@Jehan Shandi M. Pacturanan - De Leon that's not how growing up and maturing works. Depending on those around you determines how your ideology and personality form. Maya was being Maya the whole time, but with people like Riley, the Mathews, and Shawn, she was learning more about herself and becoming a lot more mature, which in high school is something we all start to do. Saying she's acting like Riley is the biggest copout the show took because it ignored the most important aspect of becoming an adult. If the way she's acting makes her Riley, then the way you acting isn't being you, it's you being your friends because low and behold, your friends have a lot of influence over how you act, how you think, and what you believe in.

It really breaks my heart during that scene.......and what broke my heart even more was that she tried to leave the identity problem to Riley's parents. I am so glad Riley's mom told her to bring her butt back here and take responsibility.

It's 'cause she wasn't getting good grades because she had improved She was doing it because that's what Riley did. She was changing herself to be as much like Riley as she could be, losing herself in the process. Basically the context in which she was getting good grades matters, not just the fact that she was getting 'em.

Aanchal Saxena Exactly! They wanted her to get good grades and grow and learn, but as herself. Not Riley. Maya said herself she valued Riley more than herself. She thought the world needed Riley more than it needed her. The lesson was actually that the world needs Maya (real Maya not Riley Maya) just as much as it needs Riley. Which is actually a great lesson for her. Even Katy, who felt too under qualified to raise her own daughter, could tell something had to be really wrong for Maya to be struggling in art- because she was no longer expressing herself.

The problem wasn’t that Maya was getting good grades or behaving. It’s not that Maya can’t be good. It’s that Maya wasn’t being her. And you can see a clear difference once she drops Riley’s personality but keeps those lessons.

Maya is both a wild child and a good child, she started to stifle part of herself which is never good. She, luckily (even if it is just a show), has an amazing support system who loves the wild child and "good" girl that make her who she is... she's not her if she's not accepting both. This show shouldn't have been canceled.

Maya looks so emotionally drained in here it makes me so sad. Watching her character in this episode is so sad!! But it was all because of the lesson that it brings, which in my opinion is that Maya desperately needed to value her self more, because she only valued Riley’s self and life in general. It’s also sad how the reason that Maya started to be like Riley was because she really longed for her perfect life, ever since she was little. I honestly love this episode so much, even thought Riley may seemed annoying (but that was because she was desperate to bring her friend back, or even blaming herself for unconsciously changing her), because just by looking at Maya, you can perfectly see so much sadness in her and even thought it’s hard to see, it’s important to see because many teenagers feel like her.

I don't know if you remember the episode where farkle was modelling. Maya drew farkle in a bird's nest to show that farkle needs to be protected. She drew Riley as a person who's happy and gives out love by expressing her feelings... They're not telling her to stop getting good grades and behave , they're telling her to do that but as her own unique self...as a person who is rebellious who does what she wants. But at the end of they day when she was her old self, she learned a great lesson. That's why I loved Maya. SHE DID WHAT SHE WANTED. But know, she can't even stand up for herself that's not maturing. That's more like I need to be perfect. She needs to be herself and in this episode she looked so tired and depressed

Its like the creators forgot that as we get older, we mature and adapt based on our surroundings and those around us. Maya was not "acting like Riley", she was just growing up, and with her friends, Cory and Topanga, as well as Shawn, she had good influences and those helped her grow into a mature individual that, up until the episode they changed her back, was the strongest character in the show.

I think you guys need to understand is that even though it was good that she was getting good grades and not getting into trouble, that's not the pure true Maya. It was good that she was maturing but it was more important to stay the exact same. People change people, but they mustn't let themselves change too much or else there's too much of that in the world. Also whenever Maya did get in trouble they were minor things, and she always got punished with detention or getting grounded and she never minded. That's Maya not what we were seeing in the episodes during that time.

I don’t think you guys get what’s the issue. The problem is that maya stopped being herself. She lost her identity. She was being Riley. Maya and Riley are very different their styles are different. Maya is more edgy and Riley wears floral dresses. They aren’t saying that it’s wrong for her to make good grade and all that but she should be herself. Not acting like Riley. Her art reflected that. When she painted a purple cat that was her not being herself. I understand that the writers should have used better words. But u have to understand instead of hating on Riley. She wasn’t saying that she hates how maya is what’s she saying is that she isn’t see Maya anymore she’s seeing herself.

If the show had not said that Maya was trying to be Riley, would anyone even think that was the case?(in the fanbase) Yes Maya is a little downtrodden right now, but who wouldnt be after always being berated for being yourself? and then when you are maturing and changing and trying to find your feet as the "better" person everyone wanted you to be, suddenly you need to be fixed cause you arent acting like the you everyone boxed up in their mind. What's worse is the whole "you are turning into Riley so none of the thjngs youre thinkjng or feeling are real because they arent YOU, they are what your best friend thinks," that is mental abuse. that is gaslighting. that is trying to keep someone in a box just because you expect them to be a certain way.

“Fix her” Now that was supposed to be funny, but you know why it’s not? Riley says she wants someone to ‘fix’ maya. Riley clearly didn’t like the maya right there because she was different? That’s a problem. Just because someone is different doesn’t mean they need to be ‘fixed’. I’m putting these things ‘ ‘ between ‘fix’ because I don’t think we need to fix a person

Since Maya was always the rebellious one she balanced Riley out. Riley always thought she balanced maya out but she changed maya completely and Riley never wanted to change her. She just wanted to help her best friend. She wanted to be back to the way it was behind where they healthily balanced each other out. Also Riley is scared of change just like Cory and maya changed so much that Riley couldn’t see her best friend anymore. She just wanted to bring the real maya back. That’s why she thought she needed to be fixed and we learned that this wasn’t the real maya
