As with all hobby investments, just buy a cheaper version first and when you actually use it a lot or it has worn out then buy a good version, knowing what you want/need

but defo not too cheap as that's worse than nothing. I'll happily ride 80k in my mtb shorts than a crap chamois that keeps sliding down my waist...

I have to at least sort of disagree. Going cheap can often result in so much discomfort that the wearer doesn't want to get on the bike ever again. Not good. It's like this with any hobby. Don't be so spendy that you can't pay your life bills, but don't go so cheap that the results are awful. There is usually a happy middle ground.

MTBers wear the baggy shorts for more than just a fashion statement. Taking a fall on trail in lycra could destroy a very expensive pair of bib shorts, the baggy MTB shorts over them protects the bib shorts and by extension your skin.

A lot of good affordable mtb shorts now come included with really well padded cycling bibs that clips on to the short or can just be worn on their own. Am new to the channel and was just watching GCN's story about Selle Italia Flite story ( bought a new bike, thinking of getting a better saddle ) noticed it's also Manon in the vid. Bib shorts all the way! Been wearing them for over 30 years. Definitely recommend the over the shoulder style, though they can be inconvenient for comfort breaks, they are way more comfortable on longer rides. Also, if your jersey rides up a little, you won't get a ridiculous tan line at your waist.

Dear Manon, Here it is a couple of months after you posted this video and I am here to thank you. I am 69 years young in Oregon USA and thought that all these padded things were for road bikes. Well, I found out that more people than I knew road them mountain biking. And I was so glad to have them on our sea level to 3,200 ft/975 meters (McCullock Peak) 6 hour trip up and down our local Coast Mountain Range. I bought a set of Castrelli, as well as a couple of Zoic underwear that I need to wear shorts or bibs over. Thank you Manon for your very helpful recommendation! P.S. My Sweet Wife/Best Friend and I refer to them as "diapers". LOL :) P. P.S. By the way Manon, where are you? Haven't seen you lately on this channel.

This video is extremely timely. I just bought my first road bike a couple of days ago (I've been riding random bikes casually for about 2 decades though) and all this time, I've only been riding with casual shorts and jeans. I didn't even know there was a solution to chaffing and sore bums - always blamed it on the saddle and brute-forced through them. I had heard of cycling shorts but they looked too embarrassing and uncomfortable for me to try them. Just an hour ago, I decided to try and bought a pair of Specialized RBX shorts. I rode 20mi in khakhi shorts to the LBS to buy them and as I type this very comment, I'm wincing in pain with chaffed bits. Fingers crossed for future rides and thanks for the video!

I really nailed my saddle position without bib shorts that left little to none pain or discomfort during my own "at least 10 km every day in may" challenge (including some quite long rides and one Gran Fondo). In June I got myself a pair, and with bib shorts I started to feel discomfort after 30 minutes. I know that I probably need a new setup and all but still, for my riding it held up fine without them. It almost feels like a little bit of wasted money to be fair. (BUT I will continue to experiment with them, at least for a while).

I'll happily ride my bike with or without bib shorts although what I wear is often dependant on the distances I'm going to cover. While if I raced I'd wear bib shorts more often. 1:41 "I don't know many people who've sat on a saddle without bib shorts and thought. 'Oh yeah, that's comfy'" It depends how you define comfort. A saddle is never going to be as comfortable as a sofa, for example. Although it should feel supportive, while you shouldn't underestimate the importance of the other contact points (hands, feet) when it comes to 'comfort' as they all effect each other. In summary, if you have a terrible fit expensive bib shorts might help to a degree although it's possible what's covering your undercarriage wasn't the underlining issue.

yes, they are worth it, especially the padding, the question of tight fit is a matter of opinion. But I like the tight fit as it removes sweat really fast. Also bibs with straps are key, i had a pait with out straps and at the beginning it was fine but it started to stretch and fall as Manon says, then they become a distraction while riding. The cost, that is another question, mine were not expensive but fine for causal 50 to 70 km rides 2 to 3 times a week, longer and mor frequent rides they might become a problem. nice video.

