made everyone who played with him better. Charles Barkley once said, "Larry Bird can’t run or jump because that was God’s way of keeping things fair." Maybe he was right because a player with Larry's basketball IQ and mastery of fundamentals in an athletic body of someone like Dominique Wilkins would just be crazy.

You have to remember he injured his back in 85. His spine started deteriorating and his back was broken for years. They said he had two jobs, playing basketball and taking care of his back. The last few years he spent off days in a body brace or traction. Then it would take hours to set it and hope it would hold through the game. He had to lay on the floor of the plane to fly to away games. He played game 7 in playoffs completely different because his Achilles Tendons hurt so bad he couldn't do his step back. They said he refused shots and pills. Had the work ethic he got from his father. If you're getting paid to work then you work. Check out a documentary. Larry also worked on the tractor during the summer.

The guys reacting on the bench werent laughing at their teammates. They were cheering larry bird who had just achieved a 60 point game. In the 80s. In the defense era.

Magic and Bird started the same year. Bird though was drafted first in 1978 but decided to finish his senior year in college so didn’t get to start in the NBA until 1980.

You two need to watch more eighties basketball. The game was way more entertaining back then in my opinion. The passing of the Celtics and the Lakers is amazing. Fouls were way harder. You really can't get in a conversation about GOAT until you do.

Larry and KD are not even the same species. KD is an athlete, Larry is a monster. Check out the video called "5 times Larry Bird was injured but refused to quit" There is no player in todays league that would last a minute vs prime Larry or Prime Jordan, Magic, Kareem etc. It was a different league, those players were literally warriors. KD vs Larry would be like comparing someone doing exhibition fighting vs a three tour Navy Seal, no matter how perfected the first guys technique is he would stand a chance against a hardened killer with with a ton of combat experience. Jordan has Larry in his top 5 and is on the record saying there is no greater SF who ever played the game. Magic stated that Larry was the only player he ever feared. James Worthy said hed rather guard Jordan than Bird. The list comments like these from Hall of Fame players goes on for ever. KD may be as skilled as Bird, its hard to tell with the different rules and styles between now and back then... But he doesnt have the mental ferocity of Brid, the psychological edge, the drive. No one does, not even back in the 80s. I think it was Dominique Wilkins who said "When you look into his eyes, you dont see a baller, you see a killer". Larry would have KD shaking in his sneakers.

Y’all remember that Larry and Magic were rivals in college before the NBA. Larry is 3 years older than Magic so in college, Larry considered Magic a young buck. They faced off in 1979 in the NCAA championship game. Larry at that time known as “The hick from French lick” was playing for Indiana State and a young Earvin Johnson was playing for Michigan State. Earvin put up 24 points on Larry. Michigan won and Larry said it was “impossible” to get over it. They have been lifelong friends since. Magic even said at Larry’s retirement that he was the best player ever. Now, in regards to the GOAT conversion, that will probably go on forever but I can say this being a big fan of both Micheal Jordan and Larry Bird. Pat Riley said “If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird.” No disrespect to anyone, player or not, these words are pretty damn heavy. This is a man that knows the game of basketball better than 99% of the population as well as some of the best players in history and he’d put the ball in Birds hands to save his life.

In Indiana we usually have basketballs in our hands when we learn to run. Back then when Bird and JM played they were for the team now days it's for themselves. That's why today teams can't pass like those teams back then could.

As a native born Hoosier I take such joy in the life and career of Larry Bird. Larry really does embody the true nature of most Hoosiers. We love to compete. We don’t care about color. We just care about who wants to contribute. I do enjoy younger people giving the Old Hick from French Lick a look in this world today. Prayers to you.