I started off with a 1200$ Bike... Thennn 300$ Garmin 160$ Look Cleats 170$ SPD Cleats ... Cause why not have both? 70$ MTB helmet 120$ Road helmet because the MTB one cracked on a crash 120$ on front wheel because of said crash 350$ on Bib shorts and jerseys 100$ on misc maintenance stuff 150$ so far on food 2700$? And that's on a "cheaper" side. Not accounting for the fact I bought a TT bike as my first bike (used) and slot it for a 200$ lost.

Hello GCN hi Manon nice job I like the topic... Did you knew some riders are in fact not on board with the use of a pad in their bibs... I know some and hear about their comments and for sure I meet and actually discuss this she said to me 'Just cut the padding and use the Lycra as it comes', and she is a world famous woman cyclist who holds huge records for ultradistance. Dig into it and get amazed on how many cyclist are going on riding without any padding.

Congratulations you have a golden bum! Riding long over cobbles and the sort would be the ultimate test for your golden buns. If cobbles or long rides do hurt at some point and you do go for bibs, don't go for the thick padding as you'll probably have more issues with that than a thinner one. A thicker shammy doesn't equal a more comfortable one.

Woollen shorts onto a leather saddle... Sounds GREAT because good quality leather saddles (eg. Brooks) are still the most comfortable thing you can sit on while riding a bike. Foam glued on top of plastic is inherently flawed. Sure, it might be lighter, (sometimes) cheaper, and weather proof, it's never going to offer the long term comfort some cyclists need.

fundamental question- smb can explain me why they have much padding in bib shorts and other type of bycicle underwear, and why they not do seats with same comfortable padding?
@rafaelmondini
@rafaelmondini 4 жыл бұрын
1- a very paddled saddle isn't more comfortable than a chamois because your underside moves around it, so it doesn't ever mold to your sit bones form; 2- it doesn't eliminate chafing in your underside.
@arnoldhau1
@arnoldhau1 4 жыл бұрын
The padding in the shorts is allways exactly in the right place, while on the saddle that depends on your seating position. Also, on the saddle you would need much more of padding on the saddle. Also, it helps to have tight fit shorts to avoid any kind of chafing. All in all that concept (padding in the shorts, not on the saddle) does work very well. But I guess you can also use a padded saddle instead. It will propably hard to find one fit for a road bike (where you usually sit in a rather bent position), though. And you would still have to think about what to wear as many layers or loose fitting shorts may cause chafing. I am sure it is possible, it would just be a little bit harder to get right I guess.

Tark McCoy I three bikes right now. All three still have their stock saddles. Only one of them has a seat so hard and uncomfortable that it causes a bit of pain. It's a old road bike, which makes me wonder if manufacturers deliberately make the saddles uncomfortable because they know riders will just buy padded shorts.

That Ideal saddle looks beautiful and is the most comfortable saddle you will ever use. Bib shorts are B.S. If modern seats were more flexible, like the old Ideal saddle, you wouldn't need so much padding in the shorts! A thin chamois would be enough. Moreover, how do you take a leak with bib shorts? Regular cycling shorts work fine.

Yep, pricier bib shorts do fit better and move around a lot less. I once bought a nicer pair of bib shorts and then went back to an old favorite that wasn't so fitted, and finally noticed the difference. Old Favorite was relegated to the back of the cycling clothes drawer after that! I have a mid-range saddle (Astute women's saddle) but I can see why an expensive (and reliable) saddle is coveted. Hank can attest to the need for a reliable saddle, I believe.

I wear a leather or wool chamois but I’ve discovered a significant savings just wearing my shorts and suspenders. No butt crack and I can afford more shorts to keep laundry day further away. Plus it makes using the loo so so much easier. If you only ride once or twice a week the bibs may be for you.
